Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Gu Changqing was a man who practiced martial arts, and his body temperature was higher than that of ordinary people. Adding to that, he had drunk quite a bit of wine during the banquet, so it was only natural that he felt stiflingly warm.

He did not think much of it at first. He merely pushed the quilt down a little and closed his eyes, waiting for sleep to come.

However, the heat grew unbearable. Even his thoughts began to blur, and without warning, a scene that should never have resurfaced flashed across his mind.

That was when she had swiftly withdrawn her jade-white foot behind the bed curtain.

The foot of a young maiden, fair, delicate, tender to the touch, and so soft that it looked as though the slightest breath could break it.

…What’s wrong with me? Why would I be thinking about such things?

Gu Changqing forcibly pulled his mind back to clarity.

Soon, he recalled the words she had almost spoken to him earlier, words that had been interrupted by Grannie Zhang’s sudden arrival.

Should he ask her about it?

Even on the battlefield, he had never been this hesitant.

Listening to her quiet breathing, he knew she was still awake. After a moment’s hesitation, he spoke, “Did you have something you wanted to ask me earlier?”

“Mm?”

Yuan Baolin turned her head in puzzlement, glancing toward the mat on the floor. “Oh, what was I about to tell you again? Once Grannie Zhang came in, I completely forgot.”

“Go to sleep then.” Gu Changqing said.

“You should rest early too.” Yuan Baolin replied.

“All right.” Gu Changqing answered softly and closed his eyes again.

After that, the room fell into silence once more.

On this night of the fourth month, there were no chirping cicadas, no croaking frogs, and no cold wind howling outside. The entire residence seemed to have sunk into deep slumber, so quiet that one could almost hear only the sound of one’s own breathing.

Of course, with Gu Changqing’s sharp hearing, he could also hear Yuan Baolin’s breathing.

His chest grew hotter and hotter, the stuffiness from before gradually turning into a burning heat that spread throughout his entire body.

He had drunk before, and he knew what it felt like to drink too much or even to be drunk, but this was nothing like that. Besides, his tolerance for alcohol was excellent. Though he had been toasted several times that evening, everything had still been within his limit. He should not be feeling this way.

Could it be… because he was sharing a room with a woman?

Since when had his self-control become so poor?

As the heir of the Marquis Estate, Old Madame Gu had long worried over this legitimate grandson. When Gu Changqing turned fifteen, Old Madame Gu had even sent girls into his quarters.

But Old Marquis, fearing his young grandson might ruin his health through excessive indulgence, had quickly driven all those servant girls away.

Years in the army had exposed Gu Changqing to plenty of bawdy jokes and more than a few women, yet he had never once lost composure like this.

Or perhaps… something was wrong with tonight’s wine?

No. That couldn’t be. Everyone had drunk from the same batch. He had even taken the sobering soup sent by his grandmother——

The sobering soup!

Gu Changqing clenched his fist. At last, realization dawned upon him.

His grandmother truly was——

Gu Changqing let out a frustrated sigh and turned his back toward the bed, hoping that at least facing away would help him block out Yuan Baolin’s presence.

He silently recited several Buddhist scriptures that Little Jing Kong had once taught him, and the burning heat within him finally began to subside a little.

But just then, he heard the bed creak. Yuan Baolin had turned over.

His ears, sharp as a seasoned warrior’s, caught everything: her turning over, the sound of her kicking away the quilt, the rustle as she shifted again and tugged at her clothes, and finally, the faint sound of her lifting the bed curtain and walking barefoot in his direction.

She’s coming this way?!

Gu Changqing’s heart skipped a beat. He immediately turned around to look at her.

The dragon-and-phoenix candles in the room were burning. The light wasn’t bright, but it wasn’t dim either. Yuan Baolin walked toward the table with a slightly agitated air. She was dressed in a red inner robe, the collar slightly askew, revealing a glimpse of her pale, slender neck.

Her smooth, jet-black hair hung loosely over her shoulders, making her fair skin appear to glow in contrast.

“You… what’s wrong?” He asked hoarsely.

Yuan Baolin poured herself a cup of tea. “It’s so hot… and I’m so thirsty.”

After saying that, she downed the cool tea in one gulp.

Still unsatisfied, she poured herself another cup.

She drank three cups in one breath, yet the heat within her did not subside. It remained unbearable, and her thirst was far from quenched.

Just as she was about to pour a fourth cup, Gu Changqing stopped her.

Sitting up, he looked at her and said, “Stop drinking, or you’ll upset your stomach.”

Yuan Baolin raised a hand to touch her feverish cheeks. “But I feel so uncomfortable.”

Gu Changqing glanced at her again and this time, he realized something was wrong. Her face was flushed with an abnormal redness, her eyes had turned slightly dazed, and even her breathing had grown rapid and shallow.

Gu Changqing didn’t want to assume the worst, but still asked cautiously, “What did you eat today?”

Yuan Baolin’s voice grew increasingly hazy. “Food… pastries.”

Gu Changqing drew in a sharp breath. The heat he had just managed to suppress flared up again at the sound of her breathy voice.

Forcing down the restlessness burning in his lower abdomen, he asked in his usual calm tone, “From Xiaobao?”

“Mm.” Yuan Baolin nodded.

If it had been sent by Gu Xiaobao, then it couldn’t be a problem. He ate from the same dishes himself. Even if someone wanted to meddle, no one would dare tamper with a child’s food.

“Nothing else?” He asked.

Yuan Baolin struggled to think; after a long pause, she finally said, “Oh… before you came back, the Old Madame had someone deliver a bowl of lotus seed soup.”

His grandmother again.

Excellent. It would have been harder not to guess it by now.

Gu Changqing might be a master of warfare, but when it came to the inner household, he was no match for Old Madame Gu. As the saying went, ginger only grows spicier with age.

If Gu Changqing had thought his grandmother would put all her eggs in one basket, that was far too naïve.

Such matters between man and woman naturally worked best when both were equally inflamed.

Yuan Baolin looked at him pitifully. “Gu Changqing, I’m so hot.”

Gu Changqing’s lashes trembled. He got up, walked to the door, and called out, “Someone!”

An elderly female servant on night duty came over, hastily throwing a cloak over her shoulders. “Young master.”

Gu Changqing ordered, “Bring some water.”

The matron blinked in surprise and blurted out, “So soon?”

It’s only been a short while since you closed the door. Shizi, your stamina really isn’t up to par!

It took Gu Changqing a second to realize what she meant. When he did, his expression froze. “Not that!”

…A lifetime of dignity, ruined in an instant.

The servant gave him a knowing look, as if to say, First time, huh? Perfectly understandable.

“I’ll fetch the water!” The servant said quickly and hurried off.

Before long, the entire kitchen knew that their shizi had requested water.

Gu Changqing was utterly speechless. When the elderly female servant finally returned with a bucket of hot water, he remembered, far too late, that he had meant cold water.

“Cold water. Ice.” Gu Changqing said coldly. Then, after a pause, he added, “Rope.”

If all else failed, he would tie himself up.

The elderly female servant gave him another look filled with unspoken meaning.

Not much skill, but quite the imagination.

Would he like a couple of candles to go with that?

Gu Changqing’s face darkened completely. “Do you still want to keep your position in this household?”

The elderly female servant scurried off at once.

And then, soon enough, the entire kitchen was abuzz with gossip, that the shizi’s technique was lacking, but he made up for it with creativity.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
