The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 36: I'm Not as Good as You

Immortal Zhen Yuan looked up at the sky.

The sky was clear, with no waterwalls visible anymore.

Sun Wukong found him: "Immortal, welcome back."

"You are truly wasteful of nature's gifts!"

Immortal Zhen Yuan snorted at him coldly: "I will change it back sooner or later."

Wukong didn't take it seriously, knowing that Immortal Zhen Yuan was merely venting.

"The Flower Spirits are almost done building the node," said Sun Wukong. "Want to take a look?"

"Flower Spirits?"

His eyes brightened, and as if nothing was amiss, he followed Sun Wukong to the Flower Valley to the west.

Technically, Flower Spirits are not demons but rather spirits who take the form of winged boys and girls, yet are only the size of a thumb and reside among grass blades and flower clusters. To prevent them from being accidentally crushed by other demons, Sun Wukong had relocated them to the Flower Valley.

Entering the Flower Valley, the two immediately heard bustling sounds.

Countless small Flower Spirits were transporting tiny stones, with larger Flower Spirits casting spells to build platforms throughout the Flower Valley.

The Flower Spirits had sought to build their own nodes like other demons, a task they had repeated for several years until today's completion.

"Great King." A few Flower Spirits folded their wings and landed in Sun Wukong's palm, asking, "How do you like our work?"

"Very well done."

Sun Wukong gently tapped their heads with his thumb.

"Immortal, let's begin."

Sun Wukong and Immortal Zhen Yuan finalized the last steps of the node together.

Before leaving Flower Valley, the Flower Spirits brought them some carefully concocted Flower Dew on lotus leaves.

Immortal Zhen Yuan greatly favored the Flower Dew made by these Flower Spirits, finding it as delectable as Jadescent Nectar.

His only complaint was, "Why do you have more again?"

The Flower Dew in Sun Wukong's hand was clearly more than what Immortal Zhen Yuan had.

"Great King is Great King, of course he gets more," the Flower Spirits densely crowded on Sun Wukong's head and shoulders, making it quite cramped. "If it weren't for the Great King's face, we wouldn't even give you the Flower Dew!"

Immortal Zhen Yuan puffed up with annoyance, the Flower Spirits looked cute, but their words were not.

"Alright, Immortal, don't be angry."

Sun Wukong lifted the lotus leaf, pouring half of the Flower Dew to Immortal Zhen Yuan: "This is for you."

Immortal Zhen Yuan immediately smiled broadly.

"Well worth the Flat Peach I gave you!"

He cheerfully began to drink.

After finishing the Flower Dew and bidding farewell to the Flower Spirits, the two then returned to Shuilian Cave.

Today, Sun Wukong was to unveil the development blueprint for Huaguo Mountain, and all the Demon Kings gathered at Shuilian Cave, eagerly waiting.

Immortal Zhen Yuan was also quite interested in the blueprint.

However, when Sun Wukong took out the blueprint, he delayed the unveiling and instead pondered over it.

Then, he made a surprising move: he tore up the blueprint.

"This design is not good."

Sun Wukong pulled out a second blueprint and laid it on the stone table, saying, "This one is more suitable."

Instantly, all the Demon Kings curiously gathered around the stone table to take a look.

On the blueprint featuring the topography of Huaguo Mountain, white lines and dots crisscrossed.

Ao Luan furrowed his brows: "Brother, what are these white lines?"

"Roads."

Sun Wukong answered.

"And these dots?" the Leopard Demon King pointed at the dots and asked, "Could these be the distribution points for the 72 caves?"

Sun Wukong nodded, such obvious locations were naturally not mistaken by the Demon Kings.

Those were not only the distribution points for the demons but also highly overlapped with the Spiritual Network nodes.

"These are your respective territories, and I will redesign caves and towns for you, allowing the lesser demons to grow smoothly."

At Sun Wukong's words, the 72 Cave Masters were delighted, yet at the same time, they were very puzzled, "Great King, where is the Royal City?"

On the entire map, they saw no location that could serve as the Royal City.

"Royal City will be designed by you."

Sun Wukong replied, "Submit the designs to me for review."

The Demon Kings discussed briefly; it was no difficult matter.

"But, Great King..." they continued to ask, "you haven't mentioned where the Royal City will be built?"

Sun Wukong slightly smiled, "In the sky."

"Oh, the... the sky!"

The Demon Kings were taken aback by the realization.

"Brother," Ao Luan frowned deeply, "stop joking around!"

"I am not joking."

Sun Wukong sighed inwardly, these demons' imaginations were so lacking.

"I will provide the land, but the Royal City must be built in the sky."

Everyone was dumbstruck.

"Wise, wise brother..." Immortal Zhenyuan asked, "Do you know how to make the Royal City float in the sky?"

"I do not."

Sun Wukong shook his head.

Everyone was astonished: If you don't know how, then why insist on building it in the sky?

"If I knew, what use would I have for you?"

Sun Wukong said, "You must figure out a way, to build a floating Royal City in the sky within twenty years."

Twenty years.

Everyone was in an uproar; that duration was far too short!

However, Ao Luan suddenly gasped, as if she realized something.

"What did you think of?"

Standing beside her, Ao Moang asked. He seemed to have glimpsed something as well but couldn't grasp the key point.

"Nothing, I was just thinking..."

Ao Luan said, "If we can build the Royal City in the sky, then what can't we achieve?"

Ao Moang suddenly had an epiphany.

He understood what Sun Wukong implied in his words.

"Wise brother."

Immortal Zhenyuan seemed to understand as well: "Do you intend to advance Huaguo Mountain's technology through this method?"

Building a city that floats in the sky was no simple matter—it involved ensuring that all aspects of life such as clothing, food, accommodation, water supply, and transportation could be managed in the sky—it would inevitably advance technology in all sectors of Huaguo Mountain.

Sun Wukong nodded.

"I want you to prepare a comprehensive master plan, setting goals for every industry, detailing how they must progress to sustain life in the sky."

He hoped to set an unprecedented ambitious goal for Huaguo Mountain. If successful, it would bring about a dual advancement in both the demons' thoughts and technology.

Ao Luan was somewhat excited, but after her excitement subsided, she felt a chill.

"Brother, is this achievable?"

The other Demon Kings also showed doubtful expressions; this plan sounded too fantastical.

But Sun Wukong nodded: "The power of the Spiritual Network grows by the day, and in ten years it could support a Royal City floating in the air."

The Immortal Stones scattered throughout Huaguo Mountain were his avatars; he understood the growth rate of the Spiritual Network's power very well.

The demons still found it unimaginable but dared not question Sun Wukong; they went their separate ways to research.

Immortal Zhenyuan stayed behind.

"Wise brother, if the Royal City succeeds, won't Huaguo Mountain become just like the Heavenly Palace?"

He couldn't help but ask, "What exactly do you plan to achieve with the development of trade and technology advancements?"

"Immortal, I think all the Immortals and Buddhas have been walking the wrong path." Sun Wukong said, "With the Royal City, I hope to remind them of four words they have forgotten."

"Which four words?"

Immortal Zhenyuan asked.

Sun Wukong smiled and conveyed the answer to Immortal Zhenyuan telepathically.

Immortal Zhenyuan was astounded, and then burst into laughter.

"I am not your equal!"
