The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 60: Gold Star Taibai Visits Again

A year later, Sun Wukong was giving a lecture to a group of demons and the Demon King.

He suddenly stopped and stood up, looking towards the sea.

"Great King."

Mei Hu, who was listening to the lecture, asked: "What's the matter?"

"A guest has arrived." Sun Wukong rose into the air: "Today's lecture ends here. I need to go to the Royal City to entertain the guest."

The demons were all very surprised. Whose guest was worthy of Sun Wukong's personal hospitality?

The visitor was Gold Star Taibai.

Gold Star Taibai looked over the Royal City. After several years, the Royal City had been basically completed.

It was the best-planned city in the human world, with pavilions and towers standing tall and strong, overlapping eaves and arches, and the golden glazed tiles shining under the sun like countless stars, dazzling and bright.

"Gold Star Taibai."

Sun Wukong flew over: "You've arrived earlier than expected."

Gold Star Taibai smiled at him and then asked: "Why is the Royal City in this color scheme?"

Sun Wukong did not answer; another voice rang out.

"Because my younger brother's fur is golden."

Immortal Zhen Yuan flew up from the library of the Royal City and greeted Gold Star Taibai.

The Royal City's color scheme was mainly golden. Sun Wukong didn't like too much glitter and splendor, but the Demon Kings unanimously believed that this color could best reflect his characteristics.

Ao Luan was even more insistent.

"How come you're here?"

Gold Star Taibai inquired of Immortal Zhen Yuan.

"My disciple is working here, so I came to have a look." Immortal Zhen Yuan answered: "The scenery here is beautiful, and it's very helpful for easing the mind."

That piqued the interest of Gold Star Taibai: "Then I must take a look."

Once he spoke, Sun Wukong naturally wouldn't neglect. The three descended to the ground and began admiring the Royal City.

Gold Star Taibai was full of praise for the design of the Royal City, especially fond of the various murals.

Those simple yet beautiful murals were almost all images of animals and demons.

Among these animals were eagles and egrets flying together, lions and horses running side by side, white deer and antelopes lowering their heads to drink, and squirrels and monkeys playing in trees—nearly every animal could be found.

"It indeed has the characteristics of Huaguo Mountain."

Gold Star Taibai thought. Without a doubt, these animals were the demons of the 72 caves of Huaguo Mountain.

"Why are all these murals in pairs?"

Gold Star Taibai asked Sun Wukong.

"It's not just in pairs."

Sun Wukong began to explain, the murals of the Royal City rarely featured animals alone, the purpose is to strengthen the psychological bonds between the demons.

"It's just some symbolic meaning."

Sun Wukong said to Gold Star Taibai.

Gold Star Taibai nodded, these murals were of course symbolic and wouldn't play a big role.

However, from these patterns of animals, it could be seen that Sun Wukong wanted to show a sense of inclusiveness through the Royal City.

Apart from the animals, images of transformed demons were also visible everywhere on the murals.

Gold Star Taibai also saw paintings of humans and Immortals on a wall.

He couldn't help but stop and take several more looks; the artists of the Royal City were quite skilled, and through some murals, outsiders could develop a good impression of this place.

Here, there was a building every ten steps, and a pavilion every hundred steps, the beauty of the architecture was also displayed to its fullest.

"When can it ascend to the sky?"

Gold Star Taibai began to look forward to the appearance of the Royal City ascending to the heavens.

"Two more years." Immortal Zhen Yuan helped answer: "You'll just need to sleep twice."

"That's for sure."

Gold Star Taibai nodded.

Two years at Huaguo Mountain equate to just two days in the heavens.

The Four Great Continents haven't seen much change, yet Huaguo Mountain is transforming at an alarming speed. Every few days when he descends to the mortal world, Gold Star Taibai witnesses something brand new.

He asked Sun Wukong, "Can this Royal City really ascend?"

"The technology for levitation is no longer an issue."

Sun Wukong answered, "It's just that the other outcomes haven't met our expectations."

"Oh?"

Gold Star Taibai suddenly became curious, "What expectations?"

"We originally wanted it to fly in the sky."

Sun Wukong provided an example.

The initial design of the Royal City was for both levitation and flight, but in the recent years of experimentation, they realized that the amount of Spiritual Energy required to move a city through the heavens was immensely vast, and they have now essentially abandoned that function.

After giving up on mobility, there were several discussions at Huaguo Mountain. In the end, Sun Wukong decided to position the Royal City near the coastal waters of the mountain. This way, it wouldn't block the sunlight on Huaguo Mountain and would also be within the Barrier.

"So that's how it is."

Gold Star Taibai nodded, "So you mean to say, you've removed the capability of flight?"

"Not exactly."

Sun Wukong shook his head; in times of danger, the Royal City could still be temporarily moved.

Gold Star Taibai felt that achieving even this was no small feat.

One could see gardens everywhere in the Royal City, and Gold Star Taibai was quite discerning about garden architecture.

In his view, the quality of a city hinged on the ingeniousness of its gardens.

He was very satisfied with the gardens of the Royal City. From any given stone bridge looking around, there were clear pools encircled, full with duckweed, and the scenery of pavilions and terraces was exceptionally beautiful.

Even the small windows on the walls, when looked out of, displayed either a lake view or a vista of green mountains and bamboo, almost like a painting.

The garden landscaping here could be considered the pinnacle of mortal artistry, which opened Gold Star Taibai's eyes to new wonders.

The exquisite details of the Royal City were probably unmatched by any city in the Four Great Continents.

"The Monkey King surprises me time and again; it's a real pity you're not in the Heavenly Palace."

Thinking thus, Gold Star Taibai then asked Sun Wukong, "What official title would the Jade Emperor have to bestow upon you for you to agree to ascend to heaven with me?"

Sun Wukong pondered this question in his heart—it wasn't a simple one.

Gold Star Taibai had asked directly what title he desired, which certainly meant that the Jade Emperor truly intended to recruit him.

But before Sun Wukong could voice his question, Immortal Zhenyuan beat him to it, asking, "Gold Star Taibai, did the Jade Emperor instruct you to inquire what official position my worthy brother desires?"

Gold Star Taibai shook his head.

"His Majesty has not yet spoken."

He said, "But it won't be many days now."

Gold Star Taibai was a close courtier of the Jade Emperor and had a clear grasp of his thoughts—ever since the incident with the transportation of Longevity Mountain, the Jade Emperor had taken a keen interest in Sun Wukong and harbored the thought of recruiting him.

He has not yet spoken, but once the Royal City of Huaguo Mountain achieves levitation, he would surely initiate the offer.

"This time is different from before; it's not just me recommending you."

Gold Star Taibai said to Sun Wukong, "After consulting with several Immortal Officials, we will definitely arrange a good post for you, the Monkey King."

Sun Wukong and Immortal Zhenyuan exchanged a smile.

"These past years, the Immortals of Huaguo Mountain, indeed, it was you, Gold Star Taibai, who called for them."

Sun Wukong expressed his gratitude to Gold Star Taibai.

Gold Star Taibai shook his head, "Not all me."

He had invited a few close Immortals to descend to the mortal world because only by understanding Huaguo Mountain could they comprehend why he recommended Sun Wukong.

However, the Immortals who incarnated to visit Huaguo Mountain were more than a few, and among them, aside from those with good intentions, some bore a watchful wariness.

"Tota Li Heavenly King has never been fond of demons and is even less inclined to see Huaguo Mountain grow powerful."

Gold Star Taibai asked Sun Wukong, "He's also sent observers to the Lower Realm, has anyone caused conflict with you?"

A red beam from the transformation of the Stone Lion flashed across Wukong's mind.

But still, he shook his head and said, "No."

The word had barely left his mouth when an unexpected incident occurred.
