Chapter 3677: The Trials
The empty room expanded the moment Alex accepted the tower’s offer. It turned into an expansive grassland, plain and wide. There was not the slightest hint of incline in any direction, not a single tiny hill.
Far in the distance, something red glowed bright among the patches.
The voice of the tower came just then.
"This is your first trial. Reach the red mark as quickly as you can. Your time begins now."
Alex spent a fraction of a second thinking through all his options and took the one that made the most sense. He teleported.
The next moment, he was atop the red mark.
The moment he stepped on the red mark, the grass beneath his feet vanished as a wave of white consumed everything with him at its center, slowly turning the room back into its empty version.
"Congratulations. You have successfully completed your first trial. You have received your reward. Would you like to continue?" the voice asked.
Alex waited for something to appear, but nothing did.
"Where is my reward?" he asked.
"You have received your reward. Would you like to continue?" the tower asked again.
Alex frowned slightly but ignored whatever was happening. "Yes. I will continue."
The moment he said so, the world changed again. It expanded into a desert this time, with tall cliffs surrounding him in all directions, as though he was in some sort of canyon.
"This is your second trial. Please defend yourself from these attacks."
Something came whistling toward him the moment the voice finished speaking. Alex turned, finding a golden arrow that had been shot toward him. He quickly stepped back and watched as the arrow exploded the ground where he stood earlier.
The very next moment, something else came at him.
The speed of these attacks was quite quick, even from the perspective of an Immortal. However, anyone who was above the Immortal Ascendant realm would have no issue dodging this.
Ronron was no doubt able to dodge these attacks, but he worried about his mother. She had incredible talents, but her experience wasn’t all that much. Could she dodge these by any chance?
’She’ll be fine,’ he told himself, dodging another one of the arrows.
For the entire next minute, Alex dodged the golden arrows, many of which came from directions that didn’t even make sense. But he managed to complete the task easily.
"Congratulations. You have successfully completed your second trial. You have received your reward. Would you like to continue?" the voice asked.
"But I really haven’t received anything," Alex said in a grumble before raising his voice again. "Yes, I will continue."
A massive bonfire blossomed out of nowhere, consuming everything in Alex’s sight. From his senses, he realized that he was in a forest, with the fire consuming the entire region.
"This is your third trial. Put out the flames as quickly as you can."
The moment Alex heard about the purpose of this trial, he immediately acted. With his True Fire Dao, extinguishing fire became incredibly easy for him, as it was something he could do with just a thought.
The entire forest being lit on fire took some time to go through, but it didn’t take nearly that long at all. He was done in a matter of minutes.
’I could have done that faster, couldn’t I?’ he thought. It was hard to know what he could and couldn’t do inside this trial since he was certain none of this was true. Whatever the artifact was doing, it was surely only messing with his mind.
The voice spoke again, announcing his success, and the fact that he had gained a reward. But obviously, he hadn’t gained anything. Alex wondered if his actual body had gained something during this time.
’Strangely enough, this tower feels a lot like the Playground. Although, the Playground was made for Saints, while this is clearly meant for Immortals,’ Alex thought.
Could this artifact have been made by the Godkiller too?
Alex continued, heading into the next trial, which was a trial of cultivation speed. He merely cultivated for a minute or so before the tower declared his success. He wasn’t even sure exactly what was tested, but whatever it was, he had done it.
Next was a test of strength.
Alex’s physical strength wasn’t copied in this illusory self of his, but his strength via his Qi was still present, which was enough for this trial, where it had him punch a rock wall repeatedly.
After that came a test of mental fortitude.
Alex had to sit down for this test and withstand the slow incremental mental pain that was put upon him by the tower. So long as he could survive for a certain number of minutes, he would pass.
By the time the test had come to an end, what Alex had experienced was something he would barely describe as an annoying headache. As such, he passed through that trial as well.
The next trial had him flee from someone. A silhouette of a cultivator that Alex thought looked vaguely like the Storm God chased him relentlessly, and Alex had to get away from this being.
He was not allowed to retaliate against this being, and with nowhere to hide in the grassland that he was given as the setting of this trial, he could only fly as fast as he could. His pursuer was rather quick as well, so Alex had to occasionally teleport to get away from the man.
By the time the test came to an end, his pursuer had never come close to reaching him at all. As such, he had easily completed the trial as well.
"Congratulations. You have successfully completed your 7th trial. You have received your reward. Would you like to continue?"
The world had gone back to its empty white.
Suddenly, in the empty room appeared the same silhouette from before that vaguely looked like the Storm God.
"Yes," Alex answered, barely tired after running around for so long.
"This is your 8th trial. Please defeat your enemy."
A hint of a smile formed on Alex’s face.
"I’m going to enjoy this."
