At another table, the Gu Family members who had originally planned in the carriage to go and make mischief at the bridal chamber were all stopped by Shangguan Qing.
When it came to martial arts, Shangguan Qing was no match for Gu Changqing, Gu Chengfeng, Xuanyuan Qi, or Old Marquis. But when it came to drinking games, even if a hundred experts were added together, they would not be able to match even a finger of his.
With his own strength alone, he successfully drank an entire table of great men under the table.
Xuanyuan Qi and Old Marquis, along with the others, collapsed crookedly on the lawn; the bride’s family’s mighty army were completely annihilated!
Shangguan Qing sat on a stool, one foot propped on the corner of it, lazily tilted his head back, and took a casual sip of wine. “Being invincible is truly… truly lonely…”
From the treetop, Liao Chen let out an amused snort.
Shangguan Qing asked, “Monk, what are you laughing at?”
Liao Chen chuckled, “Did you forget? I’m not drunk yet. Whether that boy can even walk to the bridal chamber tonight is still uncertain.”
“Oh, really?” Shangguan Qing arched his brow and looked up at Liao Chen on the tree with a half-smile.
Liao Chen narrowed his eyes. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Shangguan Qing gave a mischievous grin. “Turn around.”
Liao Chen turned his head as he was told.
Bathed in the bright moonlight, Taoist Qingfeng stood tall in a dark-blue Taoist robe, his expression icy, his eyes filled with killing intent.
A jolt ran through Liao Chen’s scalp!
Taoist Qingfeng fixed his gaze on the man sitting on the treetop and enunciated each word clearly, “You said you would wait for me in Shengdu. You broke your word.”
If I did not break my word, should I wait to be hunted down by you instead?
Liao Chen clenched his fists and looked toward Shangguan Qing. “Did you bring him here?”
Shangguan Qing spread his hands innocently. “I don’t have that kind of ability.”
It was the bratty younger brother.
Even Shangguan Qing himself had been bribed by that brat’s new firelance, otherwise who would willingly drink on that stinky boy’s behalf?
Humph!
……
As night fell, Xiao Heng returned to the bridal chamber.
The dragon-and-phoenix wedding candles were already lit, casting a dreamy glow across the room decorated with red paper cutouts of the character for happiness.
Xiao Heng gently lifted her red veil with a jade ruyi.
A refined and dazzling face met his eyes, and he realized he had never known she could be so utterly enchanting.
It wasn’t that she wasn’t beautiful in her everyday appearance, but tonight, dressed in the phoenix coronet and red bridal robe, her radiance was at its absolute peak.
He stared at her, unable to look away.
Gu Jiao, too, sat dumbfounded as she gazed at him. He was always dressed in cool-toned garments, and she had never realized that in a bright red wedding robe, he could be this breathtaking.
He gave a soft smile. “Wife, let us drink the wedding wine.”
Gu Jiao was dazzled by his smile.
She hadn’t even drunk yet, and she already felt drunk.
Xiao Heng poured the wine, then thought of something and asked her, “Will you get drunk again?”
He remembered clearly that this girl’s tolerance never went past a single cup.
“No.” Gu Jiao said.
There was a hangover cure in her little medicine chest, and she had just taken it.
The two of them drank the wedding wine.
From the stage in the front courtyard came the singsong voices of opera, accompanied now and then by the lively cheers of the guests. Carried across the night sky, it made the already quiet courtyard seem even more tranquil.
Neither of them spoke, nor made any further move; they simply sat properly on the bed.
Xiao Heng pressed a hand over his thumping heart and asked her, “What… are you thinking about?”
Gu Jiao answered honestly, “I’m counting.”
Xiao Heng looked at her in puzzlement. “Why are you counting?”
Gu Jiao tapped her fingers as she counted, “The book says that a woman must be reserved, so I have to count to one hundred before I can eat you.”
Xiao Heng’s gaze deepened, his very breath nearly stalling.
“And what number are you at now?” He asked hoarsely.
Gu Jiao counted aloud, “Fifty-nine, sixty, sixty-one…”
He could not wait any longer.
Those remaining thirty-nine would surely take his life.
“JiaoJiao, you don’t need to count to a hundred, the book was lying.”
He raised his long, jade-like hand, gently cupped the back of her head, lowered his own, and sealed her soft lips with his.
The moonlight was tender, the night deepened endlessly.
The red wedding canopy was slowly drawn down, garments fell scattered to the floor in disarray, carrying a lingering fragrance.
On the tree branch outside, Little Nine covered its head with his wide wings.
So shameful.
……
The Little Marquis’s wedding kept the Marquis Estate lively all through the night. The opera troupe rotated through three shifts, singing until their throats nearly smoked, and only when a pale streak of dawn appeared on the horizon did the music finally end and the crowd disperse.
Little Yiyi was kept awake by all the noise, crying and fussing through the night, which in turn caused Princess Xinyang to sleep late.
When she opened her eyes, she found that the sky was already bright. Pressing at her aching brow, she said, “Why didn’t you wake me earlier?”
Yu Jin helped her up and said softly, “You slept too late last night. It’s still early now, why not rest a little longer?”
Princess Xinyang wearily waved her hand. “No, I mustn’t sleep anymore. Soon Ah Heng and JiaoJiao will come to serve the tea.”
On the morning after the wedding, the new bride must serve tea to her parents-in-law; only then would she be formally acknowledged by the family.
Although Princess Xinyang already recognized Gu Jiao in her heart, she was a woman who valued propriety, and rituals could not be dispensed with.
After washing and changing into a dignified gown, she sat before the dressing table.
Yu Jin came behind her to comb her hair.
Princess Xinyang said, “You didn’t sleep well either, did you? You don’t need to be on duty today, let Huaping come instead.”
Yu Jin smiled. “I slept just fine. After all, I wasn’t here last night.”
As soon as those words slipped out, her voice faltered. From the bronze mirror, she saw her princess’s expression turn unmistakably sour.
Yu Jin gave a light cough and said no more, silently combing Princess Xinyang’s hair.
Yet as she combed, her expression began to shift strangely.
Princess Xinyang caught sight of it in the mirror and asked curiously, “What sort of look is that on your face?”
Yu Jin’s eyes flickered. “I, it’s nothing.”
Princess Xinyang said, “There is.”
Yu Jin opened her mouth, bracing herself, and stammered, “Perhaps… perhaps next time, Your Highness should remind Lord Marquis to be more careful.”
“Careful about what?” Princess Xinyang had barely finished asking before, following the direction of Yu Jin’s gaze in the mirror, she looked to her own neck. A bright red mark was plainly visible there.
She drew in a sharp breath and finally understood the reason behind Yu Jin’s peculiar expression.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
