Chapter 2162: Clean Up II (bonus Chapter)
Reynolds’s lightning spear pierced through the final opponent, while Void had already cut down the one who tried to flee after seeing the death of the last Ninth-stage Necromancer.
Reynolds was panting heavily as he dismissed his lightning armor. Blood stained his clothes, and several wounds marked his body. The most serious was a deep slash that ran from his torso around to his back. He glanced at the corpses of Liora and the last Ninth-stage Necromancer, then at Grey and Elder Voss.
He flew over with Void perched on his shoulder.
Seeing Grey’s haggard condition, he laughed, "Looks like those guys gave you a good beating."
"You don’t look any better," Grey retorted, nodding toward Reynolds’s obvious injuries and exhausted appearance.
"My case is understandable. I had to fight ten people. You only fought a mere three." Reynolds grinned.
Grey’s mouth twitched. "Three Ninth-stage Sovereigns," he corrected. He looked at Reynolds and added, "What I can’t understand is why you had Void with you, and even my help at a critical time, yet still failed to finish them in time."
"What nonsense help? I was about to one-shot them before you entered the range of my attack," Reynolds shot back. "If anything, I should be asking why it took you so long to kill just three people. I would have finished them faster if I were in your position."
Grey gave a small shrug and replied with a faint, evil smile. "Good thing the war is still going on."
Elder Voss watched the two young men bicker after such a brutal fight and felt slightly taken aback. Both were clearly injured, yet they still had the energy to argue instead of immediately focusing on recovery.
She shook her head. "You two stay here. I’ll go help the Mayor."
Grey immediately rose. "I can still fight."
Reynolds did not even open his eyes. After their short exchange he had already begun circulating his essence to recover. Only someone as abnormal as Grey would still be eager to continue after a battle like that.
Elder Voss was startled by Grey’s insistence. She had planned to refuse, but then she recalled the final attack he had used to kill the array master. The fact that this young man had single-handedly killed three Ninth-stage Sovereigns proved he was at least not weaker than her. In truth, she was not confident she could have done the same while facing all three at once. That alone placed Grey’s combat strength above her own.
Grey tilted his head upward, watching the continuous flashes of intense elemental light among the clouds. The battle between the four Peak Sovereigns had not paused for even a moment.
When Elder Voss still did not respond, he said, "We should go help them."
She finally nodded. The two of them rose through the large opening in the ceiling and into the night sky. The moment they cleared the ruined headquarters and entered the clouds, the full pressure of the Peak Sovereign battle washed over them. Two separate duels were raging across the clouds.
Reynolds had Void to watch over him as he recovered, so he wasn’t worried anyone would attack him and focused on his recovery. Void, on the other hand, was searching through the rubbles to secure their spoils of war. He was used to always taking the storage rings of their defeated enemies, and he didn’t plan to stop anytime soon. While searching for the enemies, he even found an injured Eighth stage Sovereign that was hidden under a shattered pillar, the Necromancer tried to pretend he was dead, but he couldn’t evade Void’s senses who eventually killed him.
....
The Peak Sovereigns’ battlefield.
The Mayor fought with heavy, controlled power. Earth and fire elemental energy collided against the corrosive darkness of his opponent. Elder Harrington matched his own Peak Sovereign foe with precise and relentless attacks, neither side able to gain a lasting advantage.
When the first Ninth-stage aura had disappeared earlier, both Peak Sovereign Necromancers had noticed. A flicker of surprise crossed their faces, but they quickly dismissed it as an unfortunate loss and continued fighting. When the second Ninth-stage aura vanished, their expressions grew darker.
The death of the third Ninth-stage Sovereign, followed soon after by the last one, finally caused a visible change.
The Peak Sovereign facing the Mayor felt a surge of irritation. His attacks grew sharper and more aggressive.
’Those fools. How did they all fall so quickly?’
He could not understand how four Ninth-stage Sovereigns, two Eighth-stage Sovereigns, and multiple weaker ones had lost to only two Ninth-stage humans and one Eighth-stage. It made no sense.
The Mayor, on the other hand, was pleasantly surprised by the successive deaths. He had been trying to finish his opponent quickly so he could return and assist Grey and the others. Now that the lower levels had been completely cleared, he could not help but recall Grey’s shamelessly confident words before the battle began.
On the other side, Elder Harrington and his opponent showed similar reactions. The Peak Sovereign Necromancer’s face filled with disbelief.
’Impossible. How could they all be dead already? And so soon?’
Elder Harrington was equally stunned, though for a different reason. He kept replaying Grey’s earlier boastful claims in his mind. He had written the young man off as an arrogant braggart. It seemed those words had not been empty after all.
Despite his shock, Elder Harrington did not waste the opening. The death of the last Necromancer had clearly distracted his opponent. A water snake formed and coiled tightly around the Necromancer’s leg.
The man tried to force it away with darkness elemental energy, but the water snake instantly turned to ice. Sharp spikes erupted from its body and pierced into his leg, leaving deep, bleeding wounds. He managed to shatter the ice snake and free himself, but the injury was already done.
He quickly increased the distance between himself and Elder Harrington, then glanced toward the other Peak Sovereign Necromancer. Their eyes met. Both men nodded at the same time.
In the next instant they turned into two streaks of light and shot off in opposite directions. There was nothing left to protect. With Grey Dawson and Elder Voss now free, staying any longer would only mean facing even worse odds.
