Chapter 1738: True Commander
The time for the second attack arrived, and everybody rushed to the meeting room. Wang Wei stood at the front of the room to conduct a last-minute session to remind everybody of their roles.
"Group A," Wang Wei said. "Upon descending on your allocated Node World, you will only arrive in the outer area of the formation. Your objective is to find the Array Node and destroy it. Our mission is to destroy at least a quarter of the outer nodes — only then can we force our way into the inner area with the 3800 Chaos Source Worlds.
"The fastest and easiest way to find the nodes is to kill 90% of the world’s cultivators or 50% of the entire population. However, such an approach will form a backlash from the world’s Heavenly Dao, so you can choose a less drastic approach. The mission’s length is 20,000 Yuan Epoch, and with a significant amount of freedom."
All Group A members received an information talisman outlining how to find the formation node and other precautions needed to succeed in this mission. Most of these members had a worried look on their faces, especially the Paragons. Wang Wei could guess their concerns: what if their world contained a Saint? What were they supposed to do?
Their fears were not as valid as they thought. For this mission, the Tribunal Lords have calculated which Node Worlds have Saints and how many there are. So, while a Paragon will be assigned to such worlds, they will have Saints as leaders to help them. Of course, these calculations are not absolute. The Reverse Black Stone Array is a second-step array with its own protection mechanism, and the Infinite Divine Court’s powerhouses will interfere with the landing process, leaving much room for error.
’Tension is not necessarily a bad thing,’ Wang Wei thought, which was easy for him since his true body was cultivating while everybody was risking their lives.
"Group B," Wang Wei continued. "Our priority is defense, defense, and defense. After activating the World Refining Array, we can expect the court’s desperate attempt at penetrating our defense and trying to stop us. Over the past few years, you’ve been trained on how to borrow power from our Heaven and Earth Origin Cycle Array, and now it’s time to use your training."
Wang Wei will be the Team Leader for Group B, so he will pay more attention to them. As for Group C? Well, they aren’t technically a group. All members are Tribunal Lords, and their target is one of the Grand Constructs; Wang Wei doesn’t even know which one.
"That’s it for the briefing meeting," Wang Wei concluded. "Lords, do you have anything to add?"
"No," the Time Cardinal calmly replied.
"In that case, let’s begin."
With these words, the Tribunal Lords sprang into action. Firstly, the Trinity Venerable activated the World Refining Array, which sent a noticeable tremor throughout the Chaos Universe. Then, everybody heard a brief, fleeting, painful scream that served as a minor mind attack — well, for the Primordial Race that is. For the Divine Race that has made this timeline their home, that scream elicited the most profound sorrow from their souls.
The scream reminded him of moments in their life in which their mothers or most loved ones were in terrible pain, and there was nothing they could do. The empathy and feeling of anger and powerlessness due to the lack of ability resonated, resulting in tears dripping down their faces. Everybody cried: from infants that were just born to ruthless Paragons whose emotions had been slowly eroded by time.
Primordial Saints have better control of themselves, so they do not embarrass themselves. But they still felt that almost desperate sense of sorrow. Meanwhile, all five Tribunal Lords manifested their presence, their eyes watching the Heaven and Earth Origin Cycle Array like hawks watching their prey. None of them hid the fact that they were prepared for a cruel battle even more intense than the first attack.
Wang Wei noticed a strange tension in the meeting room, and he instantly guessed why. All these people began to wonder whether the Primordial Timeline would face the same fate. Typically, they would never have such an idea since they are the original timeline, with many protections and advantages over the others. However, the Infinite Divine Court’s invasion has broken the facade of invincibility that the Primordial Race always boasted of.
Wang Wei secretly sighed. Such an atmosphere was terrible for morale. So, he waited for one of the cardinals or the Tribunal Lord to say something inspiring to everybody else. However, everybody remained quiet as a mouse. Even worse, Wang Wei could feel their blatant stare, indicating that he should do his job as the commander.
’Damn it, can’t they tell this kind of thing would be best done by someone with the highest strength?’ Wang Wei cursed. He secretly exhaled to calm down. A brief analysis of the situation, and Wang Wei understood why they chose him. The Tribunal Lords held no loyalty to the Primordial Timeline. After growing up under Grand Dao’s constant suppression and management, they have never felt any pride in being a Primordial Existence.
The only advantage is that they can cultivate directly to the realm of [True Transcendence] without any issues. If not for this single fact, these Saints could not care less if the Primordial Timeline were destroyed or swallowed by someone else one day. Meanwhile, the cardinals are essentially government agents of the Primordial Timeline. Any kind of rhetoric they used to try to galvanize these people would sound like propaganda and not fool anyone — especially those Old Saints.
’And now, they left this mess to me,’ Wang Wei thought, wishing he could curse or slap somebody. He calmly controlled his breathing before thinking about the following few words coming out of his mouth:
"Comfort or contentment breeds mediocrity," Wang Wei uttered, his gentle but piercing voice spread to every corner of the room. "Our Primordial Timeline has the most direct path of Transcendence. We don’t have to compete with alternate selves or worry about not having a path ahead. With the golden protection around our timeline, we never had to worry about invasion from anyone in the endless timelines of the Infinite Trichiliocosm. Although we have our own problems, they are nothing compared to the ones other timelines have to experience.
"However, such a comfortable environment means less pressure, easier competition, and less worry. We do not have the shark-like instinct or desires of other timelines to do whatever is necessary to reach the top."
Wang Wei’s sharp gaze scanned the room.
"From a certain perspective, the Divine Race’s invasion may not have been such a bad thing. I know those words sound blasphemous, but it’s true. Their presence is a wake-up call to everybody. It’s a reminder that we no longer have unbreakable walls that can protect our peace and leisure.
"Their presence is a reminder that a new world is coming — a cruel world unlike anything we can imagine."
Wang Wei squinted, which somehow intensified the tension in the room.
"A cruel world where Paragons will have to compete with their alternate selves, just like everybody else in other timelines. A cruel world where everybody will have to fight and compete against the very best the Infinite Trichiliocosm has to offer, and you can imagine how fierce the people who can stand at the pinnacle of their timelines despite so many rules and limitations."
Wang Wei smiled, or maybe grinned. Regardless, his smile was not reassuring in the sense that it should have been. But somehow, it seems to contain the power to awaken the fierceness or ferocity hidden deep in these people’s minds.
"You fear that one day our timeline will suffer a similar fate?" Wang Wei asked. "Well, you should. That fear should stay with you for the rest of your life. You should keep it tight, always on the back of your mind, on the hinge of your afterthought. Do not let it go. Simultaneously, do not let it break you.
"No. As Primordial Entities, we may have lived most of our lives in a sheltered environment, but that doesn’t mean we are weak. So, use that fear as fuel, use it as motivation, use it as a reminder to ensure that whatever fate this timeline — Timeline NP89076H, which is not even worthy of a name — faces will never happen to us. Can you do that?"
Wang Wei’s authoritative voice finally resonated with these people."
"Yes, Commander," all the Primals and Paragons responded together. Most of the Primordial Saints remained quiet, but Wang Wei could see their silent approval in their eyes or in their nodding. He secretly sighed in relief. He knew that from now on, his status as Commander was guaranteed. Even if he went a little too far, people will tolerate him a bit more.
"Excellent," Wang Wei nodded. "Now, let’s use this expedition to announce our arrival to the Infinite Trichiliocosm."
