On the third day after Gu Jiao drank with Mu Chuan and the others, the eldest son of the Mu Family resigned from his post, claiming responsibility for a murder committed under his jurisdiction. He said he had failed in governance and was unworthy of holding office, begging Her Majesty to approve his resignation.
Shangguan Yan approved it.
Soon after, floods struck the south. The Mu Family donated five million taels of silver for disaster relief, which was practically all they had.
They did not have that much cash, so they had to use their estates, shops, and other properties as payment.
Though it was called a donation, in truth it was no different from confiscation.
Mu Chuan sat alone in his room as guards came and went, carrying away valuables.
“Wait! You can’t take that!” His servant stopped a guard holding a cloisonne enamel vase. “That was the young master’s birthday gift! He loves using it to keep his little fish!”
That was a childhood memory.
Mu Chuan had been mischievous and restless, often breaking things at home. Later, the Mu Family head brought back an expensive cloisonne vase. It was intended for flower arranging, but Mu Chuan had the idea to raise fish in it instead.
“Let them take it.” Mu Chuan said calmly.
“But, young master…” The servant hesitated, his heart aching. “They’re taking everything from your room. At least keep this vase as a keepsake…”
Mu Chuan said softly, “No. I don’t need keepsakes. This is fine.”
The guards took the vase. His gold-inlaid jade belt was also packed away, leaving only worthless clothes behind.
“Young master…” The servant choked, looking at him.
Mu Chuan had always been impulsive, yet now, facing this downfall, he was the calmest of them all.
He slowly stood and walked out of the house he had lived in for twenty years.
As he stepped over the threshold, he turned back one last time for a silent farewell.
……
What the Mu Family had done to the Xuanyuan Family back then was no lighter than what the Han or Nangong Families had done. They might not have schemed against them on the battlefield, but when it came to adding insult to injury and framing them, the Mu Family showed no mercy.
So Shangguan Yan showed them none in return.
One morning before dawn, the entire Mu Family left the inner city in a shabby carriage.
All the servants were dismissed, leaving only a few old ones who refused to go.
More than thirty people moved into an old house in the outer city, a property that had been Old Madame Mu’s dowry, the only asset that hadn’t been “handed over.”
They had lived in luxury all their lives; now, as commoners, the family wept bitterly.
One stormy night, Old Madame Mu fell ill. Mu Chuan braved the rain, searching for physicians everywhere.
But once they heard it was for a member of the Mu Family, no physician dared to come.
Everyone knew how the Mu Family had once “exposed” the Xuanyuan Family. Now that the Xuanyuan Family’s innocence had been restored and Her Majesty was on the throne, the Mu Family members had lost all favor. Anyone who helped them would be seen as opposing both Her Majesty and the Xuanyuan Family.
That night, drenched in the downpour, Mu Chuan finally understood the despair of ruin and exile.
Exhausted, he stumbled back toward the old house like a man with no soul.
As he reached the gate, a familiar voice called behind him.
“Mu Chuan.”
He turned, rain blurring his vision.
Through the curtain of rain, he saw Gu Jiao in a blue dress, holding an oil-paper umbrella and carrying her medicine chest, walking toward him.
The rain was cold, but the tears that ran from his eyes burned hot.
His throat tightened painfully.
Gu Jiao treated Old Madame Mu’s illness, left enough medicine, and told her to rest and avoid exertion.
Before she left, Old Madame Mu handed Mu Chuan a brocade box. “The Second Prince’s Consort asked me to give this to you.”
Mu Chuan froze. “She… told you who she is?”
Old Madame Mu gave a weak smile. “Yes, I never would have thought she was the valiant young commander of the Black Wind Cavalry. Truly a woman no lesser than any man.”
Old Madame Mu was a clever woman. She said with emotion, “She’s both a princess consort and a commander of the Black Wind Cavalry. By coming to our house openly, she’s showing the world that Her Majesty and the Xuanyuan Family haven’t destroyed the Mu Family completely. From now on, anyone who wants to slight us will have to think twice.”
Mu Chuan nodded and opened the brocade box with trembling hands.
Inside were a stack of silver banknotes, an Imperial Advisor’s Hall recommendation for the imperial examinations, and a note left by Gu Jiao.
“Mu Chuan, don’t give up.”
Tears spilled from Mu Chuan’s eyes——
……
During her stay in Shengdu, Gu Jiao also visited the chess club. Unfortunately, the Chess Saint of the Six States, Old Master Meng, had stayed in the State of Qing ever since he went back to mediate peace. He hadn’t returned to the State of Yan.
Gu Jiao guessed the old man was probably pretending to be a beggar again, roaming different states in search of new Chess talents. Well, as long as he was happy, there was no need for him to live quietly at home as people expected.
In the early days of the eighth month, Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng set off for Hidden Night Island. The twins stayed in the imperial palace, and Little Jing Kong remained in Shengdu, as Xuanyuan Qi wanted to spend more time with him.
Since Hidden Night Island rarely interacted with the outside world, Gu Jiao brought only Liao Chen and a few elite experts from the Shadow Division.
“That’s not enough people.” Shangguan Yan said. “I’ll send you another team.”
She sent Feng Wuxiu, the head of the Feng Family.
Outside the imperial palace, Feng Wuxiu held a bag of fried pastries, chewing one noisily before offering the rest to Gu Jiao. “Want some?”
Gu Jiao was speechless.
Taoist Qingfeng, worried for his younger brother’s safety, secretly followed them.
Liao Chen, who had hoped to escape his pursuer by going to Hidden Night Island, once again found himself in misfortune.
This time they weren’t marching to war, so they didn’t need to rush. It took them a month and a half to reach Pucheng.
After resting there for two nights and catching up with General Chang Wei, they left the Black Wind King under his temporary care. On the third morning, they set out again.
Three days later, they crossed the northern border of the State of Yan and stepped onto the icy plains leading to Hidden Night Island.
“Where did Chang Jing say the icefield wolves are kept?” Gu Jiao searched through her pouch. “I lost the map.”
“It’s fine, I know where.” Xiao Heng said.
“How do you know?” Gu Jiao asked.
“I read the map.” Xiao Heng replied.
Gu Jiao nodded. “Alright, then lead the way. Taoist Qingfeng, come with us.”
The three of them went to find the sleds and icefield wolves belonging to Hidden Night Island. Feng Wuxiu, wrapped in thick fur, squatted beside an ice hole, staring at the flowing water below and swallowing hungrily.
Liao Chen glanced at him with a smirk. “What are you looking at?”
“There are so many fish down there.” Feng Wuxiu said with longing. “I wonder if they taste good.”
……
The ice wolves of Hidden Night Island were free-ranging across the icefield. Trained to hunt but not to wander far, they would rush to the familiar whistle when called.
Gu Jiao took out the whistle Chang Jing had given her and blew it.
She blinked. “Hm? No response.”
The sound frequency was beyond human hearing, audible only to wolves. If the whistle broke, they wouldn’t be able to tell.
Gu Jiao blew again.
Still, there was no reaction.
“Let me try.” said Xiao Heng.
Gu Jiao handed him the whistle. Xiao Heng blew a few steady notes, and before long, an icefield wolf appeared.
Then two, three, more and more wolves ran toward him.
The cold wind howled as he stood in the vast white expanse, his gaze sharp and cold, his entire presence merging with the frozen wilderness, exuding a power both unfamiliar and formidable.
Gu Jiao tilted her head and looked at him.
Hmm, her husband was so handsome.
Today was another day of being charmed by her husband.
There were twenty-one icefield wolves in total, including a young wolf king.
The little wolf king was fierce, especially toward strangers without the scent of Hidden Night Island.
It bared its teeth, showing aggression.
Xiao Heng showed no fear. He calmly stepped forward, knelt on one knee, and gently pressed his slender, jade-like hand on the wolf king’s head.
Then, a miracle happened. The wolf king instantly calmed down.
Gu Jiao was surprised. “You can tame wolves too?”
“Chang Jing taught me.” Xiao Heng replied.
The little wolf king began digging and uncovered a buried shelter. It led the pack inside and pulled out the sleds.
Gu Jiao’s eyes lit up. “That’s a sled! It must have been made by my godfather and the people of Hidden Night Island!”
At the mention of her godfather, Xiao Heng’s expression darkened.
That man again!
When the three returned on the sleds, Liao Chen and Feng Wuxiu were sitting cross-legged on the snow, grilling fish.
Feng Wuxiu grabbed a skewer of fish, blew on it, took a big bite, and said to Liao Chen, “Brother, this is amazing!”
Taoist Qingfeng’s gaze turned cold. Who are you calling brother?

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
