Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Little Yiyi, for the very first time, encountered someone who tried to feed her those hard-as-stone candied hawthorn skewers. She did not even have a single tooth!

When Princess Xinyang and Yu Jin returned from the greenhouse to their quarters, they found Little Yiyi being held in the arms of a young man dressed in dark clothing, her tiny hands carefully clutching a glittering string of candied hawthorns, licking at them noisily.

The wet nurse stood stiffly at the side, so nervous she did not even dare to breathe too loudly.

She did not know who this young man was, and she was certain she could not possibly overpower him.

Yu Jin was stunned when she saw the sudden appearance of the youth, and cried out in surprise, “Chang Jing?”

……

“Lord Marquis! Lord Marquis!”

Inside the training hall of Marquis Xuanping Estate, Xiao Ji was overseeing Shangguan Qing’s horse stance drills when Steward Liu rushed over, his face filled with urgency.

“What is it?” Xiao Ji gave him a sidelong glance.

Steward Liu wiped the sweat from his forehead, panting as he broke into a smile. “Chang Jing has come back! He is over at the Princess Mansion!”

What he said was “come back,” not “come.”

In everyone’s heart, Chang Jing had long since been considered part of the Marquis Estate.

Shangguan Qing turned toward his father. Chang Jing, that young master in dark robes, that little expert?

Xiao Ji’s expression remained calm, yet his next words betrayed his eagerness. He told his son, “Continue practicing your stance on your own. There is still half an hour left today. You must not slack off. I am going to take a look. You keep an eye on him!”

“Yes, Lord Marquis!” Steward Liu responded quickly.

Xiao Ji turned and departed.

Within a second, Shangguan Qing abandoned his posture altogether and stood up at ease.

Steward Liu let out a helpless sigh. Wasn’t he just wasting his breath telling him to keep an eye on the young master? How could he possibly win against this little sesame dumpling?

Xiao Ji made his way to the Princess Mansion.

Just as he stepped into the courtyard, he belatedly realized something was off. Since Chang Jing had returned, he ought to have gone to the Marquis Estate first. Why had he gone to the Princess Mansion instead?

“Could it be that this boy still harbors feelings for Qin Fengwen?”

The truth was that Chang Jing had been drawn to the Princess Mansion by Little Yiyi’s cries, though his fondness for Princess Xinyang was certainly not false.

Princess Xinyang disliked Xiao Ji, but she did not dislike Chang Jing. Once, when Chang Jing was injured and passing by the residence on Zhuque Street, Princess Xinyang had spotted him, called him inside, and ordered her servants to bandage his wounds.

From then on, whenever he was injured, he would often “happen” to pass by there again. After being treated, he would occasionally even stay for a meal before returning to the Marquis Estate.

Xiao Ji knew nothing of this.

Chang Jing had no mother, only seven elder sisters. From Princess Xinyang, he felt the strength of a mother’s presence, and he was deeply fond of her.

When Xiao Ji entered the room, Little Yiyi had already had the candied hawthorns taken from her by her mother, her hands washed clean, and she was lying obediently in her cradle.

Chang Jing sat at the table eating plain noodles, wolfing them down with audible slurps, clearly famished.

But that was not the main point. The key detail was that several delicate side dishes were set in front of him, every single one of them to his taste.

There were only two possibilities: either he had requested them himself, or the Princess Mansion had prepared them for him.

If it was the first, then he did not regard himself as an outsider. If it was the second, then he truly was not an outsider, for the Princess’s household even knew his preferences by heart!

Xiao Ji suddenly felt his own place in the family being threatened.

“You two go on chatting, I still have something to do.” Princess Xinyang said when she saw him arrive, and she took Yu Jin with her back to the greenhouse to tend the newly purchased peonies.

The thunder had ceased, yet the sky was still heavy and dark, and rain seemed ready to fall at any moment.

Xiao Ji first glanced at his little daughter, who was playing happily by herself, then he sat down opposite Chang Jing.

After more than half a year apart, Chang Jing had grown taller, and the heroic spirit between his brows was striking. He had returned, but remained the same youth.

“You ran away from home again?” Xiao Ji asked casually, without much warmth.

Chang Jing swallowed the noodles in his mouth before replying, “No. Not this time.”

Xiao Ji studied him. He had never paid attention before, but today, upon closer observation, he realized that Chang Jing’s table manners while eating were not bad at all.

That could only mean Qin Fengwen had drilled him into proper conduct.

After finishing his noodles, Chang Jing even drank all of the broth, leaving the bowl spotless, then placed his chopsticks neatly across the top.

Xiao Ji’s feelings grew even more complicated.

“I came here to find you.” Chang Jing finally got to the point. “I thought you were dead, so I brought people out to collect your body.”

Xiao Ji nearly choked: Well, thank you very much.

Chang Jing continued, “After we reached the border of the State of Yan, we heard that you had made it back alive.”

Xiao Ji said coolly, “And then your father agreed to let you come all this way to look for me?”

Chang Jing replied, “No, he didn’t agree. I am not allowed to leave the Icefield.”

Xiao Ji looked at him in amusement. “Yet just now you claimed you hadn’t run away from home. So what exactly is this then?”

Chang Jing answered earnestly, “I told my father you were my future father-in-law, that you had promised me your daughter’s hand. He agreed to let me bring people to your house to formally propose marriage.”

“I don’t even have a daughter to give y——” Xiao Ji started to sneer, but midway his gaze snapped toward the cradle, where Little Yiyi was lying, playing gleefully with her tiny feet.

He shot up at once, snatching up the stool he had just been sitting on. “You dare set your sights on my daughter!”

Chang Jing instantly darted to the doorway, hastily explaining, “I didn’t know you really had a daughter! I just said it casually!”

Chang Jing had left the State of Zhao together with Xiao Ji. Neither of them had known Princess Xinyang was pregnant, and in these ancient times without modern communication, the joyous news of Princess Xinyang giving birth to a daughter would never have reached Hidden Night Island.

Chang Jing had simply come up with a powerful excuse to fool his father and seven elder sisters.

But Xiao Ji did not care. He was furious, absolutely furious!

Gripping the stool, he chased Chang Jing halfway across the estate.

After the span of two quarters of an hour, the two of them stood in the garden, both gasping for breath, keeping a distance of a dozen or so steps between them.

Xiao Ji’s old back injury flared up, and he could not chase anymore, while Chang Jing by now was battered and bruised, his face swollen and blue.

Xiao Ji glared at him with a wheezing breath, tossed the stool aside, and turned back to his study.

Chang Jing pouted in grievance and hobbled after him on unsteady legs.

Xiao Ji had hardly warmed his seat in the study before he got up again and returned to the Princess Mansion. Lifting Little Yiyi from the cradle, he declared with utmost seriousness, “You are only allowed to marry when you turn eighty years old. Do you hear me?”

Little Yiyi: “???”

At that very time, Xiao Heng had just gone to get his measurements taken. The court was preparing his official attire for the appointment as Junior Secretary, and only after all was in order would he formally enter court to receive the imperial investiture.

As soon as he returned home, he heard that Chang Jing had come back and that Marquis Xuanping had chased him around and beaten him up. By coincidence, Gu Jiao was free, so the two of them headed to the Marquis Estate together, where they happened to run into Marquis Xuanping, who was just returning from the Princess Mansion.

“Father.” Xiao Heng greeted him. “I heard Chang Jing has returned.”

Surely his father, who missed Chang Jing, must be very happy at this moment.

But who would have expected his father’s eyes and nose to both be twisted with fury, and for him to let out a cold snort, “Humph!”

Xiao Heng: And what kind of reaction is this supposed to be?

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
