Damon did not wait for Hinata to leave. He excused himself and rushed over to Kate. Inside his mind, Blood Reign was fuming.
"My liege, I hate it. You should not be kneeling and bowing to these dogs, begging them for scraps. You were born to rule. All these so-called noble families should cower in your presence. Not demand things from you! Its just the life of a single human woman, why not simply let it go? The fallen angel is now doing much better and she is the more useful one after all."
Blood Reign wanted to continue talking but she abruptly froze. Even within the depth of his soul, the weapon spirit could suddenly feel an intense murderous aura. She knew that moment that she had crossed a line and closed her mouth.
Damon silently walked over to Kate who still showed no signs of improvement. He looked at the five vials in his hand and then at Arya who was sitting on the side and was busy with a cauldron. He threw one of the vials to her.
"Here take this. And this recipe. Do you think you can make the soul-mending potion better?"
He did not have much faith in the potion shared by the Valeross family but he did not have any other option at the moment. He could already tell that there was nothing poisonous within it, so he might as well give it a try.
Arya accepted the potion and wordlessly got to work. She was in her work mode and was completely serious. There was no more nervousness or indecisiveness in her behaviour. She moved as if she was in her own world and Damon let her do her thing.
With the four remaining potion bottles in his hands, he went over to Kate's side again and sat down on the bed. He gently propped her up and started feeding her all the potion he had left little by little.
At first he did not have much hope but slowly Kate started breathing better. Her blood flow became less sluggish. Even a faint stream of mana flow returned to her body.
Damon's eyes immediately lit up. He allowed himself a flicker of hope. Kate's skin began to lose its ashen pallor, a faint flush of warmth creeping back into her cheeks. Her fingers, limp and cold before, twitched slightly as if reaching for something in her sleep.
Damon's heart thudded heavily in his chest. He could feel it. Her soul was still fractured, but the potion was holding it together, buying time. Precious, fleeting time.
Damon brushed a strand of hair from Kate's forehead, his touch trembling. "Just some more time okay," he whispered. "Give me some more time and I will find something to heal you. I will turn the entire world if I have to. Just please give me some more time."
Damon hugged her closely and kissed her on the forehead. He then let her gently rest on the bed again when unexpectedly, Kate opened her mouth and mumbled. "Damon… its cold… don't leave me. Its very cold. I hate it."
Damon's heart clenched painfully. This was all because of him. If he had been stronger… He immediately pulled her into his arms, wrapping her in his warmth. "I'm here. You're not cold anymore, do you hear me? I won't leave you. Not now, not ever."
"What about her then?" A small smile appeared on Kate's face. "You love her too… don't you?"
Damon froze. "No. I don't. You are the only one that matters." Damon did not even hesitate before he answered her but it looked like Kate did not buy it.
"You are a bad liar." Kate smiled. "Its fine… you should be with her. Not me. I am weak and pathetic. She is the one strong enough to stand beside you. Not me. So choose her. I will be fine."
Damon pulled her closer and hugged her tightly. "Shut up and stop talking nonsense. I love you okay. I am not going anywhere. Nothing matters to me more than you do. I am sorry I was useless to let this happen to you but just give me this one chance. Nothing like this will ever happen again. Just save your strength and give me a little time. I will make all of this okay."
Kate smiled again, nuzzling happily against him. "I really don't care even if I die right now. Dying in your arms… feels like heaven."
"Shhhh… I asked you to shut up, didn't I?"
Kate smiled and remained silent. A few drops of tears spilled from her eyes which Damon quietly wiped away. In a few minutes, she drifted asleep.
For a long while, Damon didn't move. He sat there on the edge of the bed, his arms still around her fragile frame, listening to the faint rhythm of her breathing. He brushed his thumb against her cheek, tracing the warmth that had only just begun to return.
Many things ran in his mind. He then gently placed her on the bed and stood up to leave. "Arya, look after her. I will be back."
"I will be here. I can make more of this. Just give me some time and I will make sure she is doing better."
Damon only gave a nod and started walking outside. Immediately Varnyx rushed over to him. "My lord, there are many waiting to talk to you." The vampire gulped. "They are from the main families."
Damon had expected as much. Valeross family had done it quicker because they already knew what they wanted from him. The others simply took a little extra time. They all knew he needed something and they did not waste this opportunity.
"Alright. I will visit all of them." Damon walked towards the first chamber where the vampire from the Karaken family was waiting. Surprisingly, a Blood General was waiting for him. Not just any ordinary vampire.
"Tell me. To what do I owe this pleasure?"
