Gu Xiaobao was carried out by Yu Ya’er.

Yu Ya’er muttered, “How can she be like this… giving her a kind reminder, and she takes it like a slap in the face… does she really think such good fortune just falls from the sky? Doesn’t she ever think about her own reputation; how could she possibly enter the gates of the Marquis Changping Estate? If not for Young Master Quan… oh, forget it, I shouldn’t say more.”

Grannie Fang said, “Her pride is high, she thinks she’s better than the eldest young miss in everything, and even wants her marriage to outshine the eldest young miss’s. How could she possibly think there’s anything wrong with this match? Madame has already been more than benevolent; if she insists on walking this road to ruin, let her.”

Yao shi took Gu Xiaobao onto her lap. Gu Xiaobao spread out his ten fingers, patted his own chest lightly, waved his little hand, and said seriously, “Xiaobao, not stupid.”

Those words… her son had heard them.

Yao shi’s heart ached. She closed her eyes briefly, then smiled at her son. “Of course Xiaobao isn’t stupid. Xiaobao is the smartest.”

She turned her head, her gaze resolute as she said, “From now on, don’t call her second young miss, and don’t report anything about her to me ever again.”

From this day forth, she had only one daughter, and Xiaobao and Yan’er had only one elder sister.

……

Meanwhile, Gu Jinyu stormed back to the Marquis Estate in anger.

As she passed the small garden, she overheard two old servant women sweeping as they whispered to each other.

“Ah, I heard in the Old Madame’s courtyard the other day about Young Master Quan, that Young Master Quan…”

The rest was spoken too softly for Gu Jinyu to catch, but she had an inexplicable feeling it was nothing good.

“Is that true or false?” the other old servant woman exclaimed in shock, her expression utterly drained of color. “If that’s the case, then if the second young miss marries over there, wouldn’t that mean——”

“What are you doing here!”

A voice filled with authority rang out from the other end of the path, and the two sweeping servant women’s faces changed at once as they quickly looked toward the source of the voice.

The newcomer was the current chief personal servant by the Old Madame’s side, surnamed Zhang.

Grannie Zhang glanced at Gu Jinyu, who was standing on the winding side path, then turned her gaze toward the two sweeping servant women and barked sharply, “Have you finished your work? Standing around here idling and getting insolent; watch yourselves, or I’ll have you thrown out!”

The two hurriedly nodded and bowed. “We wouldn’t dare, we wouldn’t dare! We’ll never dare again!”

Grannie Zhang smiled and greeted Gu Jinyu with a curtsey. “Young miss.”

The people by the Old Madame’s side never called her “second young miss,” which made her feel like she was the only true young lady of the household. This feeling greatly pleased Gu Jinyu.

But when she thought about the conversation she had just overheard, and combined it with Yao shi’s warning, a faint unease began to well up in her heart. “Grannie Zhang, is there something about Third Young Master Quan that I don’t know?”

Grannie Zhang was startled. “Young miss, why would you say that? Did these two servant women just now start wagging their tongues with some nonsense?”

“I was only asking.” Gu Jinyu replied.

Grannie Zhang smiled. “What could they possibly know? Third Young Master Quan is the legitimate son of Marquis Changping. He is fine in appearance, upright in conduct, and apart from… having read himself into a bit of a fool, he’s far too softhearted, always taking in vagrant beggars with nowhere to go, which makes the Marchioness quite furious. There’s really nothing else. Ah, his ears are a little too soft! But having soft ears can be a good thing too; in the future, he’ll listen to you in everything, and won’t that make your days in the Marquis Estate all the easier?”

Gu Jinyu asked, “Why was I never told this before?”

Grannie Zhang waved her hand with a smile. “It’s nothing of consequence, and besides, we were worried you might turn your nose up at him for being a bookworm. You’ve been watched over and raised by the Old Madame, could the Old Madame possibly mean you harm?”

Gu Jinyu said apologetically, “How could that be? Third Young Master Quan’s diligence and ambition are my good fortune. I’m sorry, Grannie Zhang, I shouldn’t have doubted Grandmother’s painstaking care.”

Grannie Zhang clasped her hand and smiled kindly. “It’s enough that you understand.”

Gu Jinyu gave a slight smile. “Then, I’ll return to my courtyard now.”

“Go on.” Grannie Zhang released her hand and watched her leave with a smile.

It was only when she disappeared at the end of the small path that Grannie Zhang’s smile stiffened.

Old Madame might once have cared for you, but the ones she truly cherishes most are her three grandsons.

So long as it paves the way for her blood grandsons, how could Old Madame ever care about the life or death of a foster granddaughter?

……

After sitting on Yao shi’s lap for a short while, Gu Xiaobao began glancing about in all directions, his little head turning this way, as if he were searching for something in particular.

Seemingly not finding what he wanted, he slid down from Yao shi’s lap in a slippery little motion, lying forward as he wriggled down to the floor.

“Xiaobao is willing to walk now?” Yu Ya’er asked in surprise.

“He already walked yesterday. He even went running off all on his own to open the door for his elder sister.” Yao shi replied, her mood lifting considerably at the mention of the two children.

Gu Xiaobao toddled with unsteady, waddling steps toward the east room, pushing open the door that had been left ajar by the wind, and peered eagerly inside.

Yao shi followed behind him.

He turned around, shook his pair of small hands at her with great seriousness, and declared, “Not here.”

“What’s not here?” Yao shi asked with a smile.

Gu Xiaobao said nothing.

He then went out into the courtyard to search, and when he found nothing there either, he went to the main gate just as he had the previous evening, clambering over the tall threshold on all fours before standing up and looking both ways down the alley.

Yao shi stood watching him with an amused smile.

He turned back again, shook his little hands once more, and repeated, “Not here.”

Grannie Fang and Yu Ya’er were also amused into laughter by his antics.

Yu Ya’er teased, “Weren’t you the one who didn’t want your elder sister yesterday? Why are you looking for her now?”

When Gu Xiaobao had gone to sleep, Gu Jiao had still been at home, but upon waking, she was gone, leaving the little boy utterly bewildered.

Although Yao shi knew her daughter was not in the house, she still allowed Gu Xiaobao to search every nook and cranny, inside and out… and in the process, he had probably walked the equivalent of two months’ worth of his usual exercise in a single day.

Looking at the way his little head was covered in sweat, Yao shi’s heart softened at last, and she asked him, “Do you want your elder sister?”

Gu Xiaobao nodded and nodded.

……

Old Marquis and Gu Changqing had not intervened in Gu Jinyu’s marriage matters.

Gu Changqing had left the capital three days earlier than Gu Jiao, at a time when Marquis Gu had just withdrawn from arranging Gu Jinyu’s betrothal to An Junwang.

As for Old Marquis, he had, the previous eighth month, gone to Chishui Pass by imperial command; at that time, Marquis Changping had yet to return to the capital to resume his post. When Old Marquis returned from the State of Yan this month, Old Madame Gu was already in the midst of preparing Gu Jinyu’s marriage.

Grandfather and grandson had said nothing on the matter.

Steward Zheng led Gu Jiao and the two of them to the reception hall, and then sent someone to invite Duke An over.

These past days of travel by carriage had been exhausting, and since Duke An was no military man, the fatigue showed between his brows; yet the moment he saw Gu Jiao, his spirits immediately brightened.

“Adoptive father.” Gu Jiao stepped forward to greet him, “How are you feeling? Are you finding it comfortable living at the residence?”

“Quite comfortable.” Duke An replied with a smile.

“Duke An.” Old Marquis and Gu Changqing also cupped their hands in greeting.

As Duke An was seated in a wheelchair and could not rise to greet them, he returned the salute from where he sat.

While they had been in the State of Yan, grandfather and grandson had stayed at the Duke An Estate, and today, even if the Emperor hadn’t summoned them, they would have taken the initiative to come and pay him a visit.

“General Xuanyuan isn’t here.” Gu Changqing remarked.

Duke An smiled faintly. “He’s in good spirits and Liao Chen took him around the capital for a stroll. He said he wanted to see the place where you and Jing Kong live.”

Gu Jiao nodded.

Duke An invited the three to sit, and Gu Jiao took the seat beside him.

Looking across at the Old Marquis and Gu Changqing, Duke An asked, “Ah, by the way, His Majesty, the State of Zhao’s Emperor wasn’t angry, was he?”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
