Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

The old woman had originally intended to ignore the two of them entirely, but perhaps she feared that if this continued any longer, that troublesome woman would burn her entire house down.

So she came over with a dark expression and helped the two of them dry the quilts properly, then brought over another new bedding set which she also dried before handing it to Princess Xinyang.

Princess Xinyang laid the bed, then helped Xiao Ji remove his armor before supporting him onto the now warm bedding.

“I will go get us something to eat.” She pulled the quilt over him and then headed toward the kitchen shed.

The old woman lived under harsh conditions, and aside from some pickled vegetables and hard flatbread, there was nothing else left in the kitchen.

But the flatbread was so hard that it was practically impossible to bite into.

Princess Xinyang looked at the water vat and immediately came up with an idea.

The old woman was in her own room twisting hemp rope. She was old, unable to farm or hunt, so she made a living by doing simple handicraft work.

She assumed the two guests were ready to eat, and one of them looked so delicate and picky that he probably would not eat anything cold or hard.

She was only one step late, because just when she was about to go heat food for the two of them, the kitchen shed had already caught fire.

Princess Xinyang, now a little soot-covered justice magistrate, stood awkwardly in the courtyard.

The old woman stared at her in speechless disbelief.

Princess Xinyang pretended to stay calm and said in a deep voice, “I have cooked in my own home before. It is your stove that does not work properly.”

The old woman: “…”

Princess Xinyang took off the gold bracelet from her wrist and gave it to the old woman as compensation.

The old woman went to the cellar, took out a piece of preserved meat, and made a stew with flatbread for the two of them.

Princess Xinyang looked at the bowl of meat broth on the table and said to the old woman with a resentful tone, “So you were hiding the good food.”

The old woman expressionlessly left the room.

Xiao Ji could not stop laughing, and the laughter made his wounds ache so badly that his body twitched with the pain.

The weather in the eastern regions was strange this year, because even though the first month of the year was almost over, it unexpectedly snowed once again.

Snowflakes as light as goose feathers drifted down in the air, and unlike the winter scenery of the capital, the snowfall in the great mountains carried a kind of serene stillness that made a person feel as though their heart was gradually settling into deep tranquility.

Princess Xinyang helped the old woman bring in the clothes and bundles of hemp rope that had been hanging outside to dry.

“Elder, where have your family members all gone?” She asked.

It was merely a casual question, and she had thought the old woman would not respond, but after a moment of silence, the woman answered in her frail, aged voice, “They are gone. Taken away to fight in the war. All dead.”

Princess Xinyang looked at the solitary, stooped figure of the old woman and said nothing more.

“She saw it.”

That night, while the two of them lay on the bed, Princess Xinyang said this to Xiao Ji.

“Hmm?” Xiao Ji did not quite understand how this topic had suddenly appeared.

Princess Xinyang stared blankly at the pitch-black beams above them and said in a daze, “She saw us kill the Dongyi soldiers. She did not report us because she hates the Dongyi soldiers as well. Her family was taken to serve as forced conscripts, and all of them died in battle.”

The cruelty of war was something ordinary people could hardly bear.

Xiao Ji also disliked war, but it was part of his duty, and if he did not fight, the homeland behind him would be destroyed.

The Dongyi soldiers were the same.

Everyone fought for their own ruler.

But he had always been strongly against the practice of seizing common people to forcibly make them soldiers. The Dongyi King deserved death, and the monarchy of the Dongyi Tribe deserved to be overturned.

He reached out and held her hand, silently giving her comfort and strength in the darkness.

Princess Xinyang’s emotions gradually settled.

“Xiao Ji, are you asleep?”

She asked softly.

What answered her was a steady, even breathing.

Of course. He was so gravely injured and burning with fever; he must have been exhausted long ago.

Yet Princess Xinyang found herself unable to fall asleep. She propped herself up with her elbow, and under the faint snowy glow streaming through the cracks of the window, she stared at his sleeping face without blinking.

Twenty years had passed, and his elegance had truly not diminished in the slightest.

“Xiao Ji.”

She called him again.

Xiao Ji slept deeply.

She gazed at him fixedly, and suddenly a bold thought flashed through her mind.

Her cheeks flushed, and she plunged her head down for a moment.

Was she possessed?

How could she even think of doing something like this?

And yet——

She slowly lifted her head again, shyly stealing glances at him, her heart pounding wildly in her chest.

After all… he was asleep and would not know.

The well-educated, dignified, and graceful Princess Xinyang finally summoned her courage, her cheeks burning as she leaned closer, her gaze shimmering as it landed upon the thin, diamond-shaped curve of his lips.

She took a deep breath and did the boldest thing she had ever done in her entire life. She lowered her head and let her lips lightly brush against his cheek.

From within the darkness came a low, mocking laugh. “Qin Fengwen, after taking so long to gather courage, that is all you can do?”

Princess Xinyang’s hair instantly stood on end.

He was actually pretending to be asleep?

Why was he always like this?!

Princess Xinyang felt completely undone, and although the words she had spoken inside the cave were merely embarrassing things she wished she could forget, what had just happened was something far more real and substantial, because she had actually kissed his face.

Ah!

To think that she was caught doing such a thing!

Did she truly not care about her own dignity anymore?

Princess Xinyang burned with humiliation and anger, her chest rising and falling in sharp uneven breaths as she glared fiercely at him. “Why are you always like this?”

“Always like what?” He asked in that infuriating, provoking manner of his.

Princess Xinyang opened her mouth but could not bring herself to speak, mainly because she did not know what she should even say.

She was not someone who lacked verbal skill, but every single time she encountered Xiao Ji, she would become so angry that her words would scatter into incoherence.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
