“You should go urge Father. I am almost done here.” Gu Jinyu spoke while gazing at the peerless beauty reflected in the bronze mirror.

Chunliu hesitated for a moment, but in the end, she braced herself and confessed: “...Old Marquis and Lord Marquis have both left the estate. Shizi… shizi and the two young masters have also gone out.”

“What?” Gu Jinyu’s face changed drastically!

This time, Madame Sun reacted swiftly and halted her hands in time, avoiding another tug on Gu Jinyu’s hair.

“Where did they go?” Gu Jinyu asked coldly.

Lowering her head, Chunliu spoke in a voice softer than a mosquito’s hum, “The gatekeeper said Old Marquis and the others… have all gone to the Duke’s Estate.”

Gu Jinyu, furious, yanked off the phoenix coronet on her head and slammed it onto the dressing table with a loud smack!

Everyone in the room was so frightened they did not dare breathe too loudly.

Madame Sun suddenly regretted ever taking this commission. All her life she had enjoyed good fortune, having sent off so many brides, yet this was the very first time she had met with such a situation.

The sons of the household had all gone to attend the eldest young miss’s wedding, leaving the second young miss with not a shred of dignity.

It was not her place to interfere in another family’s affairs. All she could do was force a smile, pick up the phoenix coronet, and say to Gu Jinyu, “Don’t be angry. Today is your wedding day. You should be happy, soon you will be married into your husband’s family.”

At that time, there would be no need to concern herself much with her maiden family.

That last sentence she swallowed back.

“You are right. Once I am married, I will have nothing more to do with the Marquis Ding’an Estate.” Since Madame Sun had already witnessed enough of her humiliations, she might as well adopt a composed air to salvage a little dignity. “After the wedding, I will be leaving the capital with Third Young Master Quan, going with him to his fief. The Third Young Master is Marquis Changping’s most beloved son. I imagine my days will not be too difficult.”

Old Madame Gu’s trusted servant, Grannie Zhang, was still inside the room. For Gu Jinyu to speak in such a way in front of her made it clear she was intentionally venting her spite.

Grannie Zhang merely smiled and said nothing.

“Madame Sun, am I beautiful?” Gu Jinyu gazed at her reflection in the bronze mirror.

Madame Sun replied, “Beautiful, of course you are beautiful.”

Gu Jinyu added, “Compared to my elder sister?”

Madam Sun froze.

To be honest, she had seen that eldest young miss once. Last month, when she went to Miraculous Hands Hall to fetch medicine, she happened to overhear a servant calling someone “eldest young miss.” After inquiring, she realized that was none other than the Duke An’s adopted daughter spoken of in rumors.

The true-born daughter of the Marquis Ding’an Estate.

She shook her head with a faint smile and said sincerely, “second young miss, your beauty far surpasses that of the eldest young miss.”

Gu Jinyu touched her flawless face and said coolly, “No matter how much she curries favor with Grandfather and my brothers, in the end she is nothing more than an ugly wretch.”

This… was something Madame Sun could not agree with.

That eldest young miss’s face bore some imperfections, yet to call her ugly would not be accurate; rather, she carried a certain cool and detached air about her, one that was most unique.

……

At the Duke’s Estate, Gu Jiao had finished her preparations and was ready to depart.

According to the customs of the State of Zhao, Gu Yan and the others could block Xiao Heng at the bridal gate, but Xiao Heng had long since won over his future brothers-in-law.

Now the question before them was not whether to let the groom in, but rather who would be the one to carry the bride onto the bridal sedan.

Inside the reception hall, Gu Changqing and the others had launched into a fierce argument.

“I am the eldest brother, naturally I should be the one to carry her.” Gu Changqing said without hesitation.

To his surprise, his proposal was rejected by everyone else, Gu Yan included.

——Except Gu Chenglin.

In the past, Gu Yan would never have competed with him, but since it concerned their sister, Gu Yan joined in the contest without hesitation.

“I am her twin! We’re the closest! I should carry her!”

Gu Xiaoshun, normally the most laid-back and never one to fight, also refused to yield today, “I grew up alongside my big sis! Surely I should be the one to carry her into the sedan!”

Gu Changqing, Gu Chengfeng, and Gu Yan all snapped their heads toward him in unison, “Haven’t you already carried her once before?”

——Back in the countryside!

Gu Xiaoshun rubbed his nose. “N-no I haven’t…”

Gu Chenglin opened his mouth. “Well, actually…”

The other four in chorus, “Quiet!”

Gu Chenglin closed his mouth with a wounded expression.

Just as the brothers were quarreling heatedly, Gu Changqing suddenly sensed something was amiss. He glanced around and noticed that, of the seats in the hall, only Marquis Gu remained, sitting with a blank expression. The grandfather who was supposed to be waiting with him was nowhere to be seen.

“Where’s Grandfather?” He asked Gu Chenglin.

They had been so busy arguing that only Gu Chenglin hadn’t joined in.

“Grandfather went out.” Gu Chenglin replied. “I think he went toward that courtyard you were all talking about.”

Gu Chengfeng turned sharply toward him. “Why didn’t you say so earlier?”

Gu Chenglin pouted. “I wanted to, but you all told me to be quiet.”

Gu Changqing and Gu Chengfeng exchanged a glance, their hearts sinking. Grandfather had gone to carry their sister!

“How could we forget Grandfather is a sworn elder brother to that girl…” Gu Chengfeng ground his teeth. “That’s too much, Grandfather!”

Gu Changqing darted out the door!

“Hey! Wait for me!”

Gu Chengfeng rushed after him!

Gu Yan and Gu Xiaoshun quickly followed.

Gu Chenglin looked from them to his absent-minded father, then stretched his hand toward the door, “…Wait for me too!”

One tugging the other, each trying to shove the rest behind, the brothers scrambled to the bridal courtyard where Gu Jiao was waiting. But to their surprise, they caught sight of their grandfather’s back.

Eh?

Why hadn’t he gone inside?

“Grandfather, why are you just standing there in a daze?” Gu Chengfeng stepped forward, speaking as he followed his grandfather’s gaze toward the courtyard. Then he froze as well.

Upon the path laid with red silk, Duke An sat quietly in his wheelchair, facing Gu Jiao’s boudoir.

All around, the people were tense and watchful, Xuanyuan Qi and Liao Chen staring at him without blinking.

From outside the courtyard, no one could see his expression, but all of them could feel the tremendous effort surging through his body.

His hands gripped the arms of the wheelchair as he forced himself to rise, inch by inch.

It was clear how much strength it cost him. Even so, he did not immediately sink back down, but instead stubbornly took a step forward.

Then a second… a third…

When he tried to ascend the steps, he nearly fell, making Steward Zheng gasp in fright.

Xuanyuan Qi and Liao Chen both twitched their fingers, ready to rush forward.

He lifted a hand, signaling everyone that he was fine, that they need not come over.

After steadying himself, he took steps ten times harder than those of an ordinary man, slowly climbing the stairs.

When he appeared at the doorway of the bridal chamber, Yao shi was so shocked she couldn’t utter a word.

Beneath the bridal veil, Gu Jiao heard the halting yet resolute footsteps. She blinked, and then a long, slender hand reached toward her, “JiaoJiao, father will carry you to be wed.”

In the Xuanyuan family, it was customary for a father to carry his daughter to the bridal sedan. When Xuanyuan Zi had married Duke An, then still Jing shizi, it had been Xuanyuan Li who carried her.

And he had once promised Ah Zi that one day, he too would personally carry their daughter to her sedan chair, to hand her over to a man worthy of her lifelong trust.

Three years of being a living corpse had left him broken, and though he had clawed back some health, he was far from what a normal man could be.

His legs were weak and unsteady, barely enough to support himself, let alone the weight of another.

Yet though his steps were slow, each one was firm.

Alone, he could fall countless times. But with his daughter on his back, he could not stumble even once.

Gu Jiao lay against his thin back, clearly feeling every taut muscle straining, every trembling step of his legs.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
