Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

The man’s entire body stiffened in an instant.

The very next second, he resumed walking forward with an air of calm composure, as if nothing had happened. “You’ve mistaken me for someone else.”

Gu Jiao turned around, her gaze fixed on his back, which didn’t pause for even a second.

“Your mother is here.” She said evenly.

The man didn’t break stride. He kept walking in long, steady steps, striding into the darkness of the night.

Gu Jiao continued, her voice unhurried, “Your mother really is here. The Crown Princess is leading the expedition on behalf of His Majesty. The imperial army has already stationed itself in Quyang City. If she finds out you’ve abandoned your post outside Shengdu and run off to the border to play the bandit, she’s going to whip you!”

The man clenched his fists tightly, but still didn’t slow down, pushing forward as before.

Gu Jiao added casually, “Ye Qing from the Imperial Advisor’s Hall is here too.”

At last, the man couldn’t hold it in anymore.

His restrained emotions exploded all at once. He spun around and roared, utterly ruffled, “Aaaah! How did you recognize me?!”

Gu Jiao blinked innocently. “I didn’t. It was just a bluff to test your reaction.”

Shangguan Qing: “…??”

Gu Jiao shrugged. “Okay fine, maybe I did just a little bit.”

The way you made your entrance was identical to your father’s, exactly the same swagger.

And those three thousand ghost soldiers following you?

Did you know your old man also commands an army of three thousand Ghost-Faced Army?

With logic like that, are you really going to tell me you’re not his biological son?

There was also the strange feeling Gu Jiao got after entering the forest, and how she and Tang Yueshan mysteriously got separated.

There had to be some kind of formation concealed in the woods.

A formation technique straight out of the classic Qimen Dunjia. It strongly resembled a signature move of someone from the Imperial Advisor’s Hall.

And more importantly——

“Here, this.” Gu Jiao lifted her hand and opened her palm, revealing a command token belonging to the imperial family of Great Yan.

Shangguan Qing looked at the token, then at his own now-empty pouch. In the blink of an eye, he flared up again. “When did you steal my token? I saved you out of kindness, and you had the audacity to pickpocket me? You’re so heartless!”

Gu Jiao pouted. “You just looked like someone easy to rob… I couldn’t help myself.”

Shangguan Qing: “…!!”

Shangguan Qing decided it was time to teach this intruder a lesson.

The authority of the Ghost King was not to be challenged!

He spread his arms wide, and with a sudden tremor of his body, the leaves on all the tall trees nearby began to rustle without a breeze.

Tremble in fear, intruder!

Gu Jiao didn’t even lift her eyelids.

She glanced up, strolled over to a nearby tree, reached up casually, and tugged on a rope hanging from a branch.

“Oww——”

A little ghost hanging in the tree was yanked down with a thud.

Shangguan Qing wasn’t about to give up so easily.

He slapped his palm against the trunk of a massive tree behind him, and in the next moment, the tree began to bleed thickly and grotesquely.

Gu Jiao let out a thoughtful hum, raised one index finger, and poked it directly into a knothole in the tree.

The blood that had just begun to flow whimpered as if in defeat, and promptly stopped…

Shangguan Qing was so furious he was trembling all over. “Looks like you’re really pushing me to use my ultimate move!”

“You mean this one?” Gu Jiao bent down and reached into the bushes, pulling out a skeletal, bone-white ghost claw, with a bewildered little ghost still dangling beneath it.

The little ghost fiddled with some hidden mechanism, and the ghost claw twitched twice, scratching at the air with a clack, clack.

Silence blanketed the scene like a thick fog.

Realizing things were going south, the little ghost abandoned its prop…or rather, its ghost claw, without hesitation, and fled the scene in shame!

Gu Jiao considered for a moment, then generously returned the ghost claw to Shangguan Qing. “Here. Yours.”

Shangguan Qing: “…”

He gritted his teeth, snatched the ghost claw back, and flung it to the side in frustration. It happened to hit the little Black Impermanence, who had been eavesdropping nearby.

The little Black Impermanence clutched the ghost claw silently and scurried off without a word.

Shangguan Qing turned to Gu Jiao with a cold, unreadable expression. “Who exactly are you? Did that old man send you? Are you a newly accepted disciple of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall? I’ve never seen you before!”

So, it turns out you really are quite familiar with the Imperial Advisor’s Hall.

No wonder your techniques reek of that old man’s teachings. You almost look like some time-traveler half-breed.

By the way, I’m your sister-in-law.

Gu Jiao said calmly, “I’m the new commander of the Black Wind Cavalry. Surname Xiao.”

When Shangguan Qing heard that the new commander of the Black Wind Cavalry bore the surname Xiao, his expression didn’t show much complexity. From this, Gu Jiao surmised that he likely wasn’t aware of the truth yet, or perhaps, it simply hadn’t crossed his mind.

Whether Xiao Qing knew about his own origins or not, Shangguan Yan had never said. So Gu Jiao chose to assume he didn’t know. Naturally, she had no intention of overstepping her bounds and exposing the truth on her own.

Shangguan Qing glanced over Gu Jiao’s shoulder. “The Black Wind Cavalry is here too?”

Gu Jiao replied, “Not in Pucheng. They’re stationed in Quyang.”

Shangguan Qing responded with a simple, “Oh.”

Gu Jiao then asked, “Where did you find that firelance?”

Shangguan Qing rolled his eyes. “What, I’m not allowed to invent something myself?”

Gu Jiao eyed the weapon in his hand. “It’s already rusted through. Honestly, it probably predates you.”

Shangguan Qing replied with stubborn arrogance, “I don’t care. I invented it!”

To him, being the first to find it also counted as ‘inventing’ it. Rounding up was fair game!

“Oh?” Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow and glanced toward the people cleaning up the battlefield within the forest. “And those ghost soldiers and their armor, did you invent those too?”

Shangguan Qing said, “The armor was found on the back mountain.”

That matched Gu Jiao’s guess. This place must be where the Xuanyuan army had once fallen, which explained the abundance of broken Xuanyuan battle armor scattered around.

“As for the ghost soldiers…” Shangguan Qing began walking back along the path they had come, speaking as he walked, “Some were bandits from the border regions. I subdued them.”

Gu Jiao followed him, and only after walking quite a distance did she understand what he meant by “some”. Because clearly, there were more than just a few.

Behind the forest was a valley nestled at the base of three towering mountains. A small river meandered its way through the valley, and a modest wooden bridge connected the forest to a tiny village in the heart of the gorge.

The village was split in two. One side served as quarters for the ghost soldiers, the other for the civilian villagers.

It was evident that the village had been built recently; the thatched huts were all new.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
