Chapter 540: A Suicide

On a day when no one expected it, the news of Priest Morvain's suicide suddenly spread like a raging wave through the entire city and among the people.

At first, no one believed it, but then the death of the beloved priest was confirmed by the temple followers and some of the priests themselves, creating shock and turmoil throughout the city.

Moreover, soon after his death, handwritten notes by Priest Morvain began circulating among the people, letters about his past, letters that revealed the truth.

When people read them, their eyes widened, and they were so shocked they could barely believe what they were reading. But the fact that Priest Morvain had chosen to end his own life to prove his claims made them start to doubt, even if they didn't want to.

Was the Temple and the Grand Priest really deceiving everyone?

Were all those events that happened to the former Hero actually a trap and a setup?

Priest Morvain had held a deeply respected place in people's hearts, just slightly below the Grand Priest. Many even saw him as the next in line to become Grand Priest.

After all, Priest Morvain was one of the few priests who truly helped the people. He was always present among them, always there whenever anyone needed help.

He had even rebuilt the poor districts, and with his efforts, poverty had almost been eradicated from the city. It was clear that he truly had a special place in the hearts of the people.

And now, when they thought about it again, it all made sense. They realized all those acts of kindness Priest Morvain had done came from the guilt he had carried all along.

The more they thought about it, the more everything started to make sense.

"So the Grand Priest is really a fraud?"

"He truly betrayed the former Hero?"

"Shh! That's too horrible to say! We've trusted him all these years!"

Faith in their hearts began to waver. Some even lost it completely, especially those who had personally received the most kindness and support from Priest Morvain.

Of course, many still only doubted slightly—), they still believed in the Grand Priest and the Temple and refused to lose their faith so easily.

"These are just the Evil's schemes!"

"That's right! The Evil one wants to turn us against each other! People, stay alert and don't fall for such deception!"

Even so, aside from all that, Daniel's plan had worked perfectly. It truly caused division among the people and shook the faith of the entire city.

When the Grand Priest learned what had happened, his rage exploded. He nearly strangled several priests with his bare hands.

He was witnessing something he hadn't seen for years, the power of faith, the power of God itself, was rapidly declining.

As a result, the Temple's protective barrier had been seriously weakened. Even his own combat ability and that of the other priests had dropped drastically and continued to weaken by the second.

People were truly losing their faith!

"Damn it, damn it, damn it! Which bastard did this!?" the Grand Priest roared furiously, his voice shaking the hall.

The priests, trembling in fear, knelt down and didn't dare lift their heads. Terror filled their eyes. None of them could understand what had truly happened.

They couldn't comprehend why Morvain would suddenly commit suicide, nor how the news could have spread so fast.

"If I find that bastard, I'll tear him apart with my own hands!" the Grand Priest growled and slammed his fist into one of the pillars, cracking it.

Even he couldn't understand what was going on, how could such rumors spread so quickly, and how could his most trusted priest suddenly take his own life?

Of course, he didn't believe for a second that Morvain had committed suicide. In his mind, the man had definitely been murdered, and then the rumors were spread to shatter people's faith.

Yet he couldn't figure out who could possibly have enough power to kill one of his priests right under his nose without him noticing.

"Is this… the calamity?" he muttered to himself after finally calming down a bit.

What else could it be, other than that prophesied calamity, the one said to bring ruin to him and to the Temple itself?

He just couldn't understand who was truly behind it. Who had the power to kill so easily and manipulate the minds and hearts of the people like puppets?

It was as if an unseen, dark hand was operating behind the scenes, pulling every string to achieve its goals.

Even he couldn't help but feel a trace of fear at that thought.

"What should I do now? Suppress the rumors by force? No, with those letters out there, that would be useless," he muttered to himself, trying to think of a solution.

But before he could even come up with an idea, several of the temple followers suddenly rushed into the hall and fell to their knees.

"Sir, angry crowds have gathered at the temple gates! They're demanding answers! Many of them are even armed!" one of them reported nervously.

"What? The people came here?" the priests gasped in terror when they heard those words.

Their power came from the people, they couldn't harm or suppress them by force. If they did, they'd lose all their divine strength immediately.

That meant the people could practically do whatever they wanted to them, and that terrified the priests even more.

If this situation wasn't controlled soon, it could truly lead to disaster. They turned their eyes toward the Grand Priest, their only hope now.

The Grand Priest heard those words, frowned for a moment, then silently walked toward the temple's entrance.

When he stepped outside, he saw the angry crowd shouting and demanding answers. A dark feeling filled his heart, but he forced himself to suppress it for now.

"Grand Priest! You owe us an explanation!"

"Were Priest Morvain's words true? Was everything that happened to the former Hero just a trap?"

The Grand Priest, who was about to speak, fell silent when he heard those words. He genuinely didn't know what to say right now.

However, he suddenly sensed something from outside the city, and a smile appeared on his face. He hadn't expected such luck… maybe he could use it.

And then he smlied and said "My Dear ..."
