“Is the baby coming soon?” Xiao Heng asked.

Princess Xinyang lowered her gaze to her own belly and sighed softly. “It should’ve come already, but it just refuses to come out.”

The due date calculated by the midwife had already passed by ten days. Every day, the physician would come to take her pulse, which still seemed fairly normal.

Xiao Heng more or less understood now why Grandaunt hadn’t brought up anything about his older brother to his mother. This pregnancy hadn’t been easy for her. If she had heard the news and rushed over to find Shangguan Qing, the jostling journey could have ended in tragedy for both mother and child.

The world always took a long time to process bad news, but people adapt to good news quickly and readily.

To Xiao Heng and Shangguan Qing, this soon-to-be little brother or sister was a new addition to the family. But to Princess Xinyang, it was the return of a son she had lost.

Knowing the two had much to talk about, Xiao Heng stood up and said to Yu Jin, “Aunt Yu Jin, there are still some belongings on the carriage.”

Yu Jin immediately understood and smiled as she replied, “Alright, I’ll have someone fetch them now.”

“I’ll go too.” Xiao Heng stepped out along with Yu Jin.

The door to the room was left open, and goose-feather-like snow was falling thick and fast. The entire courtyard had already turned into a field of white.

Princess Xinyang wasn’t used to being so physically close to men. But Shangguan Qing was her own flesh and blood, someone she wanted to be close to, even if it meant overcoming the barriers in her heart.

When Xiao Heng had been inside the room, she had restrained herself, not daring to show too much emotion. She didn’t want Xiao Heng to feel as if she was favoring one son over the other, that was the last thing she wished for.

In truth, her anxious love had made her irrational. Shangguan Qing had suffered so much; Xiao Heng felt it was only right that someone loved and cherished him.

Princess Xinyang looked at Shangguan Qing. After a moment’s hesitation, she said, “Can Mother sit here?”

She was referring to the seat Xiao Heng had just vacated, which was closer to Shangguan Qing.

“Ah, yes.” Shangguan Qing replied in a daze, then quickly looked at her cumbersome body and realized, “I should be the one to come sit over there!”

Princess Xinyang broke into a radiant smile.

Princess Xinyang was a beauty favored by time itself. The former Crown Princess had been dazzling and commanding in her beauty, but Xinyang resembled a pure lotus blooming on the snowy peaks of the Tianshan Mountains.

Graceful, composed, ethereal and elegant.

A sudden thought crossed Shangguan Qing’s mind. When the time came for him to find a wife, he wanted someone like his mother.

But then again, it seemed he might never have that chance.

Princess Xinyang gazed steadily at her son, as if she could never look at him enough.

She had so many things in her heart that she wanted to tell him, yet when the words reached her lips, she didn’t know how to begin.

In the end, it wasn’t just Shangguan Qing who was nervous.

Shangguan Qing was afraid that Princess Xinyang might not like the kind of son he was; and Princess Xinyang was equally afraid that he might not like a mother who had never raised him for a single day.

“You…” Princess Xinyang opened her mouth, searching for a topic. “By the way, why didn’t JiaoJiao come back with you all?”

Shangguan Qing replied, “There’s still fighting going on in the State of Jin, so she can’t come back just yet. But don’t worry, the most dangerous phase is over now. The imperial army has the upper hand, and she’ll be safe.”

Moreover, ever since the Gu Family Army arrived, that man named Gu Changqing hadn’t really let the little girl go to the front lines anymore.

She was mainly stationed in Quyang City, responsible for holding the rear and tending to the wounded.

Of course, that was no easy task either. After all, lives were at stake, and every single one of them was precious.

Princess Xinyang felt slightly more at ease. “Then, did you run into Long Yi?”

Shangguan Qing said, “I didn’t, but Ah Heng said he did. He said Long Yi left after escorting him from the border back to the heartland of the State of Yan.”

So Long Yi and Ah Heng must have met.

That made sense.

After so many years together, the one Long Yi was most reluctant to part with was probably Ah Heng.

Before he went off in search of his answers, he would have definitely said goodbye to Ah Heng.

But she had once thought that Long Yi’s answer would be found there, in the State of Yan.

Now, it seemed that wasn’t the case after all.

Shangguan Qing didn’t know much about Long Yi, only that he had been a dark guard by the princess’s side, had watched Xiao Heng grow up, and seemed to have an unusual background. Now, he had gone off to uncover his own past.

Princess Xinyang then asked, “You… are you married?”

This was a topic no parent in the world could avoid.

But wait, she had asked about everyone, so how come she didn’t ask about my father?

Shangguan Qing answered truthfully, “I’m not married.”

Princess Xinyang thought about how he had spent all these years poisoned, and figured he likely hadn’t had the heart or time to think about marriage. She didn’t press the matter and instead asked, “Has your poison been cured?”

That was the most important issue. Earlier, she had been so focused on seeing her son that she had completely forgotten about the key matter.

“It’s cured,.” Shangguan Qing replied with a smile.

Princess Xinyang asked in confusion, “When did it get cured? Didn’t the Imperial Advisor's Hall say it was beyond help?”

It had to be said that mothers had sharp instincts.

Shangguan Qing had already anticipated this question and recited his prepared explanation, “There’s this purple herb, and its roots can be refined into an extremely potent poison. Out of a hundred people, only one survives it. For someone like me, with no martial arts skills, the chances were even lower. But if you can survive it, then all previous wounds and toxins in your body will miraculously heal on their own, without medicine.”

Hearing how brutal this method was, Princess Xinyang’s heart tightened with worry.

“This purple herb is incredibly rare. Luckily, the Han Family in the borderlands of the State of Yan had cultivated a whole garden of it. After the court’s army took down the Han Family, their herb garden was confiscated as well. I thought I was going to die anyway, so why not give it a try? I nearly didn’t make it back alive to see you.”

As he spoke, he pitifully grabbed Princess Xinyang’s wrist. “The poison from the purple herb was no joke, those few days, I was in so much pain I thought I was going to die…”

The more details there were in a story, the more convincing it became.

Mixing truth with fiction, blurring reality and illusion, plus a little bit of playful acting, it really did make it sound believable.

The sudden closeness from her son left Princess Xinyang so overwhelmed with joy that her mind felt dazed.

“Did you ever think, what if your mother didn’t believe you? I’m not that easy to fool, you know, I’m quite clever.”

“I had my ways.”

It seemed his plan had worked.

His mother, immersed in the happiness of being reunited with her son, had let down her guard and lost her usual judgment and suspicion.

But in truth, even he couldn’t tell whether he was deliberately getting close to his mother to achieve a goal, or if deep down, he had truly wanted to be this close to her all along.

Princess Xinyang lifted her other hand and clasped her son’s hand tightly. The emotions she had just managed to calm down flared up again as she felt heartache over what he had endured.

“You’ve suffered.” Her voice choked as she said, “From now on, I won’t let you suffer again.”

“Mm.” Shangguan Qing nodded, and gently pressed his cheek against the back of her hand. “Mother really loves me most, way more than that annoying younger brother! That stinky brother of mine only knows how to make me mad!”

Tears sprang from Princess Xinyang’s eyes all at once.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
