Chapter 1847: Highest Title
The Source Qi Cardinal’s eyes shone with excitement. Although the Grand Dao in this timeline is nothing but a small branch, its power is indeed enough to elevate her strength back to what it was. However, her excitement immediately dwindled when she saw the cold and indifferent look on everybody’s face in the room.
She was not the only one. Wang Wei was also observing everybody. These people had two choices: either allow one of their own to ascend to a higher level or someone else who had just embarrassed them. He wondered what they would choose.
"Why is the Heaven Cardinal so excited?" Wang Wei thought. The facial expressions and emotions of these powerful entities are usually harder to read. Still, the Heaven Cardinal seemed to have lost control of his emotions after hearing Wang Wei’s suggestion.
The Source Qi Cardinal frowned while sighing to herself. If these people wouldn’t even allow one of their own to become too powerful, how could they allow her to improve? In this scenario, even the Heaven Cardinal would not agree. So, Source Qi’s eyes also turned cold as she asked the room: "Do any of you have a better plan?"
No one said anything for a while. The situation was dire, and as long as Death Reverence was this powerful, there was nothing they could do. However, in their eyes, the situation wasn’t dire yet.
"Can’t you contact Grand Dao and end this expedition?" Trinity Venerable asked.
"I’ve tried, but there was no response," Source Qi shook her head.
"By now, Grand Dao must be distracted keeping eyes on the Beyonder. How would she have time to help us?" The Heaven Cardinal sneered.
"In that case, our only hope is the Highest Sovereign," the Slaughter Ancestor added. "Didn’t he make a move during the Chaos Origin Realm? We just need to wait, and he’ll interfere. Of all the parties with vested interest in this timeline, he’s the one who most does not want something to happen to this timeline."
"You’re being too optimistic," Karma Root Monarch frowned. "Death Reverence has been acting in the shadows for a while. Don’t you think he would have already learned about what happened in the Chaos Origin Realm and made preparations?"
"Are you saying the Infinite Divine Court is not a feasible path?"
"It is, but it’s not as reliable as you think."
"Then, what do you suggest we do?"
"Didn’t we plan to invade their formation and destroy it from the inside?" The Karma Monarch asked. "We can use the same plan, but to make contact with the Infinite Divine Court. After communicating, maybe we can find a solution to our current problem."
"After everything that has happened, you want us to work with them?" the Primordial Heaven Sword Saint asked.
"Why not? There are no eternal enemies. Now, our interests are aligned. I don’t see a reason we cannot ally."
"This plan is feasible," the Trinity Venerable stated. "But we are still ignoring the primary issue: the enemy’s strength. Do you think they will just watch us ask for help?"
"Not to mention, we have already lost control of both formations. The previous methods of penetrating the Reverse Black Stone Array are probably no longer possible," the Erudite Duchess added.
"Can’t you regain control?" The Karma Root Monarch asked.
"I don’t know, but even if I could, do I dare? These arrays are the keys to their plans. Do you think they will allow us to mess with them?"
"Can’t you take back control without affecting their affairs?"
"That’s beyond my ability," the Duchess shook her head.
"I can," the Trinity Venerable added. "I even have a second-step formation plate that I can add to the Heaven and Earth Origin Cycle Array, creating a sub-array that only belongs to us."
Everybody’s eyes lit up. Array Plates were one of the array Array Masters’ creations; they created portable arrays. Saint Arrays are already difficult to create, let alone condensing them into plates.
"What do you need?"
"The Commander’s process of regaining control — I need all the information." All eyes turned to Wang Wei, and without saying another word, Wang Wei waved his hand to condense the information in a talisman. Of course, he did not give them everything. His bottom line has always been his headquarters, the place with the artificially created Source Chaos World with a Saint-tier Heavenly Dao. That place is home base and the last bastion of safety in this chaotic world.
Trinity Venerable was surprised by how forthcoming he was, especially given how his ideas had been rejected. However, he said nothing else and just checked the information. The Venerable’s eyes twinkled before glancing at Wang Wei.
"Is something wrong?"
"I didn’t know Commander had such talent for arrays."
"Well, I’m a well of surprises," Wang Wei calmly replied.
"There is no issue, right?" The Duchess asked.
"Everything is fine. Give me some time, and I’ll lay out the Black Tortoise Array as a sub-array. With its defensive capabilities, we should be able to defend ourselves against Death Reverence for a while."
"With a base of our own, we can plan for the future," the Karma Root Monarch nodded. The meeting continued for a few more minutes before everybody dispersed. However, Wang Wei did not return to his quarters since the Duchess asked him to visit hers.
They met in this quiet pavilion floating along this beautiful river. Sitting opposite the Duchess, she poured him tea. "Let me do it," Wang Wei said.
"No need. Today, you’re my guest." Wang Wei glanced at her. All his previous visits were superior and their followers, so he never received such treatment. But today, his status was elevated to that of a guest.
"My luck won’t be ruined for having a Tribunal Lord serving me tea, right?" he asked as he took one sip. The taste was interesting: mellow, soothing, and calming the mind. The best description Wang Wei could give is that this tea perfectly complements a bookworm such as the duchess.
"Others might not be able to accept it, but I think you’ll be fine," the Duchess smiled.
"True."
The Erudite Duchess also took a sip and closed her eyes for a few seconds to savor the tea. "Disappointed in how they acted in that meeting?" She sighed deeply. "But if you understood the environment we grew up in, it’s not surprising."
The oldest of these [Old Saints] have survived from the Essenge Age. During the Bi Clan Ancestor’s ascension, not only was the universe affected, but most of the Saints also died, leaving only a few of them. Then came the Soul Age. When Ji Dingxian tried to ascend, even more people died. Many people tried to stop him, and when he failed, Ji Dingxian took countless Saints with him to his death.
After that came the Qi Age. Unfortunately for the people who rose in this era, Grand Dao suddenly blocked the path forward to force everybody to switch from the Qi Path Paragon Path to the Emperor-Paragon Path. And even after switching paths, these cultivators realized the path forward was blocked, with little to no resources. The result was endless fighting and struggle, with everybody doing their best to reach higher realms while preventing others from doing the same. In such an environment, what kind of person can truly rise to the top? Only selfish and wicked ones.
"Disappointed?" Wang Wei replied. "Maybe, but I did learn something valuable."
"Oh?"
"Not everybody can be the Highest Sovereign," Wang Wei commented. Comparing the actions and magnanimity of the Highest Sovereign to the actions of these Tribunal Lords is the best learning experience. Wang Wei has always been on a path similar to the Highest Sovereign, and today, these people’s actions further reaffirmed how correct his path was.
"That’s an understatement. The fact that he has the word [Highest] in his title indicates he is the pinnacle of the Sovereign Dao Path."
"Are you saying the word [Highest] is an officially recognized title?"
"Yes."
"Have you met others?"
"I once saw a ruin left by a Grand Dao Saint called the [Highest Martial Artists]."
"I see," Wang Wei nodded. He was interested in acquiring such a title, so he kept an eye out for information on how to do so. However, there is a high chance that only Grand Dao Saints can do so, meaning he’ll have to wait a while.
"I wanted to talk to you to ask you about your thoughts," the Duchess said, shifting the conversation.
"Our future is bleak," Wang Wei said directly. "No one can trust each other, and more importantly, everybody is already scheming."
"What do you mean?"
"Don’t you find it odd that the Trinity Venerable has only now revealed that Array Plate? When Suiji was a major threat to our lives, he never said anything."
"It’s normal for people at our level to keep a hidden trump card or two."
"True, but there are other suspicions," Wang Wei added.
