Chapter 4186: Maybe
An Echo of their own. Primordial Demon Beasts can’t be killed... unless the very thing that gave origin to them was used. They all felt it when that pressure assaulted them a few minutes ago.
"Still..." Roan had his doubts. "The Werdlem Empire knew you were coming. How?"
Default shook his head in response. "I don’t know. I told you before. The Echo is not a sentient being. The Echo doesn’t give me orders through words. It simply lets me know what it needs through our connection. I was the very first Primordial Demon Beast, so our connection is strong enough for it to happen. And through me, I can pass the same orders forward to the others."
Roan pondered a bit. "Alright. Then what happened after you were all captured? Obviously, the Werdlem Empire hasn’t created a new Echo. Had they done so, they wouldn’t need the Bubble anymore. The entire Great Void would be in their hands."
"Who knows?" Default shrugged. "Did you forget? We were in no position to investigate anything. Only now, after so many years, did you finally come back with the Control Orb to set me free. How would I investigate anything else in my previous condition?"
Rean took from there. "Have you thought about this? The Werdlem Empire knew the Primordial Beasts were coming. What if their presence was necessary? What if you were actually lured here? After all, you were the twelve pillars. The Werdlem Empire might have found a way to intervene with The Echo for that very purpose."
Soltrex could see that happening. "The Bubble works because we are here, but nothing says that it is the only thing using our essence to work. Whatever the Werdlem Empire was planning to do to create a new Echo might need our essence to work."
"That is likely connected to my other question," Roan said. "Why doesn’t the Echo finish things on its own? With its incredible power, the Werdlem Empire shouldn’t be able to do anything."
Default nodded. "You are correct there, and I should have answered that question, but I ended up deviating from it. The reason The Echo can’t finish the job on its own is that, for some reason, it can’t act on the Werdlem Empire."
"Hum?" Rean was confused. "But we just felt its power a second ago! You have it in the palm of your hand right now, and we are in the Werdlem Universe."
"Oh? This?" Default shook his head. "This is nothing. The pressure you felt earlier was truly meaningless. The Echo couldn’t really kill you here, only outside. That’s all it can do, and only for a limited time. It is far from enough to face the Werdlem Empire."
"So that’s how it is..." Roan said, thinking about the information. "That answers most of our doubts, I guess. But that also begs the question. We want to get out of this place, but would it be okay to leave without checking the Werdlem Empire’s progress?"
Roan looked at Rean. "Rean said that the Primordial Demon Beasts might have been dragged here to have their power used for that same purpose. Although it is not guaranteed, I think he is probably right."
Rean sighed. "So what would we do? Investigate the Werdlem Empire? Try to stop their plans? All that shit? We don’t even know if we are right or not, and now that the system is gone, I am even less inclined to stay here. We should go ahead with the plan to break the bubble and get out."
"In fact, that’s one more reason for us to leave," Nyxara commented. "If we are necessary for this New Echo to be created, once we are gone, the Werdlem Empire won’t be able to finish the creation of their new Echo. The Echo doesn’t have sentience. It only felt the threat and sent us here to deal with it. Worse still. If we are truly necessary for the Werdlem Empire’s plan to work, The Echo was simply used to get us here without it noticing. We should leave as soon as possible."
Default agreed with Nyxara. "That’s the conclusion I reached a long time ago. The Echo has no sentience, but it can feel me and can feel my thoughts. Once again, it is present everywhere. Now that I reached that conclusion, The Echo won’t force us to stay, as it can feel through me that staying is actually what really threatens it."
Roan and the others nodded. As Rean mentioned, it wasn’t like they could go out there and find where this project was being worked on. Even if they could, there is no doubt that that place would be impenetrable. Maybe it wasn’t even in the Werdlem Empire, but in the Celestial Plane, using the Werdlem Empire as a bridge or something like that. They simply didn’t know.
"Hum?" Kentucky noticed something, though. "It doesn’t make sense. When Default tried to tell us about The Echo and the plans to create a new one, The Echo tried to stop him. Why would The Echo do such a thing? It would be way better if we did know everything."
"Maybe it is the information itself," Celis commented. "Knowing that it might be possible to create a new Echo is not something you want others to think about."
"That makes even less sense," Kentucky insisted. "The cat’s out of the bag already. The Werdlem Empire knows about it. Whether it is possible or not doesn’t matter anymore. The point is that The Echo intervened and tried to get rid of them with the Primordial Beasts. Once again, it makes no sense to protect this information anymore."
Suddenly, Roan’s expression turned dark. "Fuck!"
They all looked at Roan. "What happened?"
Roan shook his head, and he looked at Rean, Kentucky, and Celis. He used his Soul Connection to pass them a message, including Sister Orb in the Celestial Soul Dimensional Realm.
Immediately, Rean, Celis, and Kentucky’s expression also turned terrible. "But that..."
Roan nodded. "It is the only thing that makes sense."
The Primordial Beasts were confused. "What are you talking about?"
Roan turned to them. "Why did the Echo try to stop you from telling us about everything?" Roan asked back and answered straight away. "We thought that the Werdlem Empire still hadn’t created this New Echo. But... is it truly a New Echo? Do they need it? What if, instead, they are trying to control the original Echo, the same one you are connected to?"
"Just now, when you tried to speak about it. Could it be that The Echo tried to stop you because it has been configured to do so? What if the Werdlem Empire already has control over it, just not entirely? If that was the case, it also explains how The Echo originally brought you here. Above all, it explains why the Werdlem Empire knew you were coming!"
