Abyss Sequence

Chapter 70: Proactive Hunt for a City-breaking Level Demon

The Ghost Spiders are demons native to the Dark Forest, and they don't appear in other areas of the Crimson Abyss unless they're chasing prey beyond the Dark Forest. However, after a successful or failed hunt, they always return to the Dark Forest.

The environment of the Dark Forest is most suitable for the survival of Ghost Spiders, as towering trees are everywhere, making it easy for spider-type demons to weave webs.

Yan Luo took his weapon out of the Space Box, not wearing an exoskeleton, draped in a tactical vest filled with explosives and tactical tools.

Fully prepared, Yan Luo set down the Space Box, holding a thermal axe, and walked towards the area not far away, covered with webs.

Yan Luo first took out a burning grenade and threw it with force.

The burning grenade quickly fell into the web, but the shell, infused with the powerful kinetic energy applied by Yan Luo, instantly tore the web apart, flying towards the deeper parts of the web.

A moment later, a flame ignited in the nearly lightless dense forest, with light and heat erupting suddenly from the burning grenade, scorching the intricate web.

The Ghost Spider hidden in the deepest part of the web sensed something, hastily and silently speeding towards the direction of the burning grenade's explosion.

On the way, the Ghost Spider detected Yan Luo's presence, immediately accelerating its pace, charging at Yan Luo madly.

Yan Luo stood still, holding a stun grenade, presetting the fuse time to 'instant'.

As long as he pulled the pin and released the safety, the stun grenade would immediately go off.

The Ghost Spider is a semi-spiritual, semi-physical demon with traits of a spiritual entity, so physical attacks do little harm. However, with a thermal axe in Yan Luo's hand, when the temperature of the axe rises to its peak, it's akin to enchanting the axe blade with 'flame', making it twice as effective against Ghost Spiders.

Standing still, Yan Luo's eyes watched in all directions, and his ears listened from all directions. Nevertheless, the sensory abilities that were extremely useful against other demons seemed somewhat ineffective against Ghost Spiders.

Ghost Spiders make no sound in motion, not producing even the slightest noise.

Even the wind blowing through their bodies would pass directly through without any interaction.

No matter what sequence of Hunter, Ghost Spiders are rather troublesome demons, not to mention upon reaching the City-breaking Level, their originally fragile bodies become tougher, making them even harder to handle.

Although vision and hearing lost effectiveness, Yan Luo still had his intuition.

Suddenly, Yan Luo moved.

He abruptly sprung backward, releasing his five fingers holding the stun grenade, letting it drop to the ground.

Almost in the next second after Yan Luo jumped backward, the massive Ghost Spider descended from above, landing silently.

Simultaneously, the stun grenade exploded.

The flash and bang successfully interfered with the Ghost Spider, which originally intended to pounce forward immediately but halted due to the grenade explosion.

In that fleeting moment, Yan Luo stopped on his heels, rushing towards the Ghost Spider with his thermal axe.

Seeing a red-hot axe approaching, the Ghost Spider mimicked Yan Luo and jumped back.

But it never thought that Yan Luo's target wasn't its head or torso, but its legs!

The flexibility of the Ghost Spider largely depends on its eight legs. Now, with a single axe strike before it can fully jump away, Yan Luo chopped along the gap in one of its legs. Under the high-temperature blaze, Yan Luo severed one of the Ghost Spider's legs.

Yan Luo knew that the Ghost Spider reacted very quickly and had a quite hard shell, making it impossible to shatter it with a single axe strike, so he changed his approach.

When facing a City-breaking Level demon, one doesn't necessarily have to kill it immediately but rather, focus on weakening its combat power, then execute the killing blow.

Unlike dangerous or lethal level demons, City-breaking Level demons generally possess strong defense and life force, or reaction speed, making it impractical to kill with one hit.

By chopping off one leg of the Ghost Spider, Yan Luo caused a slight limp in its movements.

Despite losing a leg, the Ghost Spider still had seven legs to use, albeit awkwardly.

The Ghost Spider growled furiously and, upon landing, sprang to the side, scurrying up to the tree's crown at remarkable speed.

The dense foliage where the spider webs were located blocked out the sky, completely shadowing the area where Yan Luo stood, leaving him with no light.

Fortunately, his goggles had night vision and infrared capabilities, allowing his gaze to penetrate the overlapping leaves and catch glimpses of the light emitted from the Ghost Spider's body.

The Ghost Spider is not particularly known for its combat prowess in direct battle, more so for its infamous tactic of descending from above to kill prey.

This particular Ghost Spider on the tree crown seemed intent on repeating its old trick.

Thus, Yan Luo stood unmoving, seemingly alert to all directions.

For dealing with such a simple-minded creature as Ghost Spiders, there wasn't even a need to change strategies—just like before, standing openly and waiting for the Ghost Spider to attack.

The massive semi-spiritual demon treaded on the tree crown, failing to find an opportunity to leap down.

After hesitating for a while, the Ghost Spider felt it needed to make a move.

As the saying goes, strike first to gain the upper hand; thus, the Ghost Spider descended from above, aiming directly at Yan Luo's location.

Yan Luo happened to glance up, grinning: "Good timing!"

He had been thinking about how to lure the Ghost Spider down from the crown, not expecting it to jump down on its own.

Yan Luo once again jumped away, and the stun grenade he held followed suit and fell down.

Everything seemed to be a replay of Yan Luo's earlier tactic against the Ghost Spider, expecting the Ghost Spider to land and again be affected by the stun grenade.

But this time, the Ghost Spider learned its lesson, realizing Yan Luo jumped away and immediately shot silk from the rear of its body, pulling itself and preventing a ground fall.

Even so, the Ghost Spider was affected momentarily, almost falling out of the air.

At that moment, Yan Luo threw another projectile.

It was a burning grenade, as Yan Luo observed that the spider silk wasn't resilient enough to withstand high temperatures.

The grenade stuck on the silk connecting the Ghost Spider with a large tree.

The sudden burst of flames instantly severed the silk, causing the Ghost Spider to fall from mid-air.

Not needing special adjustments, the Ghost Spider landed lightly.

It roared at Yan Luo, then with seven legs, charged towards him.

Even with Yan Luo wielding a thermal axe, it did nothing to deter the Ghost Spider's determination to grow stronger.

The Ghost Spider rushed straight on, leaving no room for escape.

Faced with this, Yan Luo chuckled, then raised his thermal axe, striking down hard.

Just as Yan Luo swung his thermal axe, the Ghost Spider abruptly leaped from his front, landing beside him, without directly attacking Yan Luo. It arched its body, the abdomen circling under its torso, aiming its spinneret at Yan Luo, spraying silk instantly.

Yan Luo rolled towards the Ghost Spider's direction, neatly dodging the silk that had woven a net in mid-air.

The silk sprayed by the Ghost Spider fanned out in a radial pattern, making dodging possible only by closing in, not fleeing.

Because no matter which direction one runs, without running faster than the speed of flying silk, one would inevitably be ensnared by the web.

Yan Luo evaded the web's coverage, propping his elbow on the ground to push himself up.

Meanwhile, the Ghost Spider used its legs to support its body, recoiling its abdomen, its arched body returning to normal, opening its mouth to bite down on Yan Luo.

Yan Luo showed no fear, drawing another grenade from his tactical vest, pulling the pin, and tossing it into the Ghost Spider's mouth.

—It was a white phosphorus grenade!

The Ghost Spider instantly ignited, flames spreading through its mouth.

Although it didn't cause much damage to the Ghost Spider, the agony in its mouth prompted an involuntary howl.

Having thrown the white phosphorous grenade, Yan Luo kicked off the ground, sliding away, watching the Ghost Spider slam its head on the ground.

Even then, it couldn't alleviate its pain.

Seizing the opportunity, Yan Luo stood up and swung his axe.

With this strike, another leg of the Ghost Spider was severed.
