Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Under the stunned, wide-eyed gazes of all the Wei soldiers, the two young people whose origins no one could quite place were taken away by Prime Minister Liu’s trusted confidants and brought into their encampment.

Inside a spacious and immaculately kept command tent, Gu Jiao finally met Liu Yisheng again after many long years apart.

He was already thirty years of age, with much of the youthful greenness he once had now faded away, replaced by a calm and elegant composure tempered by time, as well as the unmistakable nobility and sharp authority of someone long accustomed to holding power.

Nine years were more than enough to change a person beyond recognition.

Gu Jiao had once, in dreams of returning to the Marquis Ding’an Estate, heard people address him as Prime Minister Liu, and had known that one day he would surely rise to become both a Marquis and Prime Minister, yet seeing him in the flesh still felt different from what she had imagined.

Perhaps it was because she had never expected him to tread across the mountains and rivers of the State of Zhao and return with a heart set firmly on revenge.

As Gu Jiao was looking at Liu Yisheng, Liu Yisheng was also looking at Gu Jiao.

Her changes were just as striking: the birthmark on her face was gone, revealing the beauty that had once been sealed away, unfamiliar yet pleasantly surprising.

At twenty-four, an age like a blossom in full bloom, she was beautiful as a fairy.

What remained unchanged was the vibrant vitality she carried, and those pure, untainted eyes that held not the slightest trace of impurity.

It seemed that no matter how many years passed, and no matter how much she experienced, her original heart had never wavered.

“I’ll step outside first.” Jun Xiuhan said.

“All right.” Liu Yisheng replied.

Jun Xiuhan glanced at Xuanyuan Xi.

“I’m not going out!” Xuanyuan Xi said.

Liu Yisheng smiled, something rare for him, and said, “It’s fine.”

Jun Xiuhan was astonished.

He had never seen Liu Yisheng smile before.

Liu Yisheng said to him, “Go take care of your own matters, there’s nothing to worry about on my side.”

Jun Xiuhan looked at Gu Jiao and said, “Her martial arts are extremely high.” and then glanced again at Xuanyuan Xi beside her, adding, “This kid isn’t weak either.”

He had personally witnessed Gu Jiao’s skills and knew she was a terrifying expert capable of defeating Han Ye, and according to the intelligence they had gathered, the young general at her side should be the Martial Marquis Xuanyuan Xi.

Neither of them was someone ordinary.

If the two of them were to make a move against Liu Yisheng inside the tent, he would not have time to rush in and save him.

“I know.” Liu Yisheng said lightly, his tone calm and unruffled.

Since Liu Yisheng had already said so, Jun Xiuhan could only withdraw for the time being.

Only one personal attendant remained inside the tent.

“Ah Nu?” Gu Jiao looked toward him.

Liu Yisheng was in particularly good spirits, his eyes full of smiles, as he said, “Yes, you still remember. Ah Nu, do you remember Young Miss Gu?”

Ah Nu nodded and cupped his hands toward Gu Jiao in salute.

He was a mute servant and could not speak.

He had grown taller and more mature as well, now a steady and reliable guard.

Gu Jiao returned the greeting with a nod.

“It’s Jing Kong, right?” Liu Yisheng then looked toward Xuanyuan Xi beside Gu Jiao.

Xuanyuan Xi widened his eyes. “Huh, you know me?”

Liu Yisheng said frankly, “We’ve met before, have you forgotten?”

Realization dawned on Xuanyuan Xi. “Ah, the paihuazi incident with Brother Ming’er! I remember now! You were the one who saved us!”

Liu Yisheng said gently, “And after that, over these past few years, I also looked into you a little.”

Xuanyuan Xi said, “Oh.”

He did not ask why Liu Yisheng had investigated him.

Nine years ago, when Gu Jiao had gone to see Liu Yisheng off, she had played a piece on the guqin for him in a pavilion, and that time she had brought Jing Kong along as well.

Jing Kong, curious, had asked a bit about Liu Yisheng and only then learned that he and Gu Jiao were friends.

After returning, he had even bragged to his bad brother-in-law that JiaoJiao and Brother Liu Yisheng’s guqin harmony was perfect and unmatched, which had left his bad brother-in-law thoroughly jealous.

Only later, after he had grown up, did he finally understand that “guqin harmony” was not used in that way at all, not to mention that what Liu Yisheng had played together with JiaoJiao back then on the carriage had been a flute.

Xuanyuan Xi curled his lips and said, “We actually came here to beat you up, but you kind of… don’t seem very beatable.”

The main reason was that he did not sense any killing intent or ill will toward JiaoJiao from Liu Yisheng at all.

He smiled faintly, seemingly unbothered by Xuanyuan Xi’s bluntness, then walked over to the low table, knelt down to sit properly, and asked the two of them, “Would you like some tea?”

Xuanyuan Xi did not want tea, as he was busy curiously surveying the weapons and books inside the tent.

“Feel free to look.” Liu Yisheng said gently.

Xuanyuan Xi glanced at Gu Jiao, and only after seeing Gu Jiao nod did he go over to flip through the books and examine the weapons.

Gu Jiao knelt down and sat across from Liu Yisheng.

Liu Yisheng lifted the kettle of boiling water from the brazier within easy reach and brewed three cups of tea.

Gu Jiao asked, “How did you and Jun Xiuhan come to know each other?”

Liu Yisheng said, “His mother was from the State of Zhao, and before his father brought her back to the State of Yan, she lived in the same alley as I did, so we crossed paths a few times, and once, when he fainted from hunger, it was I who carried him home on my back.”

Gu Jiao suddenly understood. “No wonder.”

Liu Yisheng handed the tea to Gu Jiao and continued, “His family circumstances in the State of Yan were not very good either, but fortunately he himself was driven enough and managed to test into Canaan Academy, and what came after, you can more or less guess; I ran into him by chance, learned about you from his mouth, and guessed that this ‘Xiao Liulang’ was you.”

Gu Jiao lifted her teacup. “During the Black Wind Cavalry Commander selection, he helped me and said it was to repay someone’s favor.”

Liu Yisheng withdrew his hand, paused for a moment, and said, “That, I truly did not know.”

Gu Jiao looked at him. “How have you been living these past years?”

Liu Yisheng smiled faintly. “As you can see, neither good nor bad. What about you, are you living well?”

Gu Jiao answered honestly, “Very well, I like it very much.”

She liked her current life, and she liked everything she had experienced.

Liu Yisheng smiled, both relieved and bitter at the same time. “Does he treat you well?”

Gu Jiao froze for a moment. “My husband? He treats me extremely well.”

Liu Yisheng lowered his eyes and took a sip of tea. “That’s good.”

“You have hatred in your heart?” Gu Jiao asked bluntly.

Liu Yisheng tightened his grip on the teacup, his gaze fixed on the tea leaves floating inside, and after a long while he said in a low voice, “Yes, the imperial family of the State of Zhao slaughtered my entire Liu Family, how could I not hate?”

“I lived like a dog, letting people trample on me at will, anyone could step on me whenever they pleased.”

“Whenever someone felt dissatisfied, they could vent their anger on me and on the people around me.”

“No, that’s not quite right, I didn’t really have anyone around me either, just one old nanny and a mute servant I bought halfway through the road.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
