Abyss Sequence

Chapter 20: Serpent Eggs

Sasa called Yan Luo over to confirm that those two mimic snakes were not fighting, and suddenly became extremely excited.

The events on the Abyss side had long since spread to the research team at Lingquan University, where many team members were lamenting their inability to obtain a recording of the Demons mating and giving birth; other data would suffice if that were impossible.

However, those data were tightly held by the researchers on the Abyss side and were not released.

Yan Luo, an expert in Demon behavior, did not believe that the two mimic snakes were fighting, so there was a 95% chance they were not in combat.

"Recording, recording... Found it!"

Sasa excitedly searched through the saved footage of the mimic snakes and saw the scene of the two mimic snakes starting to mate, almost unable to suppress the surge of enthusiasm and joy inside her, nearly screaming out loud.

Fortunately, she managed to restrain her emotions well, avoiding making a loud noise to disturb the mimic snakes' mating.

Yan Luo watched with a serious expression at what was happening in the mimic snakes' storage box, beginning to ponder why Demons would mate and give birth.

After a moment of thought, Yan Luo had an epiphany and asked Sasa softly, "Sasa, why do you think Demons mate and give birth?"

Sasa was clenching her fists, eyes glued to the mimic snakes in the storage, and instinctively answered upon hearing Yan Luo's question, "Probably to pass on their mutated genes."

After speaking, Sasa herself was taken aback.

Every Demon has only one type of superpower, which is common knowledge.

But now, Demons can devour materials dropped by other Demons, acquiring traits from them, thereby gaining a second superpower.

If that's the case, could the Demons that have acquired a second superpower pass on both abilities to their offspring through reproduction?

In the storage box, one of the mimic snakes had evolved by ingesting Yan Luo's bone marrow. Sasa and Yan Luo did not dispose of it immediately but planned to observe its subsequent reactions and left it be.

They never expected this mimic snake to mate with another.

After it reproduces, will its offspring be able to inherit the already evolved abilities?

Thinking about this, Sasa's mind was in turmoil, almost unable to hold back her scream.

"I, I am the first to discover this..."

Sasa's voice trembled, almost unable to suppress her laughter.

She was the first researcher to observe Demons mating, and there was even a good chance that she would be the first to witness Demons giving birth. If she could also observe the newborn Demons inheriting the superpowers of the previous generation, her academic status could be described as 'soaring.'

Sasa was so excited she was almost in tears, her mind a blank, not knowing what to do.

But now she couldn't scream, couldn't laugh, no way to vent her inner excitement.

After thinking it over, Sasa suddenly turned and hugged Yan Luo tightly.

Yan Luo looked at Sasa puzzled, "What are you doing?"

"Let me hug you, or I won't be able to release my excitement..."

Saying this, Sasa suddenly remembered something, got up, and dashed to the front seat, jumped out after opening the car door.

"Ah—!"

Sasa stood on a hill and shouted loudly several times, then laughed heartily.

Yan Luo helplessly opened the car door from the other side, walked to Sasa's side, and frowned, "What are you doing?"

"Sorry, I'm just too excited, I really couldn't hold back." Sasa repeatedly apologized to Yan Luo, unable to suppress the smile on her face at all.

She could already imagine how her classmates, or even her mentor, would envy her.

Yan Luo shook his head, "After you're done venting, get back in the car, it's dangerous outside."

With that said, Yan Luo pulled out the shotgun from his waist and fired a shot at the empty ground beside them.

The earth-colored lizard that had sneaked up next to Sasa, ready to attack, was revealed by Yan Luo's shot. Just as it was about to fight back, a sharp blade descended, piercing through its head and pinning it to the ground.

Seeing this, Sasa's face turned pale, and she quickly opened the door and hid in the car.

Yan Luo bent down to pick up the materials dropped by the lizard, pulled the long knife out from the ground, carried it on his shoulder, and looked around warily.

Sasa's shouting had drawn several Demons; although they could drive away, Yan Luo didn't want to do so.

Sitting in the passenger seat, Sasa looked out the window, seeing Yan Luo, wielding a knife, rushing toward an attacking Demon with lingering fear.

It's fortunate that Yan Luo was quite skilled and able to protect her; otherwise, she would have caused a disaster.

Yan Luo fought the Demons outside the armored vehicle for nearly ten minutes, not allowing any Demon to approach it.

Sasa didn't watch the mimic snakes' mating process, sitting restlessly as she watched Yan Luo battle with those Demons, feeling quite regretful.

Yan Luo was an expert in Abyss hunting; she shouldn't have run outside to scream without consulting him, no matter how excited she was.

Following Yan Luo's movements with her eyes, Sasa saw him open the car door and return inside.

As Yan Luo started the armored vehicle to change locations, he reminded Sasa, "Next time, get my consent before doing something like this. This time only dangerous and deadly level Demons were attracted by you, and there weren't many deadly ones, or I would have been in huge trouble."

Sasa nodded repeatedly, indicating she understood.

Yan Luo drove the armored vehicle away from the original spot to avoid more Demon attacks.

Holding the steering wheel, Yan Luo glanced at Sasa sitting obediently in the passenger seat, shook his head, and said, "If you're okay, you can continue with your experiments, you're not needed here."

Yan Luo spoke bluntly, and because of that, Sasa breathed a sigh of relief.

At least from Yan Luo's words, it could be heard that he didn't blame her or wasn't that angry.

That's good... that's good...

Time continued to pass, and by the ninth day of Yan Luo and Sasa in the Abyss, the last batch of sleeping Demons had all awakened. Sasa operated the storage boxes, stimulating those Demons, identifying which of them had obtained a second superpower.

If they hadn't acquired a second superpower, Sasa would use the killing function of the storage box to eliminate them.

The rear half of the armored vehicle seemed to turn into a Demon zoo, with everything but the experiment table stored in Yan Luo's space box and the rest filled with storage boxes.

Although they distinguished which Demons had acquired a second superpower and fed and injected Yan Luo's bone marrow into them, Sasa's attention wasn't mostly on these Demons.

Now she was more focused on those two mimic snakes.

Sasa couldn't distinguish the gender of the two mimic snakes, so she had Yan Luo separate them into two storage boxes.

Because she didn't know if they were pregnant, Sasa had Yan Luo put them together in the same storage box at fixed times each day and separate them after a period.

Sasa had been closely observing these two mimic snakes, watching how long it would take for them to give birth.

Besides the mimic snakes, other Demons had also mated.

According to Sasa's observation, it seemed that only Demons who acquired a second superpower would mate with their own kind, which confirmed her earlier hypothesis.

Demons mate to pass on their abilities to their offspring.

But whether their offspring could inherit them 100% was still unknown.

Time quietly moved to the eleventh day after Yan Luo and Sasa entered the Abyss; on this day, Yan Luo drove away from the Remnant Iron Hill, reaching the territory of the Bone-Eroding Plain.

If it were before, Sasa would be extremely excited, but now all her attention was on those snake eggs.

Yes, 'snake eggs'!

Just a few days after the mimic snakes mated, the unaltered mimic snake laid several snake eggs.

Sasa didn't know what conditions were needed for the snake eggs to hatch, so she placed some warming items into the storage box.

However, the mimic snakes didn't use those items but coiled their bodies, placing the snake eggs in the middle.

Observing the mimic snakes' actions, Sasa thought for a moment and threw a few Magic Crystals into the box.

As she suspected, the snake eggs needed Magic Power to hatch.

As soon as Sasa put in the Magic Crystals, the mimic snake moved them over, placing them next to the snake eggs.

The Demon hatchlings needed the support of Magic Power to be born.

Sasa recorded this point and meticulously filmed it, recording the status of the snake eggs inside the storage box every few hours.

After merely two days, the snake eggs hatched.
