Chapter 852: Chapter 30: Death’s Graveyard
After passing through the eerie corridor filled with blasphemer golems, the path ahead opened up suddenly. But the sight that met their eyes was even more spine-chilling than the previous corridor filled with alchemy monsters.
This was an incomparably vast, seemingly boundless graveyard.
The gray sky hung low, with no sun, moon, or stars in sight. Only a faint gleam barely illuminated this deathly silent land.
Everywhere they looked were tilted, broken tombstones, densely embedded in the charred, muddy ground like rotting teeth. Some twisted, dried-up, leafless bizarre trees were scattered around, their branches like struggling ghostly claws reaching out to the sky.
The air was thick with an overpowering stench of rot and corpses, mixed with a blasphemous aura infused with the power of faith, which was nauseating.
However, the “deathly silence” of this graveyard was utterly shattered the moment Lynch and the others stepped in!
“Creak…”
“Ugh—aah—”
“Sss—”
The earth churned, tombstones toppled! Pale or decaying arms abruptly reached out from the graves, followed by countless skeletons, zombies, ghouls, and other undead creatures swarming out of every grave, flooding the entire graveyard like a tide emerging from the depths of hell!
Their eyes burned with ghostly green or pale soul fire, emitting all sorts of terrifying howls and scraping sounds.
More eerily, the surrounding withered bizarre trees had their dry branches extend and twist madly like living things, transforming into countless black vines with thorns that emanated a scent of decay and death, entwining and stabbing towards Lynch and the others like venomous snakes from above and below!
These undead were far from the low-level beings in ordinary graves driven by negative energy. The energy fluctuations they emitted, even the weakest, reached the level of official wizards!
Among them, some skeletons had particularly solid soul fire in their eye sockets, with traces of unfinished decay magic rune marks on their bones; while those zombies, though decayed, moved with unusual swiftness, their twisted bulging muscles harboring explosive dark power.
Lynch’s gaze was as sharp as a hawk, instantly locking onto several zombies clad in tattered wizard robes. On their sleeves were faintly visible emblems of some long-extinct wizard families, the broken stars of the Starlight Family, the entwining thorns of the Tavendish Family…
“These are… the corpses of wizard families!” Lynch’s voice carried a tinge of suppressed shock and anger. He recognized those emblems, realizing that these undead were the ancestors or fallen members of the wizard families destroyed by the Freemasonry Church!
“Guardian” Gordon’s expression was exceedingly grave. He surveyed the sea of undead, speaking in a deep voice: “Erodion… he not only massacred these families but also collected their corpses here, conducting some kind of… forbidden desecration transformations! Judging by their twisted forms and abnormal power, it’s anything but natural!”
“Prophet” Meiweisi, with eyes that could perceive the essence, flashed a look of disgust and understanding: “It’s more than that. These undead’s bodies and fragments of souls have been forcefully infused with a rich, twisted power of faith!”
“This power of faith merged bizarrely with death energy, becoming the source driving them and bestowing them with greater power! This is indeed Erodion’s handiwork, a sinister ’experiment’ desecrating life and death!”
No more words were needed, as battle erupted instantly!
The tsunami of undead, carrying the scent of decay and death, launched a flooding assault against the few individuals! Skeleton warriors wielded bone blades infused with dark energy, zombies howled and lunged, ghouls flitted like specters in the shadows for sneak attacks, and those innumerable deadly black vines were everywhere!
Outside, in a rule domain, such an undead tide might be largely purified with a single thought. But here, the rules were forbidden, domains couldn’t unfold, and even mobilizing large-scale external energy became extremely difficult! Lynch and the others had to rely on their own reserves of magic power, soul power, and formidable physical strength to fight, and the sense of being restrained was exceedingly intense!
“Flame Slash!” Vanilla shouted crisply, wielding a flaming giant sword, enveloping waves of zombies and skeletons in scorching fighting qi sword aura, but immediately more undead filled the void left behind. The flames were greatly diminished due to interference from the dense death aura and faith evil power.
Vanessa’s figure flickered among the undead tide, her short sword precisely piercing skeletons’ eye sockets, severing zombie tendons, but there were simply too many enemies, and her void ability was limited, several times narrowly avoiding being submerged by the surging undead.
Gordon’s fists were like hammers, each swing smashing several undead into pieces. His heavy defense made it difficult for the tendrils to pierce through, yet the number of undead seemed endless, and he moved with the difficulty of an elephant stuck in a quagmire.
Meiweisi continuously cast various prophetic spells, briefly disrupting the undead’s attack rhythm or pointing out weak energy flow points to her companions. Yet, against this sheer overwhelming wave of numbers, her techniques seemed somewhat inadequate.
Dean Abbas deftly used space magic to constantly shift and deflect lethal attacks, trying to find the core or flaw of this graveyard.
Lynch wielded the Flame Demon Greatsword, each strike clearing large areas, the dark red sword aura unstoppable. But he frowned—this couldn’t go on. The undead were too numerous, and some force seemed to be continuously replenishing their numbers. Erodion’s ritual was just ahead, and they couldn’t be delayed here!
“We’ll be worn out this way!” Lynch parried a black tendril that lashed at him, cut down a ghoul lunging at him, and said in a deep voice, “Someone must break through!”
Dean Abbas instantly understood Lynch’s intention. He quickly cast a space extension, temporarily separating the undead ahead from those behind, creating a brief respite:
“Gordon, Meiweisi, and I will stay here to hold back these undead! Lynch, take Kong and Vanilla, you’re the fastest, charge forward! Find Erodion and interrupt the ritual! It’s the only hope!”
Gordon let out a low roar, once again taking the front line: “Go without worry! These blasphemous things won’t step a foot over the line!”
Meiweisi also nodded: “The stream of fate points to you, leave this place to us.”
No time for hesitation or politeness!
“Go!” Lynch yelled in a low voice, his soul power erupting suddenly, forcibly pushing forward through the undead tide! The Flame Demon Greatsword was like a fire storm blazing a path, slicing and burning all the undead and tendrils blocking the way!
Kong and Vanilla followed closely, one darting through gaps with extreme speed and agility, the other forcefully clearing the way with rampaging fighting spirit.
The three formed a sharp arrowhead, ignoring the constant attacks from the sides and behind, concentrating all their strength and focus on the front, launching a desperate charge toward the graveyard’s end!
The undead closed in behind them like a tide, but more were firmly held back by Abbas, Gordon, and Meiweisi, unleashing a continuous barrage of energy collisions and explosions.
After cutting down countless undead and breaking through many vine obstructions, bearing numerous additional wounds, Lynch and the others finally reached the end of this boundless graveyard.
Here, the tombs became sparse, the land more charred. And at the end, there wasn’t a wall or barrier but a large, deep, descending hole.
A broad, steep staircase hewn from rough black stone, like the throat of a giant beast, led deeper into the darkness. A far denser, purer, and more dangerous dark purple energy fluctuation, mixed with suffocating faith oppression and soul wailing, emanated continuously from the end of the staircase.
Lynch, Kong, and Vanilla exchanged a glance, seeing resolution in each other’s eyes. Without any hesitation, the three sped down this staircase leading to the final destination!
The staircase was long and winding, as if leading to the Earth’s core. The surrounding space was oppressively maddening, with only their hurried footsteps and the increasingly clear, heartbeat-like pulses of energy coming from below.
Finally, after passing the last section of stairs, the view before them abruptly widened!
They entered an unimaginably vast underground space. In the center of the space, an enormous dark purple crystal floated like a heart, pulsating slowly, with countless dark red energy conduits hanging down, spreading like a network of blood vessels throughout the space.
And directly underneath the crystal, on a rough black stone throne, sat a twisted figure connected to countless energy conduits and exuding a chilling aura, slowly lifting its head. Those eyes, filled with the wailing of billions of souls and extreme frenzy, pierced through the darkness and landed on the intruders.
Lynch’s gaze collided with it, his pupils suddenly contracting.
Erodion!
