The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 340: Cause and Effect Once

Huaguo Mountain, Ao Luan handed a stack of portraits to Immortal Zhen Yuan.

"Why are they portraits?"

Immortal Zhen Yuan took the portraits and flipped through a dozen or so, finding it rather strange.

Why are there so many mortals and demons in these portraits?

Are these the talents of two hundred years later?

As Immortal Zhen Yuan pondered, he finished looking through the portraits, pausing on the last few.

"What's the deal with these seven girls?"

He asked, "Why are they wearing the clothes of my Taoist Sect?"

"They are your disciples."

Ao Luan calmly responded, "They are seven Spider Demons."

Immortal Zhen Yuan suddenly wore an expression as if he had seen a ghost; he, the exalted Ancestor of Earth Immortals, had taken seven Spider Demons as disciples?

That's impossible!

"Wait a moment..."

Immortal Zhen Yuan suddenly seemed to recall something: "Are these seven youngsters fond of flying kites?"

"Yes."

Ao Luan nodded, looking at him with a puzzled expression: "How did you know?"

"A bit of an impression."

Immortal Zhen Yuan's eyes shifted, recalling a scene where he had seen several youngsters treating a Golden Cicada as a kite while facing Sun Wukong.

So they are all his disciples, no wonder they are so promising!

"Come over here!"

Immortal Zhen Yuan called his disciples and distributed the extra portraits to them.

"Go find these individuals and make sure to bring them back."

Immortal Zhen Yuan instructed.

"Yes."

The disciples took the portraits and left.

"I'll go find these little ones."

Immortal Zhen Yuan put the portraits of the Spider Demons into his sleeve, informed Ao Luan, and then turned to walk out of Monkey King Palace.

Just as he stepped out, a beam of light suddenly streaked across the sky at dawn, falling towards the ground.

"It has begun."

Immortal Zhen Yuan looked up.

That was the silhouette of Sun Wukong; he was headed for the Underworld.

"Why is he alone?"

Immortal Zhen Yuan immediately furrowed his brow.

"What's wrong with being alone?"

Ao Luan came out and asked.

"It's very dangerous."

Immortal Zhen Yuan replied.

The ghosts and gods of the Underworld are naturally not as powerful as those in the Heavenly Palace, but the Underworld is where the sins of the Three Realms are most concentrated, even the Heavenly Emperor could fall if contaminated too much.

"Why isn't Emperor Qinghua accompanying him?"

Immortal Zhen Yuan was quite worried.

Emperor Qinghua, unaffected by sins and able to use his path of righteousness to dissolve the curse of the Blood Sea, should have gone with Sun Wukong.

"If it's about sins, Immortal need not worry."

Ao Luan, seeing Immortal Zhen Yuan's concerns, said: "Brother himself has great Merit, sufficient to offset any contracted sins."

Immortal Zhen Yuan shook his head: "Merit can temporarily protect my wise brother, but it cannot offset sins."

He waved his hand and rode the clouds towards the Western Continent.

In the nether regions, beyond Yin Mountain, the whole land appeared like a heated iron block, where countless evil spirits connected end to end walked upon it.

Some prison guards stood behind the evil spirits, their iron whips and chains spitting flames, driving the spirits towards Yin Mountain.

Suddenly, a faint and splendid melody came from the sky.

The prison guards looked up, as Sun Wukong descended from the heavens, the entire Underworld trembling under his presence, turning the gloomy sky bright.

All the prison guards were petrified by this scene, hastily kneeling on the ground.

Seizing the opportunity, the evil spirits began to scatter.

Sun Wukong landed on the ground, hands behind his back looking towards Yin Mountain, his arrival so grand yet no one came out to welcome him.

Perhaps give them some more time.

He thought, then found a rock and sat down.

Around him, within a hundred meters radius, vegetation began to appear, blossoming a vast expanse of petals.

"Ah?"

This wasn't Sun Wukong's intention, he too was surprised.

"Flowers! They are flowers!"

Some evil spirits that had just run away saw the flowers and quickly came running back, grabbing the petals, akin to ascetics who encounter water in a desert, eagerly putting them into their mouths.

But no sooner had they eaten the flowers, the petals burst into flames like fire, causing the evil spirits to double over, rolling on the ground in agony.

"The Merit Flower."

The prison guards, upon witnessing this, trembled even more, not daring to make a move.

Sun Wukong's eyes swept over them, noting the weapons in their hands, as well as the copper juice and iron pills they carried.

Legend has it that evil spirits in hell drink copper juice and eat iron pills, and it seemed true.

"So that's how it is."

Sun Wukong suddenly recalled the Sun Wukong recorded in the Heavenly Book; after being suppressed under the Five Elements Mountain by Buddha, he too ate iron pills and drank copper juice.

The five hundred years under the Five Elements Mountain was essentially five hundred years of hellish cultivation.

Sun Wukong squinted slightly and rested on the rock.

Even the fools amongst the evil spirits now understood, this was an Immortal.

Some stray ghosts drifted over from all around, kneeling on the ground, their thin and cold figures starkly contrasted against the radiant Sun Wukong.

A boy being taken to the city of wrongful death by a prison guard saw this scene, and immediately broke free from the chains, pulling his sister and running to Sun Wukong's side, and knelt down.

"Is that water? Brother?"

His sister, who died at four, was still naive.

"Wise Monkey."

The boy replied.

He had seen his mother worshiping a wooden statue that looked just like the Demon Immortal before him.

"He is no longer the Wise Monkey."

Nearby, an Ox Demon transformed into an evil spirit heard the boy and couldn't help correcting him: "He is now the supreme Heavenly Emperor."

At the mention of the Heavenly Emperor, the bodies of the surrounding stray ghosts trembled.

"The Heavenly Emperor comes to the Underworld, surely for a significant purpose."

The Ox Demon rolled its eyes, sensing an opportunity.

Sun Wokong sat for a long while, then suddenly stood up.

"Seems like they are not coming."

The attitude of the Underworld was clear, and Sun Wukong stepped towards Yin Mountain.

All ghosts nearby shivered, not daring to approach.

But the Ox Demon followed him.

"Heavenly Emperor!"

He shouted loudly: "If the Heavenly Emperor wishes to reform the Underworld, I wish to lend my strength."

Sun Wukong stopped walking and glanced at him.

"You're not suitable."

With just one look, Sun Wukong saw through the intentions of the Ox Demon.

The Ox Demon wanted to profit from the chaos but had committed many evils in life, and Sun Wukong did not need such a subordinate.

He continued towards Yin Mountain.

"Heavenly Emperor!"

The Ox Demon still wanted to follow, but Sun Wukong snorted coldly, and a ring of fire formed around the Ox Demon out of nowhere, trapping it.

Terrified, the Ox Demon instantly knelt on the ground, saying nothing more.

This scene, along with others wanting to follow Sun Wukong, stopped altogether.

Only the boy, seemingly fearless of death, pulled his sister and followed.

"Brother..."

The girl was scared.

"Mom said, Wise Monkey isn't a bad person."

The boy said, "We aren't bad people either, he won't bully us."

Both children held hands and followed behind Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong sensed the two little ones behind him, subtly calculated with his fingers, and couldn't help but curl his lip.

These two children were actually intimately related to the future of the Underworld.

The word 'karma,' indeed profound beyond words.
