Gu Jiao had no idea that An Hun had been curious about Gu Changqing’s recovery. She simply assumed that An Hun hadn’t wanted to waste his time on Gu Changqing and had left him alone.

Long Yi lifted Gu Changqing and placed him on Black Wind King’s back.

Not long after, they encountered Ye Qing.

Unlike Gu Changqing, Ye Qing and his four men had indeed suffered, and rather serious ones at that.

Which was puzzling.

Why had An Hun beaten up Ye Qing but spared Gu Changqing?

Was it based on looks?

Gu Jiao returned to the Imperial Advisor’s Hall and summoned a carriage to transport Ye Qing and his men back.

Gu Chengfeng had been waiting anxiously at the Qilin Hall for her return. The moment he saw Gu Jiao arrive safely, the weight in his heart finally lifted.

Just as he was about to ask how she had managed to escape, his eyes caught sight of Long Yi standing behind her.

His expression changed dramatically. “What the hell? Why is Long Yi here?!”

Gu Jiao spread her hands. “I’d like to know that too.”

Unfortunately, Long Yi neither spoke nor wrote. He didn’t even communicate in any way.

Wait a minute. An Hun could talk, so Long Yi… He must have been able to as well, right?!

Did he really lose his memories? And since the Dragon Shadow Guards of the State of Zhao never spoke, he simply ended up this way?

Without a word, Long Yi began searching through the rooms one by one.

Gu Jiao knew that he was looking for Xiao Heng.

She still had no idea how Long Yi had arrived in the State of Yan.

If he had come alone, how had he found the right path? He couldn’t even remember who he was, so there was no way he would remember the way back to the State of Yan.

But if he hadn’t come alone, then who had brought him here?

So far, he had shown no signs of trying to meet up with anyone.

Gu Jiao’s instincts told her that Long Yi had not been sent by Princess Xinyang to protect her and Xiao Heng. However, no matter what his purpose in coming to the State of Yan was, he had not forgotten his young master.

Watching him tirelessly push open every door in search of Xiao Heng, Gu Jiao walked over, tugged at his sleeve, and said, “Ah Heng isn’t here. I’ll have Gu Chengfeng take you to him.”

Gu Chengfeng shuddered and pointed at himself. “Why me?”

Being alone with a powerhouse like Long Yi was terrifying, okay?

Clearing his throat, Gu Chengfeng asked, “Aren’t you going back to the Duke Estate?”

Gu Jiao replied, “I still have something to take care of.”

After tending to Long Yi’s injuries, she had Gu Chengfeng escort him and the unconscious Emperor onto a carriage bound for the Duke Estate.

Meanwhile, she went to the intensive care unit to check on Gu Changqing.

The physical endurance Gu Changqing had displayed earlier didn’t seem like that of someone who had only just regained consciousness tonight. He must have woken up much earlier, and had done something behind her back.

“If he’s been staying here, then there must be some clues in this room.”

Gu Jiao began rummaging through the bedside cabinet, the medicine cabinet, and even under the bed. And sure enough, she found something that didn’t belong in this hospital room.

She pulled out a small box hidden in the bedside cabinet, opened it, and found several strange bottles along with a few old, yellowed booklets with curled edges.

Flipping through them, Gu Jiao frowned. “Beginner’s Guide to Death Warriors, Secrets to a Successful Death Warrior, Become a Qualified Death Warrior in Ten Days, The Self-Cultivation of a Death Warrior… What kind of ridiculous nonsense is this?”

Just then, the Imperial Advisor stepped into the room.

Gu Jiao casually picked up one of the booklets, waved it slightly, and looked at him with an indifferent expression.

Caught in the act, the Imperial Advisor gave a light cough and said, “I can explain.”

Gu Jiao's gaze turned exceptionally dangerous as she said, “You’d better have a reasonable explanation.”

Otherwise, she didn’t care whether he was the Godfather or not; she would beat him up all the same!

——She absolutely refused to admit that she simply wanted to hit him!

At this moment, Gu Changqing was in a state of complete unconsciousness. The Imperial Advisor walked to the bedside, cast a complicated glance at him, let out a long sigh, and said, “This was his own decision.”

“You’d better explain it clearly.” Gu Jiao said indifferently.

The Imperial Advisor responded, “He took a direct hit from An Hun’s sword without any form of protection. His foundation has been destroyed, his dantian severely damaged, and countless meridians have been shattered... You are a physician. You should understand that at this point, he is essentially a cripple.”

Gu Jiao did not refute this point.

She had already realized how terrible his condition was when she performed surgery on Gu Changqing.

Otherwise, when the Imperial Advisor had asked her what she would do if Gu Changqing became crippled, she would not have answered, “I will take care of him,” but rather, “I will cure him.”

From a medical standpoint, Gu Changqing had no chance of recovery.

Gu Jiao asked, “So you turned him into a death warrior?”

The Imperial Advisor sighed helplessly. “I already told you, this was his own choice. I merely provided him with an option; it was up to him whether to accept it or not.”

Gu Jiao recalled the conversation that had taken place in this very intensive care unit.

She asked, “He was already awake at that time, wasn’t he? You deliberately asked me, right in front of him, what would I do if he wakes up and finds himself a cripple? You wanted him to hear my answer, to be moved by it, and to become even more determined not to be a burden to me.”

The Imperial Advisor opened his mouth but did not refute her words.

Gu Jiao’s icy gaze landed on the Imperial Advisor’s weathered face. “And yet, you still have the nerve to call it his own choice?”

The Imperial Advisor lifted his fist to his lips and coughed lightly. “Ahem. Fine, I admit I used some rather dishonorable methods. However—”

“You’d better not say it was for my sake.” Gu Jiao cut him off. “Or I will kill you right here and now.”

The Imperial Advisor looked at her with a complex expression, as if to say——just how bold are you? Did you really dare to kill the Imperial Advisor?

“…Forget it. It’s me who has spoiled you.” The Imperial Advisor muttered.

“What are you mumbling about?” Gu Jiao hadn’t caught his words.

The Imperial Advisor said solemnly, “I was saying that this was the only way for him to regain normalcy. It may not necessarily succeed, but at least it’s better than leaving him as a cripple. Given his pride, becoming crippled would be worse than death.”

Gu Jiao thought of the dream she once had in the State of Zhao, of that battle at the borderlands, where the remnants of the previous dynasty colluded with the State of Chen’s army to turn Gu Changqing into a disabled, crippled man, making his life a fate worse than death.

The Imperial Advisor continued, “So I told him that if he didn’t want to become a cripple, there was only one way—to use a special drug and become a death warrior. Death warriors are built from the ruins of their former selves. There have been similar precedents at the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, but the prerequisite is taking a poison that has no cure.”

Gu Jiao paused for a moment. “The same poison that Fifth Master Han was afflicted with?”

The Imperial Advisor nodded. “That’s right. That poison carries a one-in-ten-thousand survival rate. If he endures it, he will gain the qualifications to become a death warrior.”

Shi Tian and An Hun had also become death warriors after being poisoned by this very substance——

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
