The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 147: The Flying Immortal

"The Matchmaking God, welcome."

Sun Wukong greeted the Matchmaking God at the Wanling Hall.

The Matchmaking God bowed with a chuckle, "I'm not here to seek refuge with the Great Saint, would you still welcome me?"

"Of course."

Sun Wukong nodded, he was well aware that the Matchmaking God would not abandon the other three continents.

The Matchmaking God was here simply to seek permission to arrange the matrimonial threads of the Western Continent.

"The Great Saint truly has a magnanimous heart."

The Matchmaking God bowed again.

He had gone to the Northern Continent before and the Buddha seemed to have other plans for matrimonial affairs. Even though the Buddha agreed, he was far from being as forthright as Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong personally welcomed each Immortal that came to Wanling Hall, showing his high regard for talent.

The Matchmaking God had a chat with him and then rose to take his leave.

As soon as he left Wanling Hall, he was stopped by Ao Luan who had been waiting on the side.

"The Matchmaking God."

Ao Luan gave him a bow, "I have a question for you."

The Matchmaking God glanced at her, the corners of his mouth curving up into a smile: "My powers have no effect on the Great Saint."

He knew at a glance what Ao Luan wanted to inquire about.

Ao Luan had anticipated this response and didn't take it too much to heart.

"I've heard the Matchmaking God can see the red threads entwined around a person."

Ao Luan asked, "Is there anyone whose red thread is entangled with my brother?"

The Matchmaking God shook his head.

"Really?"

Ao Luan was somewhat skeptical, "How about someone named Daji?"

The Matchmaking God shook his head, "I haven't seen it."

"Is that so?"

Ao Luan brightened up: "What about the Water Moon Fairy?"

"The Water Moon Fairy?"

The Matchmaking God frowned, "I really haven't seen that."

Ao Luan felt that something wasn't quite right.

But she was still very happy, after all, that kind of glutton, her brother definitely wouldn't like her.

"What about the one called Rakshasa?"

Ao Luan asked again.

"Fairy..."

The Matchmaking God was half amused, half annoyed: "Are you going to ask about each one in turn?"

Ao Luan hastened to apologize.

"Don't worry."

The Matchmaking God sighed, "The Great Saint's aspiration lies elsewhere."

He had just observed Sun Wukong; Sun Wukong had already become a Heavenly Venerate, and his determination had grown firmer than before, perhaps pursuing a greatness incomprehensible to others.

No matter who it would be, to move his heart now would likely not be a matter of a mere hundred years.

"Fairy."

The Matchmaking God gave a bow to Ao Luan, "I have urgent matters, so I must take my leave now."

"Go ahead."

Ao Luan did not stop him.

Though she obtained no results, at least she knew one thing – for now, she had no rivals in love.

This made her mood much brighter.

The Matchmaking God flew away from Wanling Hall and after a short distance, turned back to glance at Ao Luan, unable to help shaking his head.

So, this was the Fairy who fancied the rock.

A rare kind deeply smitten, with ten fingers all entangled in red threads stretching towards the same person.

If any Fairy could truly move Sun Wukong's heart, perhaps it could only be her.

"Truly a life full of trials and hardships..."

The Matchmaking God thought to himself as he gradually flew farther away.

And Ao Luan, on her visit to Wanling Hall, naturally went to pay her respects to Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong was somewhat surprised by her arrival, then he smiled.

"You've come at the right time, come with me."

Sun Wukong led her away from the Wanling Hall, flying eastward.

They flew over high mountains and plains, skirted past Daughter Country, and arrived at the Tongtian River.

"This is the boundary I've drawn."

Sun Wukong said.

Ao Luan hovered in the air, overlooking the Tongtian River, which was at least several hundred li wide and had no visible opposite bank, indistinguishable from the sea.

"How vast."

Ao Luan was very surprised that a river could be this vast.

No wonder Daughter Country could remain isolated from the world for so many years. Just this river alone had kept the ordinary people of the outside world at bay.

"The Tongtian River is eight hundred li wide."

Sun Wukong spoke, "Building a bridge over it, do you think it's feasible?"

"It is feasible."

Ao Luan furrowed her brows, "But it's too difficult, I don't think it's necessary."

"You're right."

Sun Wukong smiled, "That's why I plan to place a Water Mansion here to clear a waterway. You help me find some manpower to come over."

Ao Luan immediately understood.

"I'll go back to Huaguo Mountain right away to select manpower."

She paid her respects to Sun Wukong and then flew towards Huaguo Mountain.

"Letting her go alone doesn't seem quite right..."

Sun Wukong watched Ao Luan's retreating figure and thought.

Ao Luan handled various affairs for him. Although she was an Immortal, her strength was still somewhat lacking.

"I should ask Lord to help refine a few Immortal Artifacts..."

Ideas flickered through Sun Wukong's mind, but his body was already at the other end of the Tongtian River.

This end belonged to the Kingdom of Chechi. Of course, Sun Wukong was not here to sightsee.

He first found a stone stele with three big seal-character words "Tongtian River" on it, and ten smaller characters below, "Eight hundred li in width, seldom traversed through ages."

"This is the right place..."

Sun Wukong continued to search upward but after a few li, he still hadn't seen the Linggan Great King Temple.

Linggan Great King was a goldfish raised by The Bodhisattva Guanyin, occupying the Tongtian River and posing as a deity. Every year, humans nearby were forced to offer boys and girls as sacrifices to him.

Sun Wukong had planned to take care of this nuisance along the way, but Linggan Great King had not yet arrived.

That saved him some trouble.

Sun Wukong was about to leave when suddenly the waters of the Tongtian River parted, and a swarm of Water Clan demons emerged.

He stopped in his tracks and turned to look.

An old turtle emerged from the river.

"Unaware of the Great Saint's arrival, I've failed to greet you from afar."

The old turtle spoke.

"I know you." Sun Wukong recalled this old turtle: "Would you like to come under my command?"

"Naturally, I am willing."

The old turtle, along with the Water Clan from the Tongtian River, paid their respects to Sun Wukong.

"In a few days, some people will come here to establish a Water Mansion. You must obey their orders."

Sun Wukong said, "From now on, the Tongtian River will be the border of Wanling, and numerous mortals will pass through here to cross the river. As long as you cooperate diligently, I will teach you how to shed your shell and obtain a human form."

The old turtle was overjoyed at these words.

It had been cultivating in the Tongtian River for hundreds of years; Though it extended its life and became lighter, and could speak human language, it could never shed its shell.

The Great Saint was truly divinely skilled; with just one look, he knew it wanted a human form.

"I will strictly obey the Saint's orders."

The old turtle bowed its head to Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong smiled, then turned his head to look towards some distant villages.

He remembered the Heavenly Book recorded this place as Chen Family Village. Not many people lived here, but the population would soon increase.

"What is your status here?"

Sun Wukong asked the old turtle.

"I have no Immortal Records."

The old turtle replied, "Those humans worship me as the River God."

Sun Wukong nodded.

"In that case, you may tell those humans," Sun Wukong said, "when the Water Mansion is established, they will be able to travel to Wanling through the waterways."

This was not only for the people nearby but also for all the mortals in the Western Continent.

The Tongtian River would become an important thoroughfare for these mortals to reach Wanling.

After leaving these instructions, Sun Wukong ascended, transformed into a beam of golden light, and left.

Many people in Chen Family Village saw this scene and knelt to worship.

"Grandpa, it's a flying Immortal!"
