When Gu Changqing’s marriage came to a close, Gu Jiao began preparing to set out for Hidden Night Island.

Xiao Heng would be accompanying her, and Duke An would return to the State of Yan as well.

Their plan was to stay for a while in Shengdu, and as long as Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng managed to cross the icy plains before the extreme weather of the tenth month, all would be well.

The only problem before them was that the twins were still far too young.

Could they possibly withstand such long and exhausting travel?

At the Princess Estate.

The whole family was gathered in Princess Xinyang’s chamber.

Princess Xinyang began, “There’s too much rain in the fourth month; traveling by water isn’t suitable. You’ll have to go by land instead. But a carriage ride is too bumpy, and little Yan’er and Cong’er are only two months old.”

Gu Jiao fell silent.

It was, indeed, a very real concern.

A two-month-old infant would suffer terribly in a carriage, especially since in the State of Yan, the weather turned hot quickly.

By the fifth month it would already feel like midsummer, and sitting in a stuffy carriage all day would be like being steamed alive.

Even Xiao Ji, who had always been rather bold in raising children, agreed with Qin Fengwen’s worries this time.

Making the tiny twins endure such a journey would be far too harsh.

Princess Xinyang looked at Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng and said, “Either you wait until they’re older and go next year, or you leave the children here. I’ll take care of them.”

But the remains of Gu Jiao’s Godfather were still buried on Hidden Night Island.

She had already waited a year, she could not bear to wait another.

Besides, even if the twins were a year older, they still wouldn’t be suited for long travel.

Gu Jiao turned to Xiao Heng.

He said softly, “Whatever you decide.”

Gu Jiao said, “Then let’s leave the children in the capital.”

Xiao Heng held her hand. “You won’t find it hard to part with them?”

Gu Jiao thought for a moment. “Not too much. What about you?”

Xiao Heng brushed a strand of hair from her temple and said with a faint smile, “Of course, I’m fine.”

Yet the moment they returned to Lanting Courtyard, Xiao Heng locked himself in the room, clutching the twins in his arms and refusing to let go, his eyes rimmed red.

……

Their travel preparations had been ready for months and they could depart at any time.

The two first entered the palace to bid farewell to Grandaunt.

Naturally, Grandaunt wished to keep them by her side forever, but children grow up, and one day they must venture out into the world to fulfill their own destinies.

All she could do was guard their home and wait for each of their returns.

After leaving the palace, the couple went to Bishui Alley and Marquis Ding’an Estate respectively to say goodbye.

By the time they returned to the Princess Mansion, night had already fallen.

But that very night, something entirely unexpected happened——

The twins were gone!

“Wuuu… it’s all my fault… I didn’t watch over the young master and young miss” Yu Ya’er was crying her heart out by the door, gasping between sobs.

Gu Jiao did not scold her but instead asked calmly, “Don’t cry first. Tell me exactly what happened. Everything, in detail.”

Yu Ya’er recounted the evening’s events word for word.

The twins had spent the entire day over at Princess Xinyang’s residence. It was already night when she brought them back.

The twins were still lively and showed no signs of sleep, so she had placed them both on Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao’s bed, thinking to let them play for a little while longer.

She had been sitting in the room, knitting.

Someone from the kitchen came by to ask whether she should prepare a late-night snack for the Young Marquis and Young Madame.

Yu Ya’er went out and told her a few of the snacks that the two of them liked.

“I was standing right here at the door… right here…” Yu Ya’er pointed to the spot where she had been talking with the kitchen servant, tears streaming down her face. “I never thought that in just that short moment… when I went back into the room… Yan’er and Cong’er were gone…”

“Was Long Yi in the estate at the time?” Xiao Heng asked.

Yu Ya’er wiped her tears and pointed forward. “He was… he was right there in the courtyard, sharpening charcoal pencils. When Yan’er and Cong’er disappeared, he ran out to look for them.”

The first thought that crossed their minds was that someone had infiltrated the mansion and stolen the twins.

But from where Yu Ya’er had been standing and pointing, Long Yi had been facing directly toward the doorway.

There was no way any assassin could have snuck into the courtyard right under Long Yi’s nose, much less abducted the twins.

Xiao Heng entered the room. He carefully examined every inch of it and came to a conclusion. “No fourth person came in.”

There had been only three inside: Yu Ya’er and the twins.

Gu Jiao frowned. “If no one else came in, then how did Yan’er and Cong’er disappear?”

Xiao Heng’s gaze fell on the bedside cabinet. “I remember that when you went out this morning, you placed your little medicine chest there.”

Gu Jiao nodded. “That’s right, huh? The medicine chest is gone too!”

Fact: The little medicine chest could not possibly have been stolen.

Therefore——

It was the little medicine chest that had taken the twins away!

Gu Jiao’s hair practically stood on end as she clenched her little fists, her face darkening on the spot!

……

Imperial Advisor’s Hall.

A young man dressed in a moon-white Imperial Advisor’s robe stepped into the Qilin Hall.

The disciples on duty inside all bowed respectfully. “Imperial Advisor.”

Ye Qing inclined his head slightly.

He wore mourning cloth tied around his arm, though no one knew for whom he was wearing it.

He walked along the long corridor on the right side of the Qilin Hall until he reached the chamber at the end. Facing the two death warriors guarding the door, he said, “I’m going in to tidy up a bit. Open the door.”

“Yes, Imperial Advisor!”

The two death warriors obeyed the command of the newly appointed young Imperial Advisor, took out their keys, and unlocked the chamber.

Ye Qing stepped into the place that his master had once instructed him to guard with his life.

But just as he lit the oil lamp, he froze. In what was supposed to be an empty chamber, there now sat two adorably chubby little babies!

“Ah!”

Startled out of his wits, his legs went weak, and he fell straight to the ground!

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
