Chapter 3654: Panic and Calm
Somberskull reacted to the sword upon recognizing it, just as Alex had wanted him to. However, unlike how Alex had expected, the man had a completely different reaction.
He hadn’t recognized the sword as something he was there to witness being made. Instead, he recognized it for everything that came afterward.
Immediately, the man stood in a rush and jumped back from the couch, keeping a distance. Even in his old age, the situation got him moving nimbly. Once he was far enough away from the sword, a black miasma grew around the man’s palm, ready to strike out.
"What is this? Is this some sort of trap? What the hell are you doing with that sword?" the man asked, his calm state no longer there. He was like a wild animal now, trapped and desperate.
Alex then realized that the man had indeed recognized the sword, but only because Godslayer was far too infamous and the sword was thus just as infamous as him. The man was scared of Godslayer, which was why he had reacted that way.
His reaction told Alex that he was in no way the same person who had been there when the sword was made. If he had been, the reaction would have been completely different. Sighing just a little, Alex put away the sword.
"My apologies, senior. I thought you would react differently to the sword," Alex said in apology.
However, the man didn’t let down his guard just yet. In fact, he was convinced that Alex was trying to lure him into letting his guard down. As such, he grew even more tense, to the point where the aura in his palm began to pulse as if ready to strike out.
Alex noticed it as well.
"Um... senior. I’ve put the sword away. It’s fine."
However, Somberskull did not listen to Alex’s words in the slightest. Right now, it wasn’t Alex who was speaking to him at all. It was the sword. Godslayer. And nothing Godslayer said could be trusted in the slightest, as that was how people were corrupted by it.
Somberskull even began wondering if he had no path out of here with Godslayer present, other than to kill Alex immediately. In fact, he was even preparing for an attack.
Just before he used the attack, however, he saw something else, and his entire being froze in that moment.
Bladedance put up her veil, exaggerating a sigh, as she revealed her existence. "Calm down. You are fine."
Somberskull stared at her for a full 10 seconds before slowly lowering his arm. He blinked once, and then twice more, making sure he wasn’t seeing things. Then, the black miasma around his arm fully faded away.
"Your Majesty?" he called out slowly, disbelief clear in his eyes. "You’re alive?"
Bladedance slumped back with an annoyed look on her face. "So much for keeping myself hidden," she said, before looking back at the old man. "Sit. You’re in no danger. It’s just Godslayer’s sword. His soul isn’t present here."
The man took a moment to nod. When things did feel as though they were calming down again, he moved back to the couch and sat down. And then he stared before him at the sources of his unthinkable surprises.
The young man, who the Storm God was after, held the sword that was Godslayer’s body.
And the woman who he had ignored this whole time had been none other than the previous Sword God. She was supposed to have died a long time ago, which was why there had been another Sword God. And yet, she sat right before him, her Celestial realm aura now apparent for him to sense.
He rubbed his forehead as he stared at the two, unable to make sense of the situation. "Can you please help me understand what is going on right now?" he asked. "Is something wrong? Have I done something?"
Bladedance shook her head. "We thought you did, but after the conversation earlier, we are more or less sure you are not the one we are looking for."
The man gulped slowly, worried about what would have happened if it had turned out that he was who they were looking for. The fact that the previous Sword God had come to visit him personally was quite scary after all. She had remained hidden for the longest time, so her dropping in unannounced was worrying.
"Who exactly is it that you’re looking for?" the man asked, his curiosity getting the better of him.
"A Death Sage like you," Bladedance answered. "We don’t know their name or face, just that they were a Death Sage and worked with the Death God. They should have also been there when the Death God worked with the Sword God."
Somberskull narrowed his eyes, thinking. "There were a lot of us back then."
"We know. We’re trying to narrow down exactly who it could be," Bladedance said.
"We would be grateful if you could help us here, senior," Alex added.
The man sighed internally, seeing no reason to deny them help. "I would be honored to be of assistance to Her Majesty, but I don’t know if I can be of much help."
"We don’t need you to find us the person. Just any progress you help us make is fine," she said. "For now, do you know if any one of Deathgrim, Deadcall, or Pallideyes may have been involved in the creation of Godslayer?"
The man’s eyes immediately focused as he realized what they were talking about.
"The creation of Godslayer? Was one of these Death Sages involved?"
He could hardly believe it at all.
"We know for a fact a Death Sage had been present during the creation of the sword. We merely need to figure out who it was," Bladedance said.
The man nodded slowly, thinking to himself as he tried to remember. But sadly, he knew absolutely nothing at all.
"I don’t really know much about the situation to give any answer," he said. "But may I ask something?"
Alex and Bladedance waited for him to speak.
"Why do you only have four names, when there were so many of us Death Sages in the past?"
