Chapter 1718: Chapter 1719: Everything Explained Clearly
The words “spoiled” and “outsiders” made him extremely happy.
“I’m just someone who happened to know Mrs. Jiang and the others. Our relationship isn’t even close enough to call friends, so I couldn’t possibly ask them to stand up for me. That’s why I went to Chu Garden and came back.”
Li Shengxiao’s throat was burning, his voice was rough and unclear, “You still haven’t said why you didn’t tell me.”
Did she not?
She thought she had already explained it clearly in a subtle way.
Either he didn’t understand her subtle hints, or he wanted to hear her say it directly.
Rong Yan smiled, pressing her forehead against his solid chest. In a gentle tone, she said, “Shengxiao, you’re different from them. You are my husband, the person whose name shares the same household register as mine. Not telling you doesn’t mean I’m distant from you. I didn’t tell you because, first, I didn’t think Chu Xi’s little tricks behind my back could force me into a corner. If I ever reached that point, I’d ask for your help without you even needing to say a word. Second, since I already declared that I wanted to come to you as fast as I could and not keep you waiting too long, how could I call for your help over some minor setbacks? So these are the two reasons why I didn’t ask for your help or tell you about Chu Xi’s matters.”
“Where did your thoughts wander off to?”
Li Shengxiao raised his eyelids and suddenly spoke coolly after looking past her, “The water in the pot has been boiling for a long time. What are you cooking? If you don’t put it in soon, the water will boil dry.”
“Oh no! I forgot there was water boiling on the stove!” Rong Yan indeed got distracted, leaving him behind, and hurried to check the boiling water.
Earlier, she had placed dumplings beside the pot, intending to toss them in once the water boiled. But she had gotten caught up in talking to him and completely forgot about it.
Now, the row of dumpling wrappers closest to the pot had been steamed so much by the water vapor that they turned transparent, revealing the filling inside.
Rong Yan quickly tossed the dumplings into the pot one by one.
Once the dumplings hit the water with a splash, she found a bowl from the cupboard, poured some pork rib soup into it, and sprinkled some freshly chopped scallions on top.
Lastly, she put a small spoonful of Sichuan pepper powder only into his bowl.
Li Shengxiao didn’t like spicy food but really enjoyed the numbing sensation. Meanwhile, she and Little Baby had more of a northern palate and couldn’t quite appreciate the flavor of Sichuan pepper.
She added the Sichuan pepper into that one bowl, and once everything was done, the dumplings in the pot began to swirl around in the boiling water.
Once the dumplings float, they’re cooked.
Rong Yan first scooped a bowl for Lin Zhiya, then another for Little Baby, all the while mumbling, “Luckily, I cleverly prepared a portion for you. Otherwise, you’d have nothing to eat, coming back unexpectedly like this. These dumplings were made by me, Mrs. Lin, and Little Baby together. Each one was supposed to be pretty, but you distracted me while I was talking to you, so one row of dumplings got softened by the steam. As punishment for being the culprit, all the ones with broken skins are going into your bowl!”
Despite her words, while serving, she placed most of the dumplings with broken skins into her own bowl.
Li Shengxiao also noticed her little act but didn’t say anything.
When Rong Yan asked him to help carry the bowls out so everyone could sit at the table to eat, he suddenly picked up two plump and complete dumplings and placed them in Rong Yan’s bowl.
Then he naturally took two broken ones, with only dumpling skins left, from Rong Yan’s bowl into his own.
