The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 376: The Object of Search

In terms of talent, Qing Yuanzi was second to none.

He finished the book in just one week.

"He is talented indeed."

Sun Wukong said with some emotion after reading the book in Shuilian Cave.

"Let's get this book published right away!"

Houtu squirmed eagerly on Sun Wukong's body.

Sun Wukong nodded, then frowned, "Can you get off me?"

"It's more fun to read together."

Hanging from Sun Wukong's neck, Houtu looked up at Ao Luan.

Ao Luan had been holding back for several days and was getting a bit overwhelmed.

"Your Highness."

With a stern face, she said, "Please don't hang onto your brother all day long."

"Why?"

Houtu asked Ao Luan, "Is there something wrong with a mother holding her child?"

Ao Luan was stunned.

Mother?

She felt a little angry; this goddess always seemed to take advantage of her brother.

But upon reflection, Ao Luan realized that Sun Wukong was born from nature, with the earth being his mother.

Being the Earth Mother Goddess, Houtu was not wrong in saying so.

"The goddess is the mother of my brother..."

Ao Luan murmured quietly, starting to become somewhat constrained.

"Hello, daughter-in-law."

Houtu spoke up.

Ao Luan's face turned red instantly.

"I, I still have something else to do..."

She ran off, steam practically coming out of her head.

Houtu watched her leave: "She is really amusing."

"Having fun?"

Sun Wukong asked coldly.

"Not bad."

Houtu leaned on his shoulder, "Quick, I've finished this one, let's read Fairy Chang'e's 'Returning Wild Geese'."

Sun Wukong picked up another book.

This was Fairy Chang'e's best-selling novel, the only one that could challenge Qing Yuanzi's, reportedly every female demon at Huaguo Mountain would buy a copy.

Sun Wukong opened the book, and Houtu eagerly watched from behind, but he didn't quite understand it.

"This isn't the right book for me."

After flipping through, he said so.

"You have great love in your heart."

Satisfied, Houtu got off him and said, "These trivial loves may be too insignificant for you."

"Great love?"

Sun Wukong shook his head, asking, "What is great love?"

"Everyone's great love is different."

Houtu replied, "You are unlike the Jade Emperor and Buddha; throughout the Three Realms, you are truly unique."

Sun Wukong's great love concealed cruelty.

Houtu knew that this kind of great love would be easy to misinterpret in the future, but even if misunderstood, the world would surely realize that this cruelty represented an even deeper love.

"Great King."

At that moment, the Long Armed Ape Monkey walked into Shuilian Cave.

It handed a letter to Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong was surprised that someone would write him a letter, and upon opening it, it was from the Human King of the Southern Continent.

"What does it say?"

Houtu asked curiously.

"The Bodhisattva Guanyin descended to the Mortal World and went to the Southern Continent."

Sun Wukong answered.

The Buddha would naturally send messengers to persuade the kingdoms, and the Southern Continent was no exception.

But the Bodhisattva Guanyin's actions were somewhat strange.

"Your Majesty."

Sun Wukong couldn't help but ask, "Is Buddha truly searching for the Jade Emperor?"

"Of course, it's true."

Houtu picked up a pastry from the stone table, and while eating, she said, "If he wasn't looking for the Jade Emperor, why would those two old men help him?"

"Is Buddha only looking for the Jade Emperor?"

Sun Wukong asked further, "The Human King told me that The Bodhisattva Guanyin asked him to find a glowing pearl. What is it?"

"I do not know of such a thing."

Houtu licked her fingers: "Although I stand with you, I cannot be overly partial. Otherwise, I wouldn't deserve to be called a mother."

Sun Wukong found his answer in her words.

"Buddha is indeed looking for other things."

He thought to himself that there must be a deeper meaning behind Buddha's actions, and perhaps seeking the Jade Emperor was just a diversion.

"Let's investigate."

Sun Wukong made a decision, but when he turned back to look at Houtu, she had already laid her head on the table, soundly asleep.

She is also quite the troublesome one.

In Chang'an, The Bodhisattva Guanyin sat resting in the Imperial Palace.

"Bodhisattva."

The maiden serving beside her couldn't help but complain, "With such a prestigious status, you are warmly welcomed wherever you go. Yet, the Human King is indifferent. How can he be so unappreciative?"

It had already been three days since they arrived in Chang'an, but the Human King had summoned them only once and had not paid them any attention since.

The maiden felt an urge to set the Imperial Palace on fire.

"Patience, do not be agitated."

The Bodhisattva Guanyin spoke, her voice gentle: "This is the Heavenly Dynasty, different from other nations. One must not be arrogant."

The Southern Continent, as the most influential among the Four Great Continents, has movements that impact the entire situation in the Mortal World. Guanyin did not wish for the maiden to spoil things.

After another two days, the Human King finally summoned them once more.

"The item sought by the Bodhisattva, my people have searched throughout the Southern Continent, but to no avail."

The Human King said, "As for the reincarnated Jade Emperor, we have no idea where to begin the search."

"Amitabha."

The Bodhisattva Guanyin brought her hands together and said, "Regarding the matter of the Heavenly Taoist Sect..."

"The Southern Continent does not forbid the Wanling Heavenly Dao."

The Human King replied, "The Heavenly Taoist Sect stirs unrest in other nations because those rulers are unjust. The Southern Continent is peacefully governed, unafraid of them."

Not long after the Heavenly Taoist Sect was established, Sun Wukong had sent a demon to explain it to the Human King.

The Human King had studied the teachings of the Heavenly Taoist Sect, and did not see it as harmful to the Southern Continent.

The Bodhisattva Guanyin understood.

In reality, the Heavenly Taoist Sect was the key to this journey.

With the great influence of the Southern Continent, if they were to ban the Heavenly Taoist Sect, the human nations of the Western Continent and the Eastern Divine Continents would surely follow suit.

However, the Human King refused to ban it, so the Buddhists would have to put in much more effort.

"Your Majesty, the Heavenly Taoist Sect will bring great chaos to the Three Realms."

The Bodhisattva Guanyin didn't give up hope and continued, "If this sect were eradicated, Your Majesty would earn boundless merit, transcending to the Pure Land after death, enjoying eternal serenity."

The Human King's expression darkened.

"I have heard that Buddha seeks to establish the Pure Land, and that nobles from various nations, as long as they devoutly follow Buddha, can transcend into the Pure Land upon death. Is this true?"

"It is indeed true."

The Bodhisattva Guanyin nodded and said, "Isn't this better than the Six Paths of Reincarnation?"

The Human King held back the impulse to slam the table: "I do not seek eternal serenity. Bodhisattva, you may leave."

"... Then, this humble monk shall take her leave."

The Bodhisattva Guanyin sighed, glanced at the civil and military officials in the hall, and then left the Imperial Palace.

"That Human King truly can't recognise what's due to him!"

On the way back to Lingshan, the maiden was somewhat angry, "Why did you not teach him a lesson, Bodhisattva?"

"A person who has left the household life must not give in to anger lightly."

Guanyin glanced at the maiden: "Your resolve is weak. When we return, you will be punished with several years of solitary meditation."

The maiden immediately closed her mouth.

Guanyin shook her head gently, her gaze filled with worry as she looked towards Lingshan.

She actually did not agree with Buddha's current actions, as interfering with the Mortal World disturbed the purity of Buddhism.

However, as a member of Buddhism, Guanyin had no choice but to follow orders.

"Who knows when the items sought by Buddha will be found."

Guanyin thought to herself that only by locating those items could Lingshan halt this great calamity of the Three Realms.

Yet the search had already continued for another two years.
