The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 222: I Want to Seek Immortality

In Wanling City, Sun Wukong only invited everyone to gather together for two festivals.

One is the Mid-Autumn Festival, the other is the Spring Festival.

But the Mid-Autumn Festival is not celebrated every year, so Spring Festival is the busiest day in Wanling City each year.

After the annual year-end summary, Wanling Hall is decorated magnificently, and Immortals and Demons gather to celebrate the end of the year together.

Wanling City and Mountain and Sea City are also extraordinarily bustling, glittering with stars and filled with clamorous voices.

Under the night sky, Fairy Chang'e arrive on schedule, dancing gracefully in the heavens.

After more than a decade of tradition, this has become an unwritten custom.

A night of celebration, after the noise and liveliness, deep into the night, the Immortals depart one after another.

Sun Wukong stands at the entrance of Wanling Hall, bidding them farewell, watching the many streaks of Immortal Light crossing the sky, he sighs softly.

"What's wrong, elder brother?"

Ao Luan sensitively detected the fluctuations in his mood.

"My path is no longer just my own."

Sun Wukong replied.

He looked down upon Wanling City, even though it was late at night, but the splendid lights were bright enough to illuminate the night sky.

Since the beginning of his study until today, Sun Wukong has borne the expectations of many and is no longer progressing alone.

He is a leader, responsible for protecting those who stand with him.

"I depart tonight."

Sun Wukong suddenly said.

Ao Luan was taken aback but pursed her lips and said nothing.

Sun Wukong returned to his room to find that Ao Luan had followed.

"What are you following me for?"

Sun Wukong asked.

"To see you off."

Ao Luan replied.

"It's just a long sleep."

Sun Wukong laughed: "I'll still get up from time to time to take a look."

He wasn't truly leaving Wanling Hall, so he didn't mention it to many people.

"I want to see your Mana."

Ao Luan found another excuse.

"Mana?" Sun Wukong thought: "Alright, I'll show you."

He extended his hand and wrote a character for 'dream' in the air.

As soon as the character for 'dream' appeared, it shimmered in golden light, transforming into thousands of glowing butterflies fluttering around the room.

The room suddenly became a radiant, dream-like vista.

"Is this Zhuang Zhou's Dream of the Butterfly?"

Ao Luan looked at the butterflies: "What exactly are they?"

"Mirrors that turn dreams into reality."

Sun Wukong said: "My will, through them, will manifest thousands of miles away, becoming reality."

Ao Luan realized what he meant.

"Elder brother, are you going to create an avatar with a dream?"

"It is… and it isn't."

Sun Wukong shook his head, what he was about to create was not an avatar, but an illusion as fleeting as reflected flowers and moon in the water.

Although Ao Luan didn't understand, she did grasp one thing: "Can you enter the Scripture Pavilion directly?"

"Not yet."

Sun Wukong sighed, his Divine Skills were not yet powerful enough.

At such a distance, to turn dreams into reality was already quite astonishing.

"I can only transform into a mortal."

Sun Wukong said: "Without even a Spirit Root."

Ao Luan was startled: "Then how will you go to the Scripture Pavilion?"

"Heavenly Ladder."

Sun Wukong replied succinctly.

Emperor Donghua had already investigated for him; the Scripture Pavilion was not in the Heavenly Palace but located on the Eastern Continent, one of the Three Thousand Immortal Paths, which could be accessed through the Heavenly Ladder.

"Take good care of Wanling Country for me."

Sun Wukong went to the bedside and said: "Do not let anyone wake me up unless absolutely necessary."

"Yes."

Ao Luan saluted and watched Sun Wukong lie down on the bed.

Those thousands of butterflies flew into his body and disappeared.

After watching for a while and making sure Sun Wukong had fallen asleep, Ao Luan carefully closed the door and left the room.

Two months later, at a seaport in the Southern Continent.

A middle-aged man was thrown off a merchant ship by two dockworkers.

"Mute, what're you doing boarding the ship without any money?"

The two dockworkers cursed: "At your age, you've still got the nerve to hitch a ride!"

The middle-aged man fell to the ground, got up, and then knelt down, kowtowing several times to the dockworker while mouthing something silently.

He didn't understand why he wanted to go to the Eastern Divine Continent so badly, but his mind was fixated on it, relentlessly longing to go there no matter what.

"Here."

A voice sounded.

The middle-aged man looked up to see a young man in front of him holding out a purse.

The middle-aged man looked at him with confusion.

"Take it."

The young man stuffed the money into his hand and said, "Stop drifting around. Take this money and find a place to settle down and live a good life."

For some reason, the young man's voice was very charming. As he spoke, the middle-aged man's desire to go to the Eastern Divine Continent vanished.

"Wu Xiang, hurry up and get on the boat, we're about to set off!"

A dockworker on the ship called out.

"Coming."

The young man responded, smiled at the middle-aged man, and then quickly ran onto the boat.

"Why are you meddling in other people's business?"

Two dockworkers held the young man, resenting on his behalf, "It's obvious he's just a scoundrel!"

"You're just too kind."

While the dockworkers were scolding the young man, they weren't really angry.

Wu Xiang was a young man the captain had picked up on the seashore two months ago, apparently having suffered a shipwreck and forgotten everything about himself except that his name was Wu Xiang.

Feeling pity for him, the captain took him in as a dockworker. Initially, the other dockworkers disliked him, but he had a way with words and was lively and cheerful, quickly becoming one of the crew.

"You're crazy, just giving away hard-earned money."

After the merchant ship left the port, the other dockworkers also chided the young man, "If you keep wasting money like this, how will you ever find a wife in the future?"

"Find a wife?"

The young man said subconsciously, "What do I need a wife for?"

"Of course to start a family and settle down."

The dockworkers laughed, "You're not an immortal. If you don't get married, how will you support yourself in old age?"

"Who knows, maybe I will become an immortal in the future!"

The young man couldn't help scoffing.

What's so great about being an immortal? He was Sun Wukong!

"Eh?"

The young man suddenly froze.

Wait, what had he just thought?

He was Sun Wukong?

Sun Wukong?

The young man slapped his forehead.

"I slept in a daze."

After being confused for two months, Sun Wukong finally remembered his identity.

But he was asleep, and to realize he was dreaming within the dream wasn't simple.

However, previously being oblivious, how did he suddenly come to understand?

"Someone provoked me."

Sun Wukong had a thought and instantly understood why.

He walked to the deck and looked towards the gradually distant port.

The middle-aged man's figure was heading inland, and vaguely, there seemed to be a shadow of the Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King.

"So it was him."

Sun Wukong was somewhat surprised.

Unfortunately, he now had no mana at all, a true mortal without the ability to fly back to find that Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King.

"Wu Xiang, you're not working; what are you doing here?"

The captain approached Sun Wukong.

"Captain."

Sun Wukong turned his head and said to the captain, "When we arrive at the Eastern Divine Continent, I will leave."

The captain was startled: "What are you leaving to do?"

"Seeking Immortality."

Sun Wukong said, "I'm going to seek immortality."

In the sky, several figures flew past, and one of them, upon hearing the voice, couldn't help but look down.

"Your Majesty, what's wrong?"

The immortal following behind asked.

"Nothing."

Gouchen glanced at the young man on the ship, withdrew his gaze, and said, "Encountered a Seeker of Immortality."

The Heavenly Ladder of the Eastern Divine Continent truly attracted many, with even people from the Southern Continent wanting to cross over.

"Let's go."

Gouchen, the Heavenly Venerate, led his subordinates flying towards Chang'an.

With the situation in the Western Continent already settled beyond his help, he could only turn his attention to the Southern Continent.
