Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng were hit squarely in the face by the cold wind blowing toward them, their cheeks puffing up from the force. When they turned the corner, even their faces seemed to change shape.
However, there was nothing either of them could do. They could either keep their mouths shut or open them and end up looking like two expressionless, sad-faced frogs.
Long Yi had wanted to carry Gu Jiao under his arm for a long time.
But Gu Jiao had been pregnant, so he couldn’t carry her.
Then Gu Jiao had given birth, so he still couldn’t carry her.
After that, Gu Jiao was in confinement and once again couldn’t be carried.
Now, finally, he could do it!
As for Xiao Heng, he was simply included, two for the price of one.
On the island, the fishermen were busy cleaning freshly caught fish.
Whoosh!
A shadow streaked across the sky above their heads!
The fishermen exchanged bewildered looks.
A long while passed before another whoosh echoed through the air, the same shadow flashed past overhead once again!
Gu Jiao’s expression darkened as her temper began to rise.
You’ve already circled the island twice!
By the time Long Yi finished the third lap and finally put them down, the sky had turned completely dark, yet he still looked reluctant to stop.
Meanwhile, Chang Jing had long since spotted Long Yi flitting through the air above the island with his qinggong. Realizing that his own people had arrived, he hurried to the ferry dock to bring the other three onto the island and into the Hidden Night Sect.
Chang Jing was acquainted with both Liao Chen and Taoist Qingfeng. The three of them had once fought side by side on the frontier, and later, when Liao Chen had stayed for a time in the capital of the State of Zhao, he had frequent dealings with the Marquis Xuanping Estate.
The only one Chang Jing did not know was Feng Wuxiu.
“My younger brother.” Taoist Qingfeng introduced.
As soon as he said this, both men saw Feng Wuxiu tugging at Liao Chen’s sleeve, drooling a little as he said, “Brother, I just saw some wild pheasants on the island. Let’s have chicken for dinner tonight!”
Chang Jing fell silent.
Taoist Qingfeng also had nothing to say.
The Hidden Night Sect, in fact, was divided between its outer and inner branches, though both were located on the island. The process of becoming a disciple of the sect began with joining the outer branch; only after enduring rigorous training and passing multiple rounds of selection would one earn the right to enter the inner branch.
Inner branch disciples had access to the sect’s most powerful martial arts techniques and cultivation manuals, as well as a far richer supply of medicinal pills.
Although Chang Jing was the sect’s young master, he too had trained his way up from the outer branch step by step, as had his seven older sisters.
Since Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng were family rather than visitors from the martial world, Chang Jing and Long Yi brought them directly to their residence instead of lodging them elsewhere.
It was worth mentioning that Long Yi also had his own quarters on the island, and they were even larger than Chang Jing’s.
Long Yi had wanted to show off his domain to his little master and to Gu Jiao, but first, he had to pay a visit to Chang Kun out of courtesy.
Inside the reception hall, the group of five was received by Chang Kun and the seven ladies of the Chang Family.
Liao Chen, Xiao Heng, Gu Jiao, and Chang Kun were old acquaintances, while Taoist Qingfeng and Feng Wuxiu were new faces.
The eldest miss said, “Seventh Sister, that Taoist looks very handsome.”
The second miss said, “I think the monk looks more handsome.”
The third miss chimed in, “The young man beside the Taoist looks adorable, doesn’t he? He seems so gentle and well-behaved. Seventh Sister, why don’t you pick him?”
The fourth miss eagerly agreed, “Yes, yes! Forget that Ye Qing fellow! He’s in mourning for three years. By the time he’s done, you’ll be nearly thirty!”
The seventh miss, Chang Yu, could no longer contain herself and snapped through gritted teeth, “What are you talking about! Why do you always make me sound so old! I’m only twenty-one this year!”
“Twenty-two.” The sixth miss corrected solemnly. “You just had your birthday yesterday. Twenty-three by nominal age.”
The fifth miss, who had been quiet all this time, murmured, “Don’t you think the most handsome one is the man beside the little girl?”
At that, everyone turned in unison to look at Xiao Heng, who was walking into the reception hall hand in hand with Gu Jiao.
They had been traveling for a long time, and though everyone looked somewhat travel-worn and dusty, it did little to diminish their youthful, striking appearance.
But Xiao Heng was different.
There was a certain aura about him that set him apart from the rest, something that the seven sisters could not quite put into words.
The second miss pondered for a moment and said, “He doesn’t look like someone who knows martial arts, yet there’s an invisible air of authority around him that makes one feel subdued.”
Chang Yu said bluntly, “The little girl is beautiful!”
Chang Jing stepped between the two groups and began his introductions. “Let me introduce everyone. This is my father.”
He mainly said this for the sake of the Feng brothers.
Taoist Qingfeng cupped his hands politely. “Qingfeng from Baiyun Temple. I’ve long heard of the Hidden Night Sect Leader’s reputation. This is my younger brother, Feng Wuxiu.”
Chang Kun laughed warmly. “Taoist Qingfeng, I’ve heard of your name for quite some time.” His gaze then shifted to Feng Wuxiu, and his eyes lit up, for the young man’s age and appearance were both quite suitable. “Young Hero Feng, I’ve long heard of you as well.”
Feng Wuxiu was self-aware enough to know that he was merely a nameless figure; Chang Kun’s words were simply polite formalities.
He respectfully bowed as a junior. “Sect Leader Chang.”
Chang Kun seemed very satisfied with his demeanor.
Then Chang Jing turned toward his sisters and began introducing them one by one. “This is my eldest sister, Chang Ying; second sister, Chang Ling; third sister, Chang Yun; fourth sister, Chang Xiu; fifth sister, Chang Xing; sixth sister, Chang Jun; and seventh sister, Chang Yu.”
Chang Ying was not much younger than Princess Xinyang, and both Chang Ling and Chang Yun were also in their thirties.
Despite their age, they all appeared youthful and spirited, exuding a sense of upright heroism and martial valor that belonged to true heroines of the martial world.
To Gu Jiao, it felt as though she had encountered the seven fairies of legend in real life, each stunningly beautiful in their own unique way, all of them strong, capable, and dazzling.
Chang Jing then introduced, “This is the Little Marquis of Zhao, Xiao Heng, and Commander of the Black Wind Cavalry, Gu Jiao. They are husband and wife.”
Ordinarily, when introducing a woman, people would refer to her as the daughter of such-and-such a family if unmarried, or as someone’s wife if she was married.
But Chang Jing did not do that.
He remembered what Princess Xinyang and Aunt Yu Jin had once told him: every woman should first and foremost be her own person, and only afterward someone’s wife.
That night, the six brothers-in-law of the Chang Family also came over.
The Chang Family upheld very good values. The seven young ladies were forthright and generous by nature, and their husbands were not the scheming or jealous type, so everyone got along comfortably without any tension.
Dinner was served in the Hidden Night Island’s highest standard of hospitality——a full fish banquet.
The main ingredients were the fishermen’s catch of the day: fresh sea fish, shrimp, and crab. The cooking methods were not as elaborate as the full fish banquets Gu Jiao had seen in her previous life, focusing instead on grilling, pickling, stewing, and serving raw dishes, preserving the ingredients’ purest flavors and freshness to the greatest extent.
Feng Wuxiu couldn’t stop eating.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
