Abyss Sequence

Chapter 16: Confession

[I've returned to Crimson No.2.]

Sasa received the message from Yan Luo and sighed in relief.

Lately, the news about 'Yan Luo going crazy' has been trending. Although subsequent reports stated that Yan Luo has returned to normal, few paid attention; the general consensus online is that he's gone mad, sparking endless discussions.

A few days ago, Sasa briefly chatted with Yan Luo and confirmed he wasn't insane—just that his mental state wasn't great.

But honestly, when was Yan Luo's mental state ever good?

From the moment Sasa met him, he's always been a bit of a lunatic!

Sasa put down her work and typed to inquire Yan Luo: [How did it turn out? Did you find researchers who meet your criteria?]

Yan Luo replied swiftly: [No, but I've learned about Blue Star's past and the origin of the Abyss.]

Sasa: ???

Learned what?

Sasa stared at the message from Yan Luo, suddenly dumbfounded, as she knew nothing about these matters.

[What do you mean?] Sasa quickly asked Yan Luo.

Such topics couldn't be explained in a few moments; Yan Luo drove back to the villa, while Sasa emerged from the cellar.

Yan Luo removed his exoskeleton while explaining to Sasa what he had discovered.

Sasa's eyes widened; she never imagined Blue Star to have such a convoluted history.

"...Wait, if Mr. Qiu himself said they couldn't determine Blue Star's technological cap, then how did they know it was alien weaponry? And how did they know the Abyss is a meme?"

Sasa sharply caught the inconsistency in Yan Luo's words.

Upon hearing this, Yan Luo's brow furrowed, "He didn't tell me."

As Qiu Zhixue had his final moments, he only managed to tell Yan Luo about the origins of the Abyss and the technological limits. Once he finished, Qiu Zhixue closed his eyes forever.

To Qiu Zhixue, this world didn't belong to him; he was part of the era before the Lost Decade. He desperately longed to return to a time filled with ideals and hope.

But everything was gone, he could only look back in memory to the blue seas.

Sasa's throat tightened, unsure of what to say.

Qiu Zhixue probably knew much more, but didn't have the chance to share it.

After a prolonged silence, Sasa looked at Yan Luo and softly asked, "What about your plan to eliminate the Abyss..."

"The plan I made before is meaningless, so I went mad." Yan Luo candidly acknowledged his earlier insanity, "At that time, I felt I had nothing to live for, so I went outside the city to slaughter mutant creatures, and later I ran into a City-breaking Level mutant creature, nearly dying under its attacks. When I was critically injured, the 'Sky Eye System' identified the mutant and crushed it with orbital weaponry, allowing me to survive by chance."

Despite Yan Luo narrating briefly, Sasa could sense the harsh reality behind his words.

It was then that Sasa thought of some questions: "How did that mutant creature react to you? Did it find you appetizing like City-breaking Level Demons do?"

Yan Luo thought for a moment, uncertainly replied: "Probably not... I rushed at it, and it kicked me away rather than trying to eat me."

City-breaking Level Demons have a ravenous appetite for Yan Luo, yet City-breaking Level mutant creatures do not. What's the difference between them? Why are Demons drawn to Yan Luo?

Sasa thought if she could understand this, she might win this year's Abyss Ecology Gold Award.

Thinking about this, Sasa couldn't suppress the urge to smile.

"Yan Luo, I want to go into the Abyss with you; there are things I need to figure out!" Sasa requested Yen Luo.

Yan Luo glanced at Sasa but didn't immediately refuse.

"Why?"

Sasa pointed at Yan Luo and laughed, "Your blood and marrow; I want to test whether regular Demons are also attracted to them."

Yan Luo shook his head, "If that's all, I can bring the blood and marrow into the Abyss myself and record the experiment; no need for you to come along."

Sasa's physical ability was abysmal; running a few steps left her breathless. Even with an exoskeleton, she could barely manage a thousand meters.

If Yan Luo were chased by a City-breaking Level Demon, the bumpy ride in the car would make Sasa nauseous inside the exoskeleton.

Sasa insisted, "No, merely watching a recording won't clarify things; I need to enter the Abyss myself to get firsthand experimental data!"

Yan Luo pondered briefly, "If... in the Abyss, I'm chased by a City-breaking Level Demon, you could die there too. During a battle, it's tough for me to protect you."

Sasa had anticipated this.

"Don't worry!" Sasa patted her flat chest and laughed, "Recently I got my driver's license; if a Demon attacks me while you're fighting, I'll drive away and circle around until you've dealt with the enemy."

If that's the case, it might be feasible.

Yan Luo finally agreed to take Sasa into the Abyss, and she cheered immediately.

"When will you enter the Abyss next?" Sasa excitedly asked.

Yan Luo calculated the timeline, "Probably in two or three days; use this time to prepare, and I'll rent an armored vehicle."

As soon as he finished, Sasa contacted Li Jiongming, explaining her plans to enter the Abyss with Yan Luo for research. Predictably, she received approval.

However, there was a condition.

"The professor wants five hundred milliliters of your blood." Sasa looked at Yan Luo, pleadingly, nearly wagging her tail at him.

To this, Yan Luo was indifferent.

Because he planned to spread his blood within Crimson No.2 soon!

To confront an alien civilization, he couldn't do it alone. Yan Luo intended to reveal his blood's secret to some individuals, elevating them to his level, so they could stand with him.

Returning to Crimson No.2 covered in dust and travel fatigue, Yan Luo didn't plan to rest. After chatting with Sasa, he went to the basement to retrieve some items and drove away from the villa.

Yan Luo approached You Yifeng, who was quite surprised to see him.

You Yifeng invited Yan Luo inside, laughing, "I saw the news about you going crazy, but didn't believe it. With your strong willpower, how could you possibly go mad?"

"I did go mad; it just didn't last long," Yan Luo stated calmly.

You Yifeng gave Yan Luo an incredulous look, surprised he admitted going crazy.

With two cups of tea served by the robotic butler, You Yifeng leaned back on the couch, crossing his legs, "I know you always have strong motivations driving your actions. So tell me, what brings you here this time?"

Yan Luo said, "My blood can make individuals with Magic Power adaptability automatically gather Magic Power, accelerating the completion of Engraving."

The room fell silent after he spoke.

You Yifeng froze, his expression stuck in surprise, as if time had stopped were it not for the air conditioner still running.

"...What did you say?"

After a while, You Yifeng finally responded.

Yan Luo repeated his statement.

Immediately, You Yifeng inhaled sharply, staring wide-eyed at Yan Luo, puzzled, "Why did you tell me this? What exactly is your intention?"

You Yifeng's first thought wasn't greed but suspicion of Yan Luo's motives.

Hence, Yan Luo shared the story Qiu Zhixue had told him.

The more You Yifeng listened, the quieter he became. He almost pulled out a cigarette, but remembering he was at home, put it down and drank tea instead.

"You think you can't face alien civilizations on your own, so you've come to seek my help?" You Yifeng observed Yan Luo's emotionless eyes, dauntingly calm.

You Yifeng then shook his head, "No, I'm only the first person you approached; you'll find others too, won't you?"

"Correct."

Yan Luo said flatly, "All to eliminate the Abyss!"
