Gu Yang shared Feng Jue’s feelings. Ning Shen was both sickly and terrifyingly paranoid, his indifference to life and cold-bloodedness made him a figure of fear. His lack of moral boundaries was deeply troubling.

“But it must be tough on Ning Gui,” Gu Yang remarked. She could see that Ning Gui and Mrs. Ning lived in constant fear of Ning Shen.
