Diary of a Dead Wizard

Chapter 598: Dangerous Caverns

In Wind Sprite’s maze-like caverns, Saul and the Old Witch were restraining their mental power and magical power as much as possible for concealment.

This meant they often only discovered enemies when they appeared right in front of them.

After being startled by a pair of arms that suddenly emerged from the soil, the Old Witch reacted quickly and immediately condensed a small air shield in front of herself.

Then the arms and their attached body completely emerged from the wall.

“Magical golem?” Saul was stunned.

This thing was somewhat high-tech—a magically synthesized puppet with certain intelligence. But such things were rare on the Stat Continent. Saul only knew after reading Mentor Gorsa’s collection that magical golems were especially common on the Iskaper Continent, particularly in Sky City.

Moreover, due to internal design being magically encrypted and very strict control over external sales, it was extremely difficult for wizards from other factions to purchase such magical golems.

The magical golem before them had a wolf head and human body. When its eyes looked at Saul and the Old Witch, they flashed with brilliance that ordinary puppets didn’t possess.

Due to its powerful concealment, neither of them had detected the wolf-headed golem’s presence before it suddenly attacked the Old Witch.

Saul took advantage of the wolf-headed golem focusing its attack on the Old Witch and immediately condensed a black blade to slash across the wolf head’s neck.

However, the black blade that could easily cut through human heads was extremely sluggish when cutting the golem.

Saul could only force it half a palm’s distance before the black blade couldn’t penetrate further, then the magical power dissipated and disappeared.

He condensed another larger black blade and shot it at the golem, but this time the black blade only penetrated less than a centimeter into the opponent’s body before getting stuck.

“Magical golems can adjust their characteristics based on attacks. If you can’t destroy its core in one strike, the second attack’s effectiveness will be greatly reduced.”

The Old Witch showed her teeth in frustration. “My wind blades probably aren’t even as sharp as your black blades. This is troublesome.”

The Old Witch wasn’t afraid of the magical golem, but if she stayed to deal with it, there would be no one to resist Wind Sprite inside.

Saul looked at the magical golem that had turned to counterattack him after his several strikes, his heart stirring with desire.

“I really want to take this golem home!”

But this wasn’t the time to be greedy. The moment the magical golem lunged at Saul, a transparent humanoid figure suddenly emerged from his body, then quickly covered itself with silver in mid-air and collided violently with the magical golem.

“Bang!”

The tremendous sound echoed far through the passage. Saul thought silently, “Now Wind Sprite has definitely discovered us. But that’s fine—we need the Old Witch to draw her away anyway.”

Thinking this, Saul no longer cared that Herman, dressed entirely in silver, would create loud noises while fighting the magical golem.

But Herman only excelled at blunt attacks and was somewhat helpless against the magical golem that could switch between high strength and high toughness.

However, the magical golem, which was very fast but not very agile in turning, couldn’t catch Herman either.

It simply couldn’t catch the silver shadow darting around above and below.

“Let’s go. Leave this to Herman.”

Saul took another look at the magical golem and said to the Old Witch.

The Old Witch quickly found an opening, ran to Saul’s side, and the two continued deeper.

However, they hadn’t gone far this time when rustling sounds came from ahead.

The Old Witch, who was responsible for drawing Wind Sprite away, no longer hid her mental power.

She turned her head to listen for a moment, then said with certainty, “Poison spiders, many of them. Each about palm-sized, but very venomous. Even first-rank wizards will die if injected with too much venom.”

Saul’s heart stirred. “Sensing enemies’ shape and size is normal, but even knowing their toxicity…”

The Old Witch noticed Saul’s investigating gaze and rolled her eyes. “What are you looking at? I’ve been bitten before! But my perfect body isn’t afraid of these spiders anymore.”

As they spoke, the first spider had already appeared before them.

This spider was indeed as the Old Witch described—only palm-sized, crystal white all over, like something carved from ice and jade.

Though the little spider looked cute, upon seeing enemies it immediately showed a pair of crimson eyes, looking at Saul and the Old Witch like seeing two large chunks of meat.

Then a large mass of pearly white spiders ran out from the shadows—densely packed, overwhelming. At first glance there were two to three hundred.

Combined with the cave being less than three meters wide with little maneuvering space, seeing so many little spiders in such a confined environment, no matter how cute they looked, truly made one’s scalp tingle!

“Let’s fly up and rush through,” Saul suggested.

Even if spiders might fall on them as they flew through, as long as they were covered with spell armor, they could ensure they wouldn’t be bitten for a short time.

“No, we still need to deal with them here. Otherwise, if they follow us in and we encounter Wind Sprite, we’ll have to watch out for these spiders while dealing with Wind Sprite…”

The Old Witch worried about being attacked from both sides. Clearly she wasn’t truly completely unafraid of these spiders’ venom.

Even if the perfect body could self-heal, if too much venom accumulated, it might still affect her combat.

But Saul grabbed the Old Witch’s arm and smiled. “Then let’s fly through and have someone else block these spiders.”

The Old Witch realized Saul was referring to the consciousness bodies and Soul-Devouring Mire inside him.

For this outing, Saul had truly brought everyone. If someone attacked his base now, the wizard tower could only close itself and pray it wouldn’t be breached before Saul’s return.

The Old Witch also grabbed Saul’s arm, and they flew up together as the Old Witch’s wind shield covered both of them.

When they flew over the passage filled with pearly white spiders, despite their high speed, spiders still fell on them like dumplings.

But because the wind shield’s protection was very strong, those spiders temporarily couldn’t touch their bodies.

However, their toxicity was indeed very strong—red spots soon appeared on the wind shield.

These little creatures’ venom could even corrode magical power!

Fortunately, they quickly passed through the cave with the densest spider concentration and landed on an open area.

Then the Old Witch raised several small whirlwinds around her body to sweep away the little spiders on the wind shield.

As soon as these little spiders landed on the stones, their eight legs immediately stuck firmly to the rocks, bodies pressed low, and they could no longer be blown away by wind.

Then the wind shield was withdrawn, and a vine-like black tentacle dropped from behind Saul’s neck to the ground.

The earth and surrounding stone walls and ceiling immediately turned black and softened. In just a few breaths, they transformed from hard rock into moist, soft soil.

Numerous black tentacles emerged from the walls that had become swamp, all opening shark-like mouths and lunging at the charging little spiders.

But in terms of numbers alone, Little Algae still wasn’t a match for these little spiders. Some spiders, after avoiding the tentacles’ bites, would climb onto them and gnaw at the tentacles’ bodies.

Sharp mouthparts combined with corrosive venom quickly bit off the tentacles’ tips.

Seeing this, Saul had to release another consciousness body—Ann.

“Ann, you and Little Algae hold the line here. It will protect you from spider bites while you focus on clearing spiders that land on it.”

“Yes, Master.” Ann acknowledged and immediately stepped forward to join the battle.

At this moment, powerful mental pressure emanated from deep within the cave. Saul and the Old Witch almost simultaneously staggered and nearly fell.

That was mental pressure belonging to a third-rank wizard.

The Old Witch’s expression changed.

“Didn’t you say Wind Sprite was finished?”

Saul immediately glanced at the diary, then smiled slightly. “Only pressure but no person in sight—isn’t that exactly what being finished looks like?”
