"A Fire Spitter..." Rachel muttered, her face draining of all color as the terrible recognition settled over her like a suffocating blanket.
She could never mistake the distinctive pattern of destruction that lay before her—the precise circular blast area, the intense scorch marks radiating outward from the impact point, the way the reinforced door had been completely vaporized rather than simply damaged. This was exactly the same type of attack that had devastated the Municipal Office two months ago, the signature weapon of an enhanced infected creature that Ryan had shot down.
They had been naively foolish to assume that only one Fire Spitter existed in the entire region. The alien intelligence or whatever controlling these enhanced creatures clearly had access to multiple specimens, and now one of them had found their carefully fortified home.
The sound of rapid footsteps on the stairs announced Rebecca's arrival as she rushed down to investigate the source of the explosion, but Rachel immediately shouted a warning before her sister could expose herself to additional danger.
"Don't come down here, Rebecca! Stay upstairs!" Rachel shouted.
Without giving anyone time to question her assessment or argue with her decision, Rachel raised her voice to address everyone around.
"Everyone needs to pack their bags immediately and prepare to evacuate the house!" She said, her words echoing through their home.
The declaration sent shock waves of disbelief and panic through everyone within hearing range. This house had been their safe place for two months now, the one place in their dangerous world where they felt safe and protected. The idea of abandoning it seemed almost incomprehensible.
"Are we really leaving the house?" Daisy asked in stunned disbelief.
Rachel nodded, pointing toward the gaping hole where their reinforced entrance had been just minutes earlier. "Infected creatures will be swarming through that opening within minutes, and the Fire Spitter will continue targeting our building until it's completely destroyed. We have no choice but to evacuate immediately."
The urgency in her voice finally broke through their initial shock and disbelief. She began rattling off specific orders to them since they were struggling to move, all reeling in shock.
"Daisy, I need you to go to the garden immediately and harvest everything you can carry—potatoes, tomatoes, herbs, anything that might keep us fed during the next few days. Take trash bags and fill them as quickly as possible."
She turned her attention to the others who were gathering at the top of the stairs, their faces pale with growing understanding of how desperate their situation had become.
"Everyone else needs to pack travel bags with essential clothing—not too much, just what you can carry while moving quickly. Focus on gathering food supplies, water containers, medical supplies, and weapons. We're going to be on the move indefinitely."
The group scattered right after, understanding that their survival now depended on their ability to organize and evacuate faster than their enemies could swarm them. Daisy, Elena, Alisha, Cindy, and Rebecca rushed back to their rooms, grabbing whatever bags and containers they could find while trying to decide which possessions were essential enough to justify their weight.
Liu Mei, who had been in her room adjacent to the living room, looked at the destruction with obvious horror before also rushing to gather her belongings.
Rachel remained in the living room, frantically packing canned food, water bottles, and other supplies that would be crucial for their survival as refugees. Her enhanced Dullahan senses were constantly monitoring their surroundings for signs of additional attacks or approaching threats.
Rebecca appeared at the bottom of the stairs with her bag already packed and her clothing changed to outdoor gear.
"I'll help you with the supply packing," Rebecca said, but Rachel immediately shook her head with vehement disagreement.
"You shouldn't stay down here where you're exposed to additional attacks, Rebecca! Go help Elena get one of our vehicles started and loaded with supplies so we can leave this area as quickly as possible."
But Rebecca frowned shaking her head. "I'm not leaving you down here alone to face whatever's coming next! We stick together, especially now."
Before Rachel could argue further, her enhanced senses suddenly screamed warnings that made every hair on her body stand on end. She stiffened with alarm, her supernatural awareness detecting the distinctive energy signature that preceded another Fire Spitter attack.
Her Dullahan Senses had grown quite strong capable of feeling danger like Ryan could.
Without hesitation, Rachel sprinted into the center of the living room, positioning herself between the destroyed entrance and the rest of the group. Through the gaping hole that had been their front door, she could see movement in the darkness beyond—something large preparing to launch another devastating assault on their home.
The small fireball that emerged from the shadows grew exponentially larger as it traveled toward them. The projectile expanded from the size of a baseball to something approaching the dimensions of a beach ball, trailing fire and destructive energy that would incinerate everything in its path.
Rachel immediately activated her barrier ability, channeling her enhanced Dullahan powers into a massive crimson energy field that materialized between the approaching fireball and her family. The barrier was larger and more solid than anything she'd ever created before, desperation and protective instincts driving her to exceed her normal limitations.
The fireball struck her barrier with tremendous force, creating a collision of energies that lit up the entire living room with brilliant flashes of red and orange light. The impact sent shock waves through the house that rattled windows and shook the foundations, while Rachel herself was pushed backward several meters by the sheer power of the attack.
Her barrier held for crucial seconds, absorbing and dispersing the worst of the Fire Spitter's assault, but the strain was enormous. Cracks appeared across the energy field like spider webs, spreading rapidly until the entire construct finally shattered into fragments of dissipating light.
Daisy, who had been rushing toward the garden to begin harvesting their emergency food supplies, witnessed the entire supernatural display with wide eyes and an expression of complete shock. She had never seen anything like Rachel's barrier ability, and the reality of enhanced human capabilities was overwhelming her understanding of what should be possible.
"R…Rachel?!" Daisy exclaimed, falling backward onto her seat.
"Hurry up, Daisy!" Rachel shouted, not having time to explain or comfort her friend's shock at discovering her Dullahan ability "We need those vegetables, and we don't have much time before the next attack!"
"Y…yes…!!" Daisy nodded without further questions. She grabbed the largest trash bags she could find and began frantically harvesting potatoes, tomatoes, herbs, and anything else from their carefully tended garden that might sustain them during their uncertain future as refugees.
But as she worked with trembling hands, fear gripping her heart and making every movement feel clumsy and desperate, Daisy became aware of sounds coming from the garden's defensive perimeter that made her blood freeze with terror.
An infected creature had managed to climb over the wire barriers they'd installed to protect their crops, its decaying hands reaching toward her with obvious hostile intent.
Daisy fell backward in fear, her bag of precious vegetables scattering across the ground as she began crawling away from the approaching threat. She had never been in direct combat with infected creatures, having always relied on others for protection, and the reality of facing such danger alone was paralyzing her ability to think or move effectively.
But before the infected could reach her, Elena appeared with her crowbar raised in a powerful striking position. She brought the heavy metal tool down on the creature's skull with enhanced strength and precision, the impact sending the infected stumbling backward with enough force to give them time to escape.
"Take my hand, we need to move now!" Elena said urgently, reaching out to help Daisy back to her feet while keeping her weapon ready for additional threats.
Daisy grasped Elena's hand gratefully, using the support to stand while gathering as many scattered vegetables as she could carry. "T…Thank you…Elena…" She said tearing up.
"Just stay focused, Daisy. We protect each other," Elena replied simply, though her eyes were constantly scanning their surroundings for additional infected that might be approaching their position.
Meanwhile, inside the house, Cindy had rushed to Rachel's side to check on her condition after the devastating barrier technique she'd just performed. The effort had clearly taken a significant toll on Rachel's energy reserves, not because a single barrier took all her stamina but she had been caught off guard and had to summon quickly a powerful barrier out of nowhere.
"Are you alright, Rachel…?" Cindy asked with concern.
"I'm fine for now," Rachel replied, though her breathing was heavier than normal and sweat was beading on her forehead from the exertion. "But I can't absorb many more attacks like that one. My barriers aren't strong enough to stop multiple Fire Spitter assaults, and each one weakens me significantly."
Rebecca stared at her older sister with an expression of shock. The barrier ability Rachel had just demonstrated was something that belonged in fantasy stories rather than real life, but she'd witnessed it with her own eyes.
"Rachel, how did you do that?" Rebecca asked with a trembling voice.
But before Rachel could attempt to explain the nature of Dullahan virus enhancements or the complex circumstances that had led to her acquiring supernatural abilities, her enhanced senses detected preparation for another attack that would require immediate defensive action.
The Fire Spitter was charging another projectile, and this one felt even more powerful than the previous assault. Rachel could sense the energy building in the creature's modified biology, preparing to launch an attack that would probably destroy significant portions of their house even if she managed to intercept it.
"Everyone get upstairs immediately!" Rachel shouted, recognizing that the ground floor was no longer defensible against the level of destruction they were facing.
The group began a desperate rush toward the staircase, carrying whatever supplies and belongings they'd managed to gather during their frantic packing efforts. Elena and Daisy emerged from the garden area with bags of vegetables, while Alisha, Liu Mei followed suit.
But just as they began climbing toward what they hoped would be temporary safety on the second floor, the Fire Spitter's second major assault struck their house with devastating precision. Instead of targeting the ground floor again, the creature had apparently adjusted its aim to hit the upper level of their home, creating destruction that would cut off their escape routes and trap them in a burning building.
The fireball exploded against the upper floor with tremendous force, sending debris cascading down the stairwell and filling the air with smoke, dust, and the acrid smell of burning materials. The impact was so powerful that it shook the entire structure of their house, creating cracks in the walls and compromising the stability of their shelter.
Daisy, who had been climbing the stairs first in her haste to reach safety, nearly lost her footing as the explosion sent shock waves through the staircase. She stumbled backward, her arms windmilling as she tried to maintain her balance while surrounded by falling debris and choking smoke.
Elena reacted quickly, catching Daisy before she could fall down the stairs and potentially suffer serious injuries during their desperate evacuation attempt.
Looking around at the destruction surrounding them—the ground floor entrance completely destroyed, the upper floor now damaged and potentially unsafe, infected creatures approaching from multiple directions, and a Fire Spitter methodically demolishing their home—everyone in the group finally understood the full scope of the nightmare they were facing.
This wasn't just an attack they could repel and recover from. This was the complete destruction of everything they'd built and protected over two long careful months of survival and building…
But before anyone could suggest their next move or assess their remaining options, Rebecca's voice cut through the chaos with a scream of pure terror that made everyone's blood freeze.
"Rachel! Behind you!"
Rachel spun around to see what had triggered her sister's alarm, and found herself face-to-face with a massive infected creature that had somehow entered their house taking advantage of Rachel's dizziness after taking three attacks of the Fire Spitter. This wasn't a standard infected—it was something much larger, more muscular, and more obviously dangerous than the normal virus victims they'd learned to handle.
