Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
The thick fog dissipated, and the forest turned pitch black.
With a single command from the Ghost King, waves of ghost soldiers surged forward like a deathly tide, pressing toward the State of Jin’s army in the forest.
The Jin army wasn’t weak. On the contrary, they were known for their bravery and combat skill.
Historically, the State of Jin shared roots with the Turkic tribes. The strongest tribe seized imperial power, exiling the others who refused to submit, thus forming what became known as the Turkic people.
The Turkic people’s lack of recognition by the six states was partly due to the State of Jin.
The Jin people were inherently warlike. On a regular battlefield, five hundred of them could fight off three times their number. But now, ghostly occurrences had scared them out of their wits.
Branches rustled without wind, blood seeped from trees, bird corpses fell to the ground consumed by deathly energy... each sight was bone-chilling.
Had they truly stepped into the underworld?
Were these ghost soldiers vengeful spirits from the Gates of Hell?
The soldiers weren’t clad in pristine armor. Their gear was broken, rusted, covered in dried blood, worn and eerie.
This made them seem all the more like fallen warriors, doomed to roam after death.
Unable to fulfill their duty in life, they clung to it in death.
They refused the waters of the River of Forgetfulness, refused Meng Po’s soup, refused to cross the Bridge of Helplessness.
Each night, they repeated their dying obsession: kill the invaders. Kill them all!
“Ah——!”
One Jin soldier couldn’t take it anymore and collapsed to the ground.
Just then, the soft soil beneath him shifted. A skeletal hand burst out, clamping around his ankle with a crack.
The soldier was terrified beyond belief!
He rolled over, scrambling backward in panic. But before he could take a single step, more skeletal hands erupted from the ground, freezing him in place.
“The Gates of Hell are open... There really are ghosts—!”
Another soldier snapped under pressure.
Fear is contagious. Once one broke, the second followed, then the third, then the fourth... until the entire army's morale collapsed.
Scholars once said, speak not of monsters and spirits.
But they also said, above, the gods are watching.
They had invaded the State of Yan. Its restless dead would not let them go.
Fighting the living wasn’t terrifying; after all, the living could die.
But ghost soldiers were already dead, they couldn't die again.
The Jin army fell apart. Some cried, some fled. Less than a third held their ground, desperately trying to fight.
But against the sheer number of ghost soldiers, they stood no chance. Worse, their composure was only skin deep, as their spirits had long since crumbled.
Gu Jiao and little Black Impermanence sat beneath a large tree when a skeletal hand suddenly burst from the ground, grabbing Gu Jiao’s ankle.
Gu Jiao let out a quiet grunt and casually yanked the hand off.
The now one-handed skeleton: “…”
Was that polite?
“Hm, it really is a dead man's bone.” Gu Jiao inspected it, then with a crisp crack, she reattached it to the skeleton underground.
Skeleton: “…”
Fine, I’ll see myself out.
Min Hongyi watched his forces fall in droves, veins bulging with fury at his temple.
He had just surveyed the forest. There weren’t three thousand ghost soldiers. That man had exaggerated to demoralize the Jin army!
And these so-called skeletons——
Min Hongyi slashed down at a nearby skeletal hand emerging from the ground.
Bang!
The skeletal hand shattered into pieces!
A pained wail echoed from beneath the ground in response.
Listen to that. Do the dead feel pain?
They were clearly just the living pretending to be ghosts!
But even saying that didn’t calm the panicked soldiers.
At this point, the only solution was to kill the ghost army’s commander, the one giving orders from the palanquin, the Ghost King!
Once he beheaded the Ghost King, the illusion of three thousand ghost soldiers would fall apart on its own!
Little Black Impermanence was a clever little brat. Seeing Min Hongyi no longer paying attention to their side, he quietly crawled toward the Ghost King’s palanquin.
He had barely crawled a meter when Min Hongyi launched his attack on the Ghost King.
Little Black Impermanence froze, stayed down for three seconds, then quickly crawled back to hide behind Gu Jiao.
He would share in the Ghost King’s wealth, but not in his death.
The man had been watching Min Hongyi the entire time.
As Min Hongyi charged with his blade, the man curved his lips into a crooked smile, raised his arms, and with flowing sleeves fluttering in the dark, he rose into the air and vanished midair with a sudden retreat!
Min Hongyi was shocked!
His breath caught, and he nearly fell from midair as his internal force faltered.
What just happened?
A living person had disappeared right in front of him!
It wasn’t a matter of qinggong or speed. He had literally vanished!
Min Hongyi landed on the palanquin. The carriers had long since disappeared, but the palanquin remained upright thanks to wooden supports underneath.
He frowned coldly, glancing around warily, then shouted provocatively, “I don’t believe in ghosts! If you’ve got guts, come out and fight! If you can beat me, I’ll call you King of Ghost Mountain then!”
No one answered.
Damn Ghost King, didn’t fall for the provocation!
Min Hongyi’s gaze shifted and spotted Gu Jiao about to leave with little Black Impermanence.
Gripping his broadsword tightly, his eyes turned fierce. “So you’re in on it too? Then killing you first works just the same!”
With that, he leapt toward Gu Jiao in a deadly slash!
Gu Jiao twitched her ears, sidestepped swiftly, shoved Little Black behind her with a backward sweep of her hand, then raised her leg and kicked fiercely at Min Hongyi’s lower body!
Min Hongyi sprang into the air to dodge the strike.
His sword strikes came fast. No sooner had one ended than the next came slashing at Gu Jiao!
Damn it, I have no weapon!
Gu Jiao was forced to retreat again and again.
“Big brother! Catch!”
Little Black Impermanence somehow produced a longsword and tossed it to Gu Jiao.
She caught it, blocked a strike, and said, “I don’t know how to use a sword!”
“Oh! Then this!”
He tossed her a broadsword next.
Gu Jiao: “Still don’t!”
A meteor hammer!
A spiked mace!
A dog-beating staff!
“Big brother, this one!”
Gu Jiao caught the final weapon midair, spun it once over her head, and slammed it down, striking Min Hongyi’s broadsword hard into the dusty ground!
The sudden force caught Min Hongyi off guard!
His forearm went slightly numb.
This youth clearly had no internal force, yet her spear technique was fierce and terrifying…
It reminded Min Hongyi of the Xuanyuan Family’s spear technique!
Wait a minute. The Xuanyuan Family’s… spear technique?!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
