Chapter 2655: Chapter 2655: Lose Three Years Of Her Life
"I think... I think I must have been kidnapped. When I woke up just now, I realised I did not have a single one of my belongings. My wallet, my ID card, my phone... everything is gone. Can you please help me? If it is not too much trouble, please just send me to the nearest police station." Chang Shuchun pleaded.
On the inside, Chang Shuchun was spiralling into a full-blown panic, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Yet, she fought desperately to maintain a veneer of calm on the outside. She had no one else to turn to in this godforsaken place. This elegant girl in front of her was her absolute last hope for survival. She remembered, through a haze of confusion, seeing Yu Qi appear almost out of thin air earlier, like a guardian appearing from the mist.
"Sure. Let’s get out of here. I will take you." Yu Qi nodded, her decision made.
Yu Qi had already firmly concluded that Chang Shuchun had been abducted by Master Chunwei specifically because of her unique spiritual resonance. As they both stepped out of the front door, the true nature of the property was revealed. Without its master, the house now appeared completely dilapidated and rundown. Yu Qi paused for a moment to observe the rot eating away at the wood. It was clear that Master Chunwei had been using his dark cultivation to maintain a glamorous, false illusion of the estate. Now that Master Chunwei had lost his life, the house had lost the magical tether that sustained its appearance, causing years of decay to manifest in an instant.
Chang Shuchun also stared at the decaying, skeletal structure of the house. The sight served as a grim confirmation of her terrifying thoughts. She had been a prisoner here, hidden away by a kidnapper who had now seemingly abandoned her in this wasteland.
They both climbed into Yu Qi’s sleek car, the smell of premium leather a sharp contrast to the stagnant air of the house. Yu Qi started the engine, the powerful roar echoing through the silence, and drove off, leaving the desolate, haunted area far behind them.
"What should I call you?" Chang Shuchun asked, breaking the silence and seeking the name of her saviour.
"I am Tang Yu Qi." Yu Qi introduced herself simply, her eyes fixed on the road ahead.
"Oh... I see... That is a lovely name. Thank you, Miss Tang. Truly." Chang Shuchun nodded, feeling a small weight lift off her shoulders.
Just then, the silence was interrupted by the trill of a phone. Yu Qi reached for her earpiece, tapped it, and answered the call with a professional tone.
"Yes... I am here... I have already submitted the research paper to the medical journal. It is currently in the hands of the editorial board for the review process. If the peers find nothing wrong with the data or the methodology, they will move to publish it in the next issue... Yes... Correct.... Understood. I will take care of the matter personally." After a few more minutes of technical discussion, Yu Qi ended the call.
"Miss Tang, may I ask you something?" Chang Shuchun asked, her voice small.
"Yeah... What is it?" Yu Qi asked back, glancing briefly at her passenger.
"Can you tell me what today’s date is? My head is so foggy, I have lost all track of time." Chang Shuchun asked, her hands gripping her knees.
"It is the 3rd of March, 2018." Yu Qi replied.
"What?!" Chang Shuchun gasped, her face draining of what little colour it had left. She looked as though she had been struck.
"Huh?" Yu Qi raised a delicate eyebrow in confusion, sensing the sudden spike in the woman’s heart rate.
She turned her head to look directly at Chang Shuchun’s shocked expression just as they drifted to a smooth stop at a red traffic light, the world outside continuing on as if no time had been lost at all.
"I have been... I have been gone for how long?" Chang Shuchun let out in a brittle whisper.
Her eyes were wide and frantic, darting around the car’s interior as if searching for a hidden clock. She simply could not bring herself to believe what she had heard moments earlier.
Beside her, Yu Qi remained entirely composed, keeping her hands steady and relaxed on the steering wheel. Even though she appeared calm, her mind was already calculating the timeline and everything Chang Shuchun must have endured during that mysterious gap.
"Based on your level of shock, I assume that date does not align with your memory at all. What was the date in your very last memory?" Yu Qi asked, genuinely curious about the answer.
"It was 2015." Chang Shuchun said, her voice trembling.
Suddenly, Chang Shuchun gasped sharply. Her breathing became shallow and erratic as the crushing weight of those missing years came crashing down on her all at once. She clutched her head tightly between her hands, as if trying to physically hold her memories in place.
"I remember now. It was October 2015. I was at the market, selling my things. That was when a man approached me about a custom ward for his home. I remember the autumn chill. I remember the distinct smell of roasted chestnuts lingering in the air. How can it possibly be 2018? Three years... Three whole years of my life are just... gone?" Chang Shuchun spoke in utter disbelief.
Yu Qi watched the traffic light turn green. She drove the car a significant distance in silence before finally pulling over to the gravel shoulder of the road to give the woman her full attention.
