Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

The snow was falling even harder now, making it the perfect weather for launching a surprise attack.

The rebels would never even dream that the starving Cangzhou army, whose ribs were practically showing through their skin, would still dare to launch a night raid against them on such a snowy night.

It was an act of pure desperation.

Guo Mang carefully selected one hundred of the strongest and most formidable soldiers, and none of them were given any supper, because they had saved the very last roots and scraps of horse meat for these one hundred warriors.

Tonight’s battle would end in either glorious success or an honorable death.

After barely filling their stomachs, Guo Mang personally led the hundred soldiers into action, and before departing, he appointed Deputy General Lin as acting commander, telling him that if he did not return, then Lin should continue leading the army in his stead.

The group rode their horses into the storm of thick, falling snow, disappearing into the night.

They took the long way around, passing through the forest to the east, crossing the frozen lake, and finally reaching the right flank of the rebel camp.

Everything progressed smoothly.

The horses were left behind in the woods, and Guo Mang led his men quietly into the enemy camp.

However, at that moment, something unexpected happened.

A large number of archers suddenly burst out from all directions, and they raised their bows in perfect unison, completely surrounding them.

Guo Mang’s expression changed drastically!

Immediately after, a brazen and arrogant laugh sounded from behind them, and the archers parted to create a path, revealing a burly and towering man in his thirties, clad in armor and sporting a thick, full beard, who strode toward Guo Mang with heavy, confident steps.

He stopped at a distance of ten paces from Guo Mang.

Guo Mang stared at him, utterly stunned. “Zhou Chongyue?”

No good, they had fallen into a trap!

Zhou Chongyue had never been injured; he had intentionally spread false information to lure him into launching a night raid!

Although the rebels had more soldiers and plentiful provisions, giving them a large advantage in open battle, Guo Mang was no pushover either, and he excelled in defense. Otherwise, Zhou Chongyue would have already crushed them long ago!

Zhou Chongyue laughed and said, “General Guo, it was no easy feat to lure you here, but do not panic just yet. Listen to what I have to say. I, surnamed Zhou, greatly admire General Guo. If General Guo is willing to surrender to me, I promise you that not only will I spare your life, but I will also protect the lives of your men. The mountain passes have been sealed by snow, and you have been starving for many days, have you not? As it happens, I have fine wine and good food prepared especially for General Guo and your officers.”

When he finished speaking, he clapped his hands.

Behind the archers, a row of camp cooks carrying braziers and several whole roasted sheep walked forward.

The scent of roasted mutton blended with the rich aroma of sesame, instantly filling the nostrils of the starving Cangzhou soldiers and making their mouths water uncontrollably.

Even Guo Mang swallowed hard.

Zhou Chongyue smiled and gestured invitingly. “General Guo, please, help yourself.”

Guo Mang stared at the sizzling, oil-dripping roasted sheep, and his eyes shone green with hunger. With drool trickling from his lips, he walked toward the roasted sheep in a dazed and mindless state.

Zhou Chongyue’s smile grew satisfied.

But just as they brushed past each other, Guo Mang suddenly thrust his sword straight toward Zhou Chongyue!

Zhou Chongyue's expression changed drastically!

Fortunately, his reactions were incredibly quick, and he managed to clamp down on Guo Mang’s wrist just in time.

Guo Mang was simply too starved, his strength unable to manifest fully, otherwise that sword strike would have already landed!

“General Guo, it seems you refuse a toast only to drink a forfeit instead!” Zhou Chongyue let out a cold laugh, then kicked Guo Mang squarely in the chest, sending him and his sword crashing into the snow.

The remaining Cangzhou soldiers snapped back to their senses and drew the swords at their waists, rushing toward Zhou Chongyue with furious shouts.

A row of archers stepped in front of Zhou Chongyue, and together with the other archers, they formed a deadly encirclement around Guo Mang’s group.

Zhou Chongyue commanded coldly, “Kill them all! Leave no one alive!”

The archers released their arrows in unison, and the Cangzhou soldiers fell one after another, until the snow-covered ground was stained red with blood.

Guo Mang looked at the soldiers lying motionless in the blood-soaked snow, and his reddened eyes tightened around the sword he still held. “Zhou Chongyue, I will kill you!”

Zhou Chongyue snorted disdainfully. “Humph, just you?”

He seized Guo Mang by the throat with one hand and lifted him high into the air.

Guo Mang’s martial skills were not lacking, but he had not eaten for three days, so how could he possibly match Zhou Chongyue?

Just as Zhou Chongyue was about to twist his neck and snap it, a piercing cry of an eagle suddenly echoed across the vast sky.

Carrying a murderous aura so fierce that even the falling snow seemed to halt for an instant, that sound tore through the heavens.

Zhou Chongyue frowned.

The next second, a mighty eagle with wings dusted in snow swept down from the sky like a deadly blade.

A horrible shriek burst from the crowd, as if someone’s eyeball had been pecked out by the eagle!

Zhou Chongyue turned sharply toward the archer rolling on the ground while clutching his ruined right eye, and his brows furrowed deeply. He threw Guo Mang aside, snatched a bow and arrow from another archer, drew the bowstring, and aimed at the soaring eagle!

However, before he could release the arrow fully, a vicious red-tasseled spear hurtled through the air, piercing straight through his shoulder!

Caught off guard, Zhou Chongyue was thrown to the ground by the sheer force of the strike, his eyes widening in disbelief.

Amid the swirling snow, a youth clad in silver armor charged forward atop a warhorse also draped in silver armor. Though still young and tender-featured, his eyes were firm and cold like ice.

No army could stop him. His grip on the reins was steady as he rode through the battlefield as though it were empty, and the red cape fluttered behind him like a streak of blood across the snow.

Countless arrows rained down toward him, yet not a flicker of fear appeared in his gaze.

Zhou Chongyue stared at this wolf-like youth who radiated boundless ferocity, and his brows unconsciously tightened.

He had thought the attacker would be some formidable master, but this… was a kid?

How old was he?

Thirteen, perhaps?

And yet he had managed to injure him?

It must have been because he had been careless; it was pure luck that had let the boy succeed!

Child or not, if he dared to injure him, then he would pay the price!

He would tear his head off!

Zhou Chongyue gritted his teeth and yanked the red-tasseled spear from his shoulder.

To his shock, this spear was much heavier than any red-tasseled spear he had ever handled!

He could not help but wonder what kind of weapon it was.

He turned for a quick glance.

And froze.

What the hell——

So ugly!

The red-tasseled spear, covered in oversized bright-red flowers and braided with thick red tassels, was so hideous it sent a shiver down Zhou Chongyue’s entire body.

But in that fleeting instant of distraction, the youth had already broken through the archers’ formation and arrived directly before him.

The youth lashed out with his whip, catching the red-tasseled spear and pulling it back into his hand.

Then the warhorse’s front hooves rose high and mercilessly stomped Zhou Chongyue back into the snow just as he tried to rise!

Zhou Chongyue spat a mouthful of blood on the spot!

The youth lowered the tip of the red-tasseled spear and pressed it coldly against the center of his brow.

Zhou Chongyue stared at the gleaming spearhead before him, his body stiffening as the shock overwhelmed him. He, who had never once been defeated, actually had no power to fight back against this boy!

He lifted his gaze toward the icy, youthful face above him. The boy possessed a breathtakingly beautiful face.

But his eyes were frigid, detached, and brimming with killing intent.

Zhou Chongyue trembled as he asked, “You… Who are you?”

The youth spoke, each word striking like iron against stone. “Black Wind Cavalry, Xuanyuan Xi!”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
