Gun of Ashes

Chapter 62 Similar Things

The unusual alarm blared repeatedly inside the Perpetual Motion Pump, giving the feeling of a festival. Everyone rushed about, as if celebrating the Divine Birthday inside the pump, their faces masked with fear and tension.

Although trapped in a cage, this degree of confinement had no real effect on Lorenzo; it was just a formality. He curiously looked beyond the iron door, wondering what had broken containment this time.

Armor of Original Sin? Or perhaps some experimental Demon?

But before Lorenzo could think much further, a brief hallucination flashed before his eyes. He saw that scarlet figure strolling within the shattered [gap].

It was a difficult visual phenomenon to describe, but Lorenzo instinctively confirmed it was the [gap]… He walked between the [gaps].

Almost by reflex, a primal alarm warned Lorenzo from within. Without much thought, the dense, hard scale armor enveloped him, and he effortlessly tore open the confining iron cell.

Steel burst apart, electric sparks shimmered.

This time, the armor didn't fully encase Lorenzo, feeling significantly lighter compared to before, and this time Lorenzo wasn't caught off guard.

The familiar Winchester and Nail Sword were placed in the other corner of the cell, having been brought in along with Lorenzo.

Picking up these familiar weapons, Lorenzo swung the Nail Sword, easily opening the sealed door.

The entire corridor was bathed in blood-red light, resembling a twisted Hell, with the oppressive sound of gunfire constantly echoing.

Closing his eyes, unprecedented sensitivity expanded his perception to the maximum, and amidst the chaotic interference, Lorenzo gradually sensed the sources of erosion.

Upon reopening his eyes, a blazing white flame surged beneath them. Without hesitation, Lorenzo sprinted in the direction he sensed.

The Perpetual Motion Pump had already entered a lockdown state, all gates tightly shut. Lorenzo ran as if in a labyrinth, always finding a heavy door blocking his path at the end of a tunnel. He tried to open the doors, but the heavy steel was not so easily breached.

But just when things seemed hopeless, a door opened, and a scorching wind mixed with despairing erosion rushed towards him. Lorenzo tightened his grip on the Nail Sword, ready for the impending deadly battle, yet unexpectedly, it was only a group of wounded soldiers behind the door.

By their familiar attire, they were the security team.

Most were already injured, looking extremely weary, but the moment they saw Lorenzo, they still struggled to raise their guns, wary of the dangerous Demon Hunter.

"Relax, it's me."

Lorenzo released the armor's coverage, revealing his face.

"A Demon Hunter?"

One team member said slowly, but immediately another voice arose, filled with urgency.

"Mr. Holmes?"

The voice was a bit hoarse, coming from behind the team.

Looking beyond the group, Lorenzo saw the man lying on a makeshift stretcher.

"Joey?"

Ignoring the guns aimed at him, Lorenzo walked straight over, and then Joey's condition came into view.

Joey was in no good shape, with multiple wounds on his body, a burned left arm, and the entire person looked bloody, like he had been dragged out of a blood pool.

"What happened?"

Lorenzo asked anxiously. How could such a significant change occur in such a short time?

"A Demon, a demon broke containment; it's ridiculously strong, and we can't suppress it. Now it's roaming the lower levels."

Joey spoke while coughing up blood.

"It also released other demons from their containment cells, and now the lower levels are completely out of control."

"Then I'll handle it."

Lorenzo said, as hunting demons is precisely what a Demon Hunter does.

"No, wait for reinforcements. That demon… is very different. We are planning to set the entire containment area as a battlefield."

Joey shared the intel he knew, warning Lorenzo that going down now would be a sure death.

"Stay put, Joey. I need to confirm something."

Lorenzo shook his head, as if something was pushing him inevitably, that scarlet figure.

He was about to leave, but a bloodied hand grabbed him.

"This is the key to the door… also, remember to listen for the notifications."

The blood-stained item was thrust into Lorenzo's hands by Joey — a strangely shaped key and a familiar communicator.

"The entire lower level is isolated. You need to use the elevator shaft to go down; it's the safest way to infiltrate right now."

Joey gestured.

"Good luck, Mr. Holmes."

Watching Joey depart, the gate fell again, blocking the view.

It seemed that no one expected the demon to erupt at the core. From its inception, the Perpetual Motion Pump was heavily protected by military force, not to mention the vast industrial areas and the fortress-like Mechanical Institute. The only point of comprehensive invasion would be the large elevator leading to the surface, well-guarded by powerful firepower ensuring no silent entry was possible.

Lorenzo was puzzled by the cause of the chaos. Could a single,

runaway demon cause such waves? Any security personnel could easily kill off a bunch of demons with those terrifying weapons...

Different…

Lorenzo suddenly remembered Joey's warning, this demon was somewhat different, a different kind of demon.
