A surge of power sparks through my fingertips, strange and alive, and the world finally bleeds into color. The space between me and Amara shrinks; it no longer feels like she's a universe away.
I'm the one who decides fate. Not the system. Not some god. Me—Quill. If I want Amara, then I'll have her, even if it means tearing the universe apart. Maybe I don't even know if it's love yet, but I can't look into those eyes, shining with tears, and do nothing.
The quill slides into shape at my fingertips, beating like a star caught in my grip. I move my hand through the air, forcing my heart to follow, forcing my power to answer. I am the strongest. I am the author.
The world shudders with me as the strength I buried comes roaring back. Amara's eyes flare like suns, and in that brilliance, I see the loneliness I want to crush beneath my will.
"Stop, Quill! That's enough... leave me alone!" Her voice cuts sharp, mist flooding out of her like winter itself, but I know that's not what she really means. She wants me closer. She wants me to reach her. Call me insane, call me whatever, but my heart's screaming louder than her words.
"Never!" I scrawl into the air, warping the very laws of this place to bend toward me, to become mine. Even if it means rousing gods I should never provoke, I'll reach her.
Golden letters blaze where my strokes hang, flaring hotter until they bleed into crimson and carve themselves into existence. They don't fade. They cling to the air, and the world starts to splinter around them. Darkness rises, but through the cracks a surge of light pushes through walls I don't even understand.
"I will never leave you. You're my wife. I won't give up on you. For you, I'll do anything, destroy anything. Amara!" My voice shakes as the power builds. "This world, I'd give it to you. I'll be its king, and you'll be my queen. Like it or not, I'll bring that smile back to your face again!"
Her tears spill like tea from a cracked pot. Her smile rises, slow and trembling, as her body gathers flesh again, reshaping itself around that face I've missed. She reaches for me, and I reach back. The distance between us snaps away in an instant. My arm slides around her waist, hers around my neck. Our eyes lock. In this moment, while the world splits and crumbles around us, nothing else matters. I know I'm about to do something stupid, but I want her. No matter what.
"Come with me… back to the world of the living," I whisper, voice low against the chaos.
"Yes…" She nods, her smile warm as the sun. Death has no hold on her now; in this moment she looks like a goddess of life.
My fingers move, writing into the air:
{Return home}
I hold her tight and, in a blink, everything disappears. But the question claws at me. With Death gone, will the world's order collapse? No. My quill moves again:
{Amara shall guide the souls from the world of the living. She no longer needs to stay in the realm of the dead. She is my wife, and I am Death's husband.}
I finish the last stroke as the world blooms bright and warm around us. Birds chirp. Leaves rustle. A soft wind brushes my face… and then the gasps of my party reach my ears.
"Quill? How did you—?!" Powder nearly jumps out of his skin, eyes wide and wet. The emotional trauma I put these people through could probably get me a seat in hell. I roll my eyes at myself.
"Look who's back with another beauty," Anna calls from the side. Roxy doesn't even speak, she just clutches her arms like she's lost something, tears still fresh on her cheeks.
{Reset Powder's and Roxy's memories to the point before I left. Amara just arrived, and I went to greet her.}
I scribble in the air, and the two of them freeze for a moment.
"Huh? Why am I crying?" Roxy mutters, confused. Then her eyes flick to Amara, still silent, still studying me as I hold her hand. "Who's that bitch with my man?!" Her axe is already in her grip, ready for blood.
Here we go again. It makes me laugh.
But hey, even in all this chaos, it still smells like new memories and a new path forward, right, my dear readers? Let's see how this story plays out. Maybe one day, when we're all old and senile, we'll look back and laugh at how my wives used to fight over me. Hehehe. But seriously, jokes aside, thank you for sticking with my story even when it's a complete disaster.
From here on, I'm taking this journey more seriously. After I'm done powering up my friends, I'll head into the lands where law is just a dream, and there I'll build my empire. When the time comes… hehe… you'll see. Wouldn't want to spoil all of my dreams for you yet, would I?
Time slides by and the group settles down. Days later, I register Rewrite and we take on the same quest again. I haven't seen the hero's party since I restarted time, which gnaws at me, and the Book of Lore won't show me what Glorius is doing. It's as if he's slipped out of my control, or something else is interfering with my author powers. Could it be that system they call the Goddess? How is it different from mine? Why can't I touch it?
So many questions, so many holes to patch in this broken plot. But with them, my party, and with you, my readers, I'll be fine.
I can't wait to see what the future throws at me, but hopefully it's not another disaster. I don't know how many more of those I can handle before I break down, haha.
Thanks for reading, my dear readers. See you in the next chapter.
