Abyss Sequence

Chapter 56: Capture

"I don't know."

Sasa sat across from the two policemen, repeating the words she had said countless times before.

Whenever the police asked her about Yan Luo, she would feign ignorance and repeat her previous statements over and over again.

The two policemen across from her were equally frustrated.

They exchanged a glance, and one of the officers slammed the table threateningly: "Don't think you can escape punishment by doing this. We've found enough evidence in your room to prove that you helped Yan Luo hide. Do you realize that this makes you an 'accomplice'?"

The other police officer gently advised, "Miss Sa, you might as well tell the truth. If you come clean about everything, we can consider it a form of voluntary surrender. We might conclude that you were deceived by Yan Luo, sparing you from any charges and not affecting your future."

Sasa shook her head with a smile, "Good cop, bad cop, huh? You won't scare me... Besides, how do you know this wasn't deliberately leaked by us?"

The officers were taken aback and quickly asked, "What do you mean by that? Could it be that Yan Luo is planning another murder? Are you just a diversion for him?"

Sasa shrugged, "It seems you still don't understand. What Yan Luo intends to do isn't kill, but rather, 'save people'."

"You must have been brainwashed by Yan Luo! Can't you see all the news about him killing people? He publicly killed a wealthy businessman!"

Sasa pursed her lips and said nothing.

Click!

At that moment, the interrogation room's door suddenly swung open. A policeman with a complex expression stood at the entrance and announced to the three people inside, "Uhm... the interrogation with Miss Sa ends here."

"Why?" The two policemen inside were incredulous. "Have they caught Yan Luo?"

The policeman at the door shook his head and sighed, "No, but they caught an Abyssal Believer..."

Abyssal... Believer?

They recognized the words individually, but when combined, they were baffling.

"What is that? The Abyss has believers?"

At this, Sasa interjected, "At first, I was puzzled too. Why would the Abyss have followers? But after some time, I stopped pondering it. Once I truly understand it, I might become an Abyssal Believer myself."

The two policemen immediately glanced at Sasa, detecting a different undertone in her words.

Reflecting on Sasa's earlier statement about 'Yan Luo saving people,' their hearts began to pound uneasily.

Regardless, the interrogation of Sasa was concluded. The policeman from the door stepped in, escorting Sasa out of the interrogation room and onto the police station's courtyard.

Most of the police from Crimson No.2 were gathered there, with the head of the criminal investigation team standing grimly in front of them all, glaring at the deputy director pinned to the ground by Wu Zechuan with a metal staff.

"What do you mean?" The captain asked Wu Zechuan, questioning him.

Wu Zechuan chuckled, "Oh, nothing. Just thought I'd show you the existence of 'Abyssal Believers.' By the way, remember that rampant demon tide nine years ago? That was orchestrated by Abyssal Believers. The then-president of the Hunter's Guild was an Abyssal Believer. He used devices capable of disrupting Engraving operations to interfere with the hunters at the front lines of the demon tide. As a result, those at the forefront died from demon attacks without protection, and the unexpected nature of the attack led to the tide's initial massive casualties, including several Sequence Three hunters. Had they survived, they might have lessened the crisis."

With that, Wu Zechuan sent the evidence to everyone's personal terminals.

Wen Chongwu and other retired hunters investigated these truths together. They even located the factory producing devices that disrupted Engraving operations, and followed the supply chain to find direct evidence linking these devices to Zheng Guoxian.

Because of this, to hold the hunters accountable, the Abyssal Believers decided to bring Zheng Guoxian down. The officials and retired hunters secretly battling the Abyssal Believers then seized the opportunity and took Zheng Guoxian down.

During his tenure, Zheng Guoxian planted his people among the police, hoping they'd assist him in the future. However, he underestimated the hunters' resistance, which ultimately led to his downfall.

Nevertheless, Zheng Guoxian's death doesn't mean that the people he installed can break free from the Abyssal Believers.

Not everyone among the Abyssal Believers genuinely believes in the Abyss. Many lower-ranked personnel were coerced into becoming accomplices because the Abyssal Believers held something over them.

The person pressed to the ground by Wu Zechuan belonged to this category.

Though an accomplice, he committed many wrongs and was undeserving of forgiveness.

After Zheng Guoxian's death, the Abyssal Believers changed their strategy and decided to use him as a replacement for Zheng Guoxian, making him their mole in Crimson No.2, allowing them to operate more covertly within it.

Wu Zechuan and his team spent years searching for hidden Abyssal Believers. They even suspected Daoist Li and the Li Family of being Abyssal Believers but never expected the Believers would refrain from placing their own in the Hunter's Guild this time.

After reviewing the cases Wu Zechuan and his team collected, likely committed by Abyssal Believers over the years, the captain's expression grew darker and darker. Finally, he couldn't help but shout at the deputy director: "Bai Sheng! Did you do all this? Including the murder of that criminal who attacked Yanluo Villa a few days ago—did you orchestrate that?"

Bai Sheng, pinned to the ground by Wu Zechuan, couldn't lift his head, unable to utter a word.

Seeing Bai Sheng's reaction, the captain clenched his fists.

He had always found it strange: why was the criminal's death quickly ruled an 'accidental death' by the department after choking? So, it was indeed someone's mischief.

Noticing that the captain seemed convinced, Wu Zechuan seized the moment, "The person Yan Luo publicly killed earlier was also an Abyssal Believer. Assaulting young girls was just one of the least conspicuous things he did. We only tried to take him down to let the Believers and other Lingquan City tycoons divide his assets, causing the She Family and She Wuyou's group to crumble. Unfortunately, She Wuyou nearly derailed our plans and almost escaped successfully.

"If Yan Luo hadn't killed that guy with a single slap, he would still be at large, continuing to serve the Abyssal Believers. Now, we need Bai Sheng's help to find his superior, and through that, establish a link between She Wuyou and the Abyssal Believers to clear Yan Luo's name."

The captain looked up, giving Wu Zechuan a profound glance.

Truly impressive for the head of the Mountain and River Warband; he played this nicely.

Facing the captain's gaze, Wu Zechuan smiled, "Oh, and we found someone possibly connected to the Abyssal Believers. He's from Celestial City. We, the Hunter's Guild, need to do business with Celestial City, so we can't touch him, but you can. His name is Shi Tianming. He used to have ties with the group that attacked Yan Luo. He's been burning up over this for days, so if you catch him, he might just spill everything he knows.

"You can report this as an achievement. Your superiors should know some related secrets. While they might not directly reward you, they'll express acknowledgment."

Wu Zechuan, once the head of the Mountain and River Warband, knew well that maintaining a team requires balanced rewards and punishments. Simply put, benefits must be distributed well.

He couldn't take all the advantages, at least not without sharing some with others, ensuring smoother cooperation among everyone.

With that, Wu Zechuan glanced at everyone present and said loudly, "I plan to make this matter known to everyone in Crimson No.2. I want people to understand who should bear responsibility for the failure nine years ago during the demon tide, and I want everyone in Crimson No.2 to know about the existence of 'Abyssal Believers'!"

Wu Zechuan knew he had just caught Bai Sheng without apprehending Bai Sheng's subordinates. Surely, a few Abyssal Believers were mixed among the crowd.

But that's okay. They couldn't report to a higher-level Believer over Bai Sheng.

If they decide to lay low, Wu Zechuan could let them go, but if they stir up trouble... then sorry, he would deal with them accordingly!
