The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 201: Breaking at a Touch

Wanling Hall, Sun Wukong sat cross-legged in meditation.

Surrounded by a halo of golden light, sacred and majestic, his brows, however, gradually furrowed, as if he was at his wit's end.

Seeing this, the nearby attendant An Jing Si couldn't help but worry.

"Great Saint has always been confident and calm, never showing such an expression."

He glanced at Elder Jin Chan, who was sitting by the side drinking tea, and asked softly, "Elder, is the Immortal Path that the Great Saint is so intent on creating really that difficult?"

An Jing Si had deep admiration for Sun Wukong from the bottom of his heart, which was why he found it so strange.

How could the Great Saint, who even the Heavenly Palace could do nothing about, be troubled over a mere Immortal Path?

"This Immortal Path is no ordinary path; it's as difficult as reaching the heavens."

Elder Jin Chan set down his teacup and said, "He is going against the tide, aiming to create an Immortal Path that breaks away from the ancient system."

Strictly speaking, what Sun Wukong was trying to create wasn't an Immortal Path.

But rather a cultivation system unseen and beyond all imagination.

It was a grand revolution capable of overturning the Three Realms.

How difficult this was, perhaps no one could tell.

"Breaking through common sense, carving out a broad highway where there was no road before."

Elder Jin Chan watched Sun Wukong's arduous exploration and couldn't help shaking his head.

Sun Wukong had chosen the most difficult path for himself.

He sat and drank tea for a while longer when suddenly, a beam of light shone from Sun Wukong and turned into a Jade Seal floating in mid-air.

"Has he succeeded?"

Elder Jin Chan put down his teacup, sensing a breakthrough from Sun Wukong, and hurriedly looked over at the Jade Seal.

Sun Wukong also opened his eyes and looked towards the Jade Seal.

Upon first glance, the Jade Seal seemed no different, still lustrously sleek, exuding an air of primitive majesty.

But upon closer inspection, one would notice a tiny bean sprout appearing within it.

That was a young sapling, its entire body sparkling and shining, with only one leaf just sprouted, looking just like a bean sprout.

"It seems there has not been much progress."

Elder Jin Chan watched for a while and felt somewhat disappointed in his heart.

The bean sprout was Sun Wukong's creation of Immortal Rules, but it was merely a sprout, and there was still a very long way to go before it took form.

Sun Wukong was also somewhat concerned.

"At this rate, when will I be successful?"

He said with furrowed brows.

Just to get the seed to sprout into a bean sprout had taken him several years, and there were still countless deeper realizations needed for it to grow and take shape; it was unknown when it would be successful.

"This humble monk's knowledge is insufficient, deeply regrettable."

Elder Jin Chan said to Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong would sometimes call him over to talk about Buddhist Divine Skills, but Elder Jin Chan had only studied the scriptures extensively, possessed high mana, yet never truly practiced many Divine Skills.

Sun Wukong was seeking knowledge related to Divine Skills, but he could not offer Sun Wukong much help.

"It doesn't matter; where there's a will, there's a way."

Sun Wukong stood up, his nature resolute, a momentary setback would not affect him.

"True Monarch has invited me to a restaurant for a tofu feast, Elder could come along with me."

He invited Elder Jin Chan.

A new restaurant that specialized in tofu feasts had recently opened in Wanling City, favored by Erlang's infantry, and Immortal Master Erlang also asked Sun Wukong to try it out.

Sun Wukong took Elder Jin Chan there, and upon seeing the restaurant, it was packed with people, candlelight shining brilliantly as if in an Immortal Realm.

"Great Saint, this way, please."

Immortal Master Erlang was waiting for Sun Wukong at the entrance and welcomed him into a private room of the restaurant.

As soon as they entered the private room, all the bustling noises from outside disappeared, replaced by a stream of melodious singing.

The song came from a book of musical notes hanging on the screen.

Hearing this song, Elder Jin Chan couldn't help but smile and say, "This is the new song Miss Daji sang last month at Miao Yin Square."

Immortal Master Erlang cast a look and asked, "Elder, how are you so familiar with this?"

"The musical scorebook is sold by us,"

Elder Jin Chan answered.

Immortal Master Erlang suddenly realized and said with a smile, "I thought you also visited Miao Yin Square."

He invited the two to sit down, then Sun Wukong asked, "You called me here, is it related to Miao Yin Square?"

Immortal Master Erlang nodded.

Lately, he had noticed that Immortals were frequently going to Miao Yin Square. Although it wasn't wrong in itself, it impacted their work.

Immortal Master Erlang inquired of Sun Wukong, as the person in charge of the Earth Palace, whether he should say a few words of advice to those Immortals.

"Then give them some advice."

Sun Wukong nodded.

Recently, the demons of Wanling Country were all talking about Miao Yin Square. Unexpectedly, even those Immortals were influenced.

This wouldn't do; in the long run, it might negatively affect the industries of Wanling Country.

"I'll have to do some guidance and set restrictions."

Sun Wukong thought to himself.

"What would you all like?"

At this moment, a human male opened the private room door and came in to ask.

The three ordered dishes, and Sun Wukong watched the man leave.

"Is this tavern run by humans?"

He inquired.

The tavern staff in Wanling City were mostly Rabbit Demons, with human sightings rare, let alone male humans, which struck him as odd.

"The owner of this place is not human, but the rest are,"

Immortal Master Erlang replied, "These humans were originally working in the food production area as kitchen workers, fetching water and cooking every day. Seeing the Bull Demon King's thriving business, they followed the lead of the Head Chef and opened this tavern."

"That's not bad at all."

Sun Wukong nodded. The noise from outside the private room suddenly grew louder, and so he casually wrote a 'harmony' character in the air.

Once the 'harmony' character materialized, a warm sensation spread around, as if carrying the scent of flowers, quieting the noise from outside swiftly.

"The Great Saint's spells are becoming more and more incredible."

Immortal Master Erlang voiced his admiration.

"It's just a trivial skill."

Sun Wukong replied, "Perhaps before long, I can teach this Divine Skill to you all."

Elder Jin Chan was startled upon hearing this, "Great Saint has such Divine Skills, so why has the Immortal Dao just begun sprouting?"

"Such Divine Skills can only be used by Immortals."

Sun Wukong shook his head; what he wanted to create was a method for mortals to become Immortals.

If one day he could find a way to turn a mortal's writing into a spell, then the Immortal Dao would be nearly complete.

"Then the Wanling Immortal Path..."

Immortal Master Erlang was also drawn into the topic, "Great Saint, have you found a shortcut?"

"There are no shortcuts."

Sun Wukong replied.

He too wished to find shortcuts, but on a path untrodden, one can only search for the interconnectedness amidst the vast expanse of spells without any shortcuts.

"The Tao is lonely at its summit."

Immortal Master Erlang couldn't help but sigh, "Great Saint must walk it alone."

He was willing to help Sun Wukong, but he lacked the deep knowledge to do so; only Sun Wukong was capable of integrating such a myriad of spells within himself.

"This Immortal Path is crucial to us; if a few more years go by without success, I shall visit the Heavenly Palace."

Sun Wukong declared.

He felt a sense of crisis. If he could not create the Immortal Path, in five hundred years, Wanling Country would be nothing more than a bubble, easily burst.

No matter how much Wanling Country's technology progresses or how prosperous society becomes, if it can't be applied to the revolution of the Immortal Path, it will ultimately fall short of the Three Thousand Immortal Paths of the Heavenly Palace.
