Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Looking at the countless failed samples, Gu Jiao could almost imagine the godfather planting the purple herb again and again, only to fail each time, until despair and collapse finally consumed him completely.

There was nothing else of note in the laboratory, as though every trace of his tireless struggle had been deliberately erased by his own hands.

Long Yi moved to the shelf on the right side of the entrance and pressed a switch on the wall. A sharp click echoed through the room, as if some kind of lock had just been released.

Then, with a push, he revealed a hidden door embedded in the wall.

Seeing Long Yi step through it, Gu Jiao followed without hesitation.

The sight that greeted her left her completely stunned.

It was neither an operating room nor a laboratory, but rather… a small indoor playground.

Long Yi spread his arms wide and dove straight into a pool filled with blue and white plastic balls.

He was far too big now to be buried by them, so he plunged his head beneath the surface instead.

Aside from the ball pit, there were trampolines, rope bridges, climbing walls, and rainbow ladders, various facilities that would normally be found in a child’s play area.

However, upon closer inspection, these were not the same as the ones in shopping malls from her past life. The designs were more complex, the slopes steeper, and there were even data-monitoring devices embedded throughout.

“So, is this really a place for Long Yi to play, or is it actually a training ground?” Gu Jiao murmured.

Long Yi went over to ride on a small wooden horse from his childhood, but unfortunately, he was already far too big for it. His arms and legs had to bend awkwardly just to sit, and the cramped posture made him look rather uncomfortable.

Even so, he began to rock back and forth, one motion at a time.

Gu Jiao had the growing feeling that this place was not as simple as an indoor playground. As she was still observing her surroundings, a mechanical sound suddenly came from above her head: “Beep~”

A thin green light beam swept down, scanning Long Yi from head to toe.

Then, the rotating detector above spoke, its mechanical voice echoing clearly through the room: “Mengmeng, welcome home.”

So, it really was calling him Mengmeng.

Back then, Long Yi had only been five years old when he left. After all these years, how could this machine still recognize him and confirm his biometric data?

As she was pondering this question, the green light shifted and swept over Gu Jiao’s body. The indicator light flickered twice, and the mechanical voice spoke again, but this time, its tone was noticeably cold.

“Unknown intruder detected. Should I proceed with elimination?”

A whole row of gun barrels slid out from within the walls, all of them aimed squarely at Gu Jiao.

Her brow twitched sharply.

The next second, Long Yi shot up, ready to pull Gu Jiao toward him, but before he could make a move, the detector spoke.

“System paused.”

“System error.”

“System rebooting.”

“System overload.”

Gu Jiao had no idea what was happening. After another series of beeping mechanical sounds, the detector drooped downward and powered off completely.

Uh… so the crisis was just resolved like that?

Three seconds later, it restarted again. First, it retracted all the gun barrels, then once more scanned Long Yi.

This time, its tone was cheerful, carrying a pleasant cadence as it said, “Mengmeng, today is a wonderful day. Welcome home.”

And that was all. It didn’t continue scanning Gu Jiao.

“Is the godfather here?” Gu Jiao asked the machine.

It didn’t respond.

“Is King here?” Gu Jiao called out the godfather’s codename used within the organization.

Still, there was no response.

“Long Yi, talk to it.” Gu Jiao said, turning to him.

Long Yi lifted his head to look at the detector, thought for a moment, and then said with the serious tone of someone giving instructions, “You have to talk.”

Surprisingly, the machine reacted. Its voice became light and warm, almost as if it were smiling. “Does Mengmeng want to chat?”

“JiaoJiao has something to ask you.” Long Yi said.

The detector immediately began scanning Gu Jiao again.

“Unknown intruder detected. Should I proceed with elimination?”

“System paused.”

“System error.”

“System rebooting.”

“System overload.”

The detector shut down once again.

Gu Jiao sighed. “Looks like it won’t work.”

She had hoped to retrieve some information about the godfather from its database.

She couldn’t tell whether the system itself had malfunctioned, or if the godfather had deliberately programmed an avoidance protocol. That man truly had departed without leaving a single trace behind, not even a fragment of his words.

However, this trip was not entirely fruitless.

Long Yi led Gu Jiao to see his bedroom. To her surprise, the place where he had once slept as a child was actually a hibernation pod.

At the base of the pod, detailed records of the lifeform it contained were inscribed.

“K93 Star System. Intelligent lifeform. Class: S.”

Was this referring to Long Yi?

So Long Yi was not from this time and space either.

What did “Class” mean? Was it a measure of combat strength? No wonder Long Yi was so powerful.

But how had the godfather encountered someone as extraordinary as Long Yi?

It all felt deeply connected to that little medicine chest.

Long Yi lay back inside his hibernation pod, placing his hands neatly over his abdomen. His expression and posture were obedient, identical to how he must have looked when he was a child.

Gu Jiao asked softly, “Long Yi, do you still remember when you first met your father?”

Long Yi shook his head.

Then, as if recalling something, he sat up, went over to his desk, opened a drawer, and took out a photograph from Gu Jiao’s previous life.

In the photo, she was on an undercover mission, her expression cold and distant. She wore a red camisole dress and a crescent-shaped jade pendant around her neck.

It was the very same pendant she had given to Xuanyuan Qi.

After Long Yi’s memories had been erased by the people of the Sword Lodge, his subconscious had still retained the image of that jade pendant. When he saw the same pendant hanging from Xuanyuan Qi’s neck during an assassination attempt, he had given up on completing his mission.

Gu Jiao pointed at the photograph and asked, “Did your father ever tell you who she was?”

Long Yi nodded and said solemnly, “He said she was the most important person in his life, the one person that, if I ever met, I must protect no matter what.”

……

In the courtyard, Xiao Heng was having tea with Chang Kun. Every so often, his gaze would wander toward the house.

Chang Kun chuckled. “If Little Marquis is that curious, you can always go inside and take a look.”

Xiao Heng gave a cold snort. “Curious? About what? About the man who built Hidden Night Island at all costs for my wife, who cultivated purple herb, who treated her better than I do, and who occupied her thoughts every single day? I’m not curious at all!”

Chang Kun was speechless for a moment before thinking silently, …Then maybe stop shaking your leg before you say that?

It was a full hour before Gu Jiao and Long Yi finally came out.

Xiao Heng’s eyes had already drifted to her the instant she appeared, though his expression remained deliberately calm. “Finished looking?”

Gu Jiao gave a quiet hum of acknowledgment, her mood clearly subdued.

The moment Xiao Heng saw her looking so downhearted over another man, he felt an almost uncontrollable urge to jump to his feet.

Keeping his composure, he asked evenly, “Did you find anything?”

Gu Jiao shook her head. “No. He erased everything too thoroughly, as if he were afraid I might discover something here.”

Xiao Heng raised his hand and gently patted her head. “He didn’t want you to be sad.”

Xiao Heng thought that if it had been him, he would have done the same.

Everything that man had done was not for her gratitude, but so that she could live without burdens, free from grief or guilt.

He wanted her to know nothing of his time in hell; he wanted her to keep walking forward, toward the light.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
