Chapter 2903: Treason? We Just Want To Survive!

Date: Unspecified

Time: Unspecified

Location: Myriad Realms, Card World, Western Region, Berg District, Scarlet Berg

"Guard Captain, could you spare a few of your men to assist us?" the City Lord asked desperately despite already seeing the indifferent attitude of the palace guards. At this point, he no longer cared about pride, dignity, or political standing. He simply wanted enough strength left behind to ensure Scarlet Berg survived the night.

In his mind, apprehending a group of high school students should not require the entire elite squad anyway. As for the kid from the Cervos Family controlling the corpse dragons, the City Lord believed even a single member of the Western Palace Guards should be more than enough to suppress him.

The captain paused briefly before glancing at the City Lord with an unreadable expression. The City Lord’s heart tightened under that silent gaze.

"No. I can’t spare any of my guards," the captain replied without hesitation. "The moment we capture the kids from the Bright Lions Security Agency, we’ll leave immediately."

With that, the squad of Western Palace Guards followed their captain toward the Guild Association Mall at the center of the city, moving swiftly through the air without even waiting for a response.

They left behind the stunned City Lord, the heads of the six major families, and the gathered demigods standing there in silence.

The expressions on their faces turned extremely ugly.

The palace guard captain had essentially ordered them to hold back Saintess Catherine and Redfall while the palace guards abducted the people they had clearly come to protect.

It was no different from asking them to bear the wrath of the lioness as they stole her cubs.

Realizing that it was certain that Scarlet Berg would pay the price, they felt genuine despair creeping into his heart.

"Fuck! They’re leaving us with no way out. We’re damned if we do, and damned if we don’t," Patriarch Bale shouted in frustration, no longer bothering to hide his anger.

The other family heads remained silent, but their grim expressions showed they felt the same. If they opposed the Western Palace Guards, they would be branded traitors by the Royal Palace. But if they obeyed and helped them capture the Bright Lions Security Agency, then Saintess Catherine and Redfall would likely destroy Scarlet Berg out of rage.

Either choice would result in the destruction of the city.

Meanwhile, the City Lord stood there with a pale face, guilt and self-blame filling his heart.

"I shouldn’t have contacted the Western Royal Palace for reinforcements before personally approaching them," he muttered bitterly. "I invited this disaster upon us."

At the time, he had believed calling for help was the safest option. Yet now the arrival of the palace guards had only pushed Scarlet Berg into an even more dangerous situation.

Looking at everyone sinking into despair, Matriarch Ali finally stepped forward and became the lone voice of reason among them.

"Maybe it’s still not too late," she said calmly despite the tense atmosphere. "Let me approach them first."

"T-That would be treason!" Patriarch Bale exclaimed, staring at Matriarch Ali as though he had just read her thoughts aloud.

But honestly, under the current circumstances, what she intended to do had already crossed everyone’s mind. The difference was that while the others only dared to think about it in silence, Matriarch Ali was actually prepared to act on it.

"Treason?" Matriarch Ali replied coldly. "They left us with no other choice. It’s either death... or this."

Her sharp gaze swept across the others.

"If you want to stay here and die for the Royal Palace, I won’t stop you. But I want to live."

The moment she finished speaking, she immediately turned and hurried out of the city barrier without waiting for anyone’s response. There was simply no time left to stand around arguing while the palace guards moved closer to the Guild Association Mall.

The others hesitated briefly as they watched her leave.

Then Patriarch Bale suddenly cursed under his breath before dragging the other family heads and even the City Lord along with him.

"If we’re going to do this," he growled bitterly, "then let’s at least do it properly."

One after another, the leaders of Scarlet Berg stepped beyond the protection of the city barrier and followed Matriarch Ali toward Saintess Catherine and Redfall.

Behind them, countless city guards and card demigods watched with pale faces, fully aware that after this, there might no longer be any path back.

Around them, the pressure weighing over Scarlet Berg continued to grow heavier by the second. In the distance, Saintess Catherine and Redfall still stood silently outside the city patiently watching everything unfold.

While Matriarch Ali and the others hurried toward Saintess Catherine and Redfall, the captain of the Western Palace Guards and his squad arrived above the Guild Association Mall. Hidden within the clouds, they silently observed the massive structure below along with the two SSS-rank corpse dragons resting atop it.

The dragons appeared motionless at first, their enormous withered and mummified bodies sprawled across the ruined rooftop like dead mountains. Dark mist drifted from their flesh while faint deathly flames flickered within the small hollow gaps of their ribs and eye sockets.

But the moment the palace guards’ gazes landed on them, the two corpse dragons abruptly opened their eyes.

Their pale, corpse-like pupils locked directly onto the hidden squad within the clouds above, as though they had sensed their presence from the very beginning.

A chilling silence filled the air for a brief second.

Then both corpse dragons slowly raised their heads and unleashed deafening roars toward the heavens.

ROOOAAARRR!!!

The captain of the Western Palace Guard squad ignored the roars of the corpse dragons as noise and instead cursed under his breath, "Those damned idiots gave us the wrong information."

His eyes narrowed as he quickly reassessed the situation below.

"Alright. Aurelia Malvin and Jaya Keith are our primary targets." He immediately began issuing orders with cold precision. "Vice Captain, you handle the corpse dragons. Guards Three and Four, go retrieve the targets. The rest of you, prepare the displacement battle formation. I want us back at the palace the moment we secure them."

"Roger that!!!"

The squad responded in unison without the slightest hesitation.
