The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 248: No Room to Maneuver

The world was a void.

Everywhere he looked, there was misty fog.

The Jade Emperor broke into this place.

The heavens and the earth were vast, yet he was the only one.

There were no sun, moon, or stars here. As far as the eye could see, ancient and simple texts flickered and gathered, transforming into an expansive land and a vast starry sky.

Amidst the mist, Sun Wukong stood ahead, guarding a glowing object.

"Where is this?"

The Jade Emperor asked.

"Inside the great tree."

Sun Wukong answered.

When he saw the Jade Emperor rushing into the Wanling Hall, he cast a spell to pull him into the small world of the Wanling Immortal Path.

"So, this must be the heart of the Wanling Immortal Path?"

The Jade Emperor looked at the glowing object behind Sun Wukong.

Amidst the light, he vaguely saw the shape of the Jade Seal.

"Well, that saves the time of searching for it."

The Jade Emperor thought to himself, a plain Immortal Sword appearing in his hand.

"Imperial Brother, are you dissatisfied with the Heavenly Dao?"

He asked.

"No, but it is isolated and unapproachable."

Sun Wukong pulled out the Jingu Bang, "It cannot lead the Three Realms forward."

Sun Wukong believed only by transforming the Immortal Dao into productive power could civilization prosper, and people would no longer worry about food and clothing.

And only in such ways would mortals think about greater truths and he might find the answer.

*He believed material conditions determined the spirit,* a fundamental difference between him, the Jade Emperor, and Tathāgata.

The Jade Emperor squinted his eyes, "Aren't you worried that mortals becoming immortals would cause chaos in the Three Realms?"

"That's not a reason for stagnation."

Flames flickered in Sun Wukong's eyes.

"I've made my decision; even with various problems, I believe if Wanling unites, they can walk the correct path."

"I see, I think I understand."

The Jade Emperor realized Sun Wukong's determination, but his expression suddenly changed.

"However, I cannot agree! You want to explore the future, while I want to protect the present."

There was no more chance for reconciliation between them.

The Jade Emperor's sword was drawn.

What followed was a boundless killing intent.

The sword appeared unimpressive, yet it was the Heavenly Dao Sword, indestructible.

As the sword's edge touched the world transformed by the Wanling Immortal Path, the two were irreconcilable, and bluish-white nihil flames immediately enveloped the sword.

Sun Wukong grasped the Jingu Bang in his hands, realizing there was no turning back now.

"Go!"

The Jade Emperor seized the initiative. The Immortal Sword instantly transformed into countless streaks of clear white light, charging towards Sun Wukong with unstoppable momentum.

It seemed as though every star in the heavens fell like rain all at once, and all the raindrops aimed at just one person.

Sun Wukong's form flickered, and a myriad of clones expanded, meeting the attack with his staff.

Sword light and clones continuously collided and shattered, the resounding clanging of metal echoed through the entire small world.

"Wukong!"

From outside the small world came the voice of the Grandmaster, "Don't cause too much chaos, you'll destroy the Immortal Dao!"

Master Puti guarded the great tree outside and was aware something was wrong when the two started fighting.

Every sword light from the Jade Emperor was transformed by the Immortal Dao, with boundless power and an astonishing aura.

Sun Wukong suffered a backlash from the Heavenly Dao, and his clones couldn't withstand it at all.

Countless clones were severely wounded, falling to the ground, and countless firefly-like glowing texts were stirred up.

There were still many sword lights he couldn't intercept, crashing into Sun Wukong and making his form unsteady.

Amid the raging wind, the land and rivers made of text instantly erupted in war and smoke.

The Jade Emperor floated in the sky as a light and shadow, curiously observing this scene.

"How could this happen?"

Sun Wukong's counterattack seemed... a little weak.

Even with the backlash from the Heavenly Dao, he shouldn't have allowed the sword light to bombard him.

The Jade Emperor furrowed his brow slightly, divine light flickering in his eyes as he glanced at the ground, then his expression changed slightly.

"Backlash from the Heavenly Dao!"

He noticed the black mist among the texts.

This wasn't the small world of the Wanling Immortal Path at all, but rather the small world of the Heavenly Dao Curse!

"Imperial Brother,"

The Jade Emperor looked coldly at Sun Wukong, "Are you using my power to fight the Heavenly Dao backlash?"

"What else?"

Sun Wukong blocked the last sword light and smiled, "Otherwise, how would I have time to fight you?"

In the next moment, the Illusion Technique he had applied to the small world disappeared.

Heaven and earth, all the texts turned into pitch-black flames.

Since it had already been discovered, Sun Wukong no longer held back. He locked onto the Jade Emperor and swung the Jingu Bang towards him.

"Come on!"

The more intensely they fought, the faster the backlash from the Heavenly Dao dissipated!

The radiant glow surrounding Sun Wukong was like the brightest sun in the world. The Jade Emperor didn't know whether to fight or flee, and the omnipresent sword light gradually dimmed.

"No way, if I stay here, I'll fall into his trap!"

Thought the Jade Emperor as he dodged.

If breaking those black flames through their fight, the Wanling Immortal Path would only form sooner.

But if he wanted to find an exit, it was now somewhat late.

Sun Wukong gave the Jade Emperor no time to be distracted; the Jingu Bang in his hand suddenly enlarged, then swung with force, shredding countless sword beams and clearing a large patch of the sky.

The Jade Emperor faintly sensed something was wrong, but it was too late to dodge.

Sun Wukong broke through the Sword Array and immediately swung his staff straight at the Jade Emperor.

The gale roared, the might pressing down like Tai Mountain.

"Clang!" a crisp sound echoed as the Jade Emperor blocked the staff with his sword.

But he could barely parry it, unable to control his form, plummeting to the ground like a meteor, creating a massive crater.

The dust rose into the sky with the fierce wind, obscuring the sky and the day.

The Jade Emperor stood up from the bottom of the crater, swayed a bit, and couldn't help but cough, spitting out a mouthful of blood.

The treasure sword in his hand also hummed, its aura weakened.

The Jade Emperor's Immortal Body was powerful, his mana astounding, but against Sun Wukong, even the strongest Immortal Body would be futile.

No one could resist Sun Wukong's fierce attacks!

"I can't engage him in close combat."

Thought the Jade Emperor.

Although his injuries had recovered a lot, the Immortal Body had not yet accustomed to fighting. Only by confronting him with Immortal Law was there a chance to win against Sun Wukong.

The thought flashed by, and countless sword lights rose from around him, charging towards Sun Wukong in the sky.

The Jade Emperor dodged while seeking an exit, the struggle between sword lights and clones never ceasing for a moment.

The aftermath of the battle constantly shook this world, gradually cracking the earth and polluting the sky. Black mist continuously shattered into dust, and everything fell into chaos.

The fight slowly eroded and dissolved the backlash from the Heavenly Dao, and corresponding to the outside, some of the black mist entwining the great tree gradually disappeared.

"This disciple is indeed clever."

Below the tree, Master Puti nodded silently.

As long as Sun Wukong successfully held the Jade Emperor at bay, the tree could quickly overcome its calamity.

In the small world, Sun Wukong swung his staff at the Jade Emperor again, the wind pressure instantly swept away all the dust. By then, however, the place was already empty.

"Where did he go?"

He looked around, then saw the Jade Emperor high in the sky.

The Jade Emperor's face was livid.

How could he, as the Great Venerable, be willing to be pursued continuously!

"Since it has come to this..."

The Jade Emperor put away his treasure sword, and in front of him appeared another pale sword about three feet long.

Unable to find an exit, he could only tear a way open with force!
