Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Princess Xinyang’s face darkened as she said, “Why have we stopped here?”
Yu Jin’s eyes flickered, and she forced an awkward smile. “The carriage, it broke down.”
The coachman chimed in on cue, “Ah, the wheel came loose! I need to fix it!”
Little Yiyi, snuggled in her mother’s arms, wailed, “Waaah!”
Princess Xinyang: “…”
She lifted her chin proudly, like a haughty peacock. “Don’t waste your time on such useless things. I will never go inside to catch an adulterer.”
She was, after all, a dignified imperial princess of a nation. How could she possibly lower her status by stepping foot into such a place of debauchery!
Besides, she and Xiao Ji were not truly husband and wife. They had agreed from the beginning that however he sought pleasure with women, she would never interfere.
She flicked the curtain aside and said coldly to the coachman, “Is it fixed yet? If not, you need not come to the Princess Mansion tomorrow for duty!”
The coachman trembled in fright and gave Yu Jin a helpless look.
This was as far as he could help.
Any further and he would lose his livelihood.
Little Yiyi’s lips quivered.
Princess Xinyang glared at her fiercely. “You too! No crying allowed!”
Her mother’s killing aura was overwhelming.
Little Yiyi shut her mouth, wronged but obedient.
Just as Princess Xinyang was about to lower the curtain and leave, her peripheral vision suddenly caught a suspicious, sneaky figure.
She had seen it before letting the curtain fall.
But human reactions weren’t that quick.
When she lifted the curtain once again, the figure was already gone.
Her heart felt uneasy, a sense that something was not simple.
“Hold Yiyi properly and wait in the carriage.” She instructed, handing Little Yiyi over to Yu Jin.
Yu Jin, unaware of what she had actually seen, thought she had caught sight of the Marquis and was going to catch him in the act. “Princess, don’t worry, I won’t disturb you!”
Princess Xinyang didn’t bother explaining. She bent down and stepped out of the carriage.
The person she had seen slipped first into an alley, used a long blade to pry open General Qian’s carriage, but found no one inside, then turned and entered Soft Fragrance Pavilion through the back door.
By then, Princess Xinyang was certain that the target was either Xiao Ji or General Qian. Most likely Xiao Ji. After all, he had a knack for drawing hatred, with enemies waiting within ten steps wherever he went.
She went after him.
Soft Fragrance Pavilion looked small from the front, but in truth the back courtyard had several small gardens.
Circling around a covered walkway into the second garden, she immediately saw a figure’s back before the rockery.
She recognized at once that it was Xiao Ji.
“Someone is trying to kill——”
Before the last word left her lips, Xiao Ji raised his hand and drove his blade straight into the assassin’s heart.
The assassin collapsed into a pool of blood without even having time to scream, dying with eyes wide open.
Princess Xinyang froze on the spot.
She had just spoken when Xiao Ji struck, too late to pull back, for he hadn’t wanted to be so bloody in front of her.
He shoved the assassin’s body into a crevice in the rockery, tossed the weapon inside as well, wiped his hands clean with a handkerchief, and only then turned to face Princess Xinyang, a careless smile curving his lips. “Qin Fengwen, you followed me all this way just to say that?”
Followed him all the way… he knew she was tailing him from the start
Princess Xinyang’s heart shook violently, but her face remained composed as she said calmly, “I wasn’t following you, just passing by! But you, knowing Yiyi was here looking for you, you still got into a carriage with someone else!”
Xiao Ji tilted his head at her, the corners of his handsome lips lifting slightly. “Qin Fengwen, are you jealous?”
Princess Xinyang shot him a fierce glare, too lazy to argue with him.
She turned on her heel to leave.
Just then, General Qian came from another garden, heading straight in their direction.
She absolutely could not let anyone discover her presence here. Not only would it lower her dignity, but by the next day, rumors of Princess Xinyang catching Xiao Ji at a brothel in the middle of the night would spread throughout the entire capital!
She, Qin Fengwen, could not afford to lose face like this!
She clenched her teeth and hurried toward the rockery, intending to hide behind it, but when she got close, she saw just how terrifying the bloodstains on the ground were.
Her feet refused to step over——
“Lord Marquis!”
General Qian greeted Xiao Ji with a smile.
Qin Fengwen shuddered all over.
Xiao Ji glanced at her, pulled her along, and shifted two steps to the side, pressing her against the clean half of the rockery where the blood had not splattered. The grass beneath their feet was also untouched.
He used his broad body to shield her, his arms braced on either side.
The two of them were far too close, practically face to face.
Their breaths mingled together, and unused to being in such intimacy with a man, Princess Xinyang felt her chest tighten. Her breathing instinctively grew hurried and difficult, her body trembling ever so slightly.
Xiao Ji took in her every reaction, frowned between his brows, and leaned back just a little, opening up some space between them.
“Eh? Lord Marquis, what are you doing here?” General Qian asked.
“Don’t come over!” Xiao Ji ordered.
Without turning his head, his eyes remained fixed unblinkingly on Qin Fengwen. “I have matters to attend to. You return to your room first.”
General Qian halted, puzzled why Marquis Xuanping would speak so. Stretching his neck, he tried to peek around.
Marquis Xuanping was tall and broad-shouldered; he could block a person, but he could not block the hem of Princess Xinyang’s dress fluttering in the night breeze.
General Qian smiled with a knowing air. “So Lord Marquis is here for a secret rendezvous with a beauty. Is it Miss Chenxiang? No wonder Lord Marquis agreed so readily tonight, it must be longing for a woman’s embrace.”
Princess Xinyang cast Xiao Ji a cold look.
Xiao Ji’s teeth ached. He wanted nothing more than to turn around and kick this man.
Oblivious that his life was dangling by a thread, General Qian went on courting death, “Since Miss Chenxiang is also here, why doesn’t Lord Marquis bring her upstairs for a while?”
“It’s not Chenxiang!” Xiao Ji ground out between his teeth.
“Oh? Then who is it?” General Qian asked curiously.
Xiao Ji met Qin Fengwen’s icy gaze, narrowed his eyes, then suddenly let out a hoarse laugh. “A new beauty, very shy, so she won’t be meeting any of you lords.”
That teasing tone made Qin Fengwen want to lift her knee and kick him——
Right in that place.
So that he could never again.
General Qian chuckled. “A shy girl in Soft Fragrance Pavilion? It’s nothing but a ploy to seduce men. Lord Marquis had only just come down, and she contrived to ‘bump into’ you. In my view, her methods are excellent.”
Listen to this, did these words even sound human?
No wonder he hadn’t been promoted for years!
Princess Xinyang wanted to sentence General Qian to death on the spot.
Xiao Ji, seeing her bristling in fury, couldn’t help but let the corners of his lips curve upward. “Her methods are indeed excellent.”
Princess Xinyang glared daggers at him.
Xiao Ji, rakish and unrestrained, smiled at her, but the words he spoke to General Qian carried not a shred of warmth. “Go upstairs.”
“Lord Marquis…”
“Military order!”
General Qian’s expression straightened. “Yes!”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
