Abyss Sequence

Chapter 40: A History Wilder Than Legends

Although Yan Luo and You Yifeng were sitting in the dining hall of a restaurant discussing things, their voices were not loud, and the tables were spaced far apart, so no one except Jin Miaomiao could hear what they were saying.

Hearing You Yifeng's words, Yan Luo understood.

The method of creating a Saint was so 'simple' that he could do it; there was no reason why a Saint couldn't have been born during the lost decade.

Attack the strong with the weak, then defeat them in battle, and use the enemy's blood to nourish yourself to become a Saint.

Before the Engraving was unearthed, Blue Star was full of 'weaklings,' and there were always people who would find themselves at the end of their rope, always some who could exhaust themselves to defeat demons, and then become Saints with the support of Magic Power.

Knowing the conditions for the birth of a Saint, Yan Luo believed that there must be other Saints existing in this world.

He just never expected that there would be a Saint among the Abyssal Believers!

"The Abyss Watchers, as the name implies, are an organization dedicated to watching over the Abyss—after that person became a Saint, the military conducted much research on him and used his blood to create many Samurai, who were the prototype of the Abyss Watchers."

You Yifeng narrated the information he knew to Yan Luo: "After the establishment of the Abyss Watchers, they have been fighting against the Abyss, and their strong physique allows them to carry more ammunition, wield stronger firearms, and even engage demons in close combat. Later, when the Engraving was unearthed, that person also realized that Blue Star once had contact with the Abyss, but our ancestors cut off the connection with the Abyss.

"So, he defected!"

Jin Miaomiao instinctively asked, "Why?"

You Yifeng shot her a glance, making Jin Miaomiao somewhat nervous.

"No one knows why," You Yifeng shook his head, "Perhaps he believed Blue Star should not sever ties with the Abyss again, or maybe he was squeezed too much and harbored resentment towards the military. In any case, that person defected, taking a group of Samurai with him and escaping to the mountains and forests.

"They continued using the name 'Abyss Watchers' but began to sabotage Blue Star's attempts to eliminate the initial Abyss, and later somehow merged with another faction to become the 'Abyssal Believers.'

Why does You Yifeng know this?

It's simple; every Abyssal Believer who joins this faction must understand the origin of their faction to prove they are not the same as the Abyssal Believers from another faction.

Internally, they call themselves the 'Watcher Sect' and refer to the Abyssal Believers from the other faction as the 'Believer Sect' to make a distinction.

It seems that the Abyssal Believers of the Watcher Sect are merely more radical 'Abyssal Maintainers.'

Debates about whether to completely annihilate the Abyss constantly emerge online, and people divided into two factions: one, like Yan Luo, are determined to eradicate the Abyss, the 'Abyss Destroyers;' the other, the 'Abyssal Maintainers.'

They defend the Abyss from various angles.

Interestingly, most Abyssal Maintainers are city dwellers, while Hunters generally join the Abyss Destroyers.

Even though they also earn from the Abyss, the hunter's ultimate duty is to eliminate the Abyss.

Whenever the Abyss enters an irreversible 'extreme phase,' the Hunters organize a group to launch an Abyssal campaign, utterly annihilating an Abyss.

The Watcher Sect and Believer Sect share the belief of expanding the Abyss's influence, returning Blue Star to its state over eight thousand years ago.

That was when the Tower of Babel stood tall on the peak of Everest, and the divine power permeated the world.

The sinful serpent offered humanity the fruit symbolizing 'wisdom,' so humanity no longer followed the will of the gods, toppled the Tower of Babel, severed connections between humans across the world, and drove the faithful believers out of their former lands, leaving them to wander the world.

"According to the Abyss Watchers' research, it was our ancestor Fu Xi who proposed to completely sever the connection between Blue Star and the Abyss," mentioning this matter, You Yifeng's expression became complex.

In mythology, Fu Xi has a human head and a snake's body; though it seems far-fetched, it indeed aligns.

To know oneself and the enemy allows for a hundred battles without peril, so Yan Luo did not interrupt You Yifeng's narrative.

The Believer Sect wants to bring Blue Star back into the embrace of the gods, and by then, these most loyal believers will become the representatives of divine shepherds.

Just then, Yan Luo remembered something.

'Celestial City' is just how the people of the Eastern Domain refer to the city in outer space; in reality, in the Western and Northern Domains, that city has another name.

"Eden?" Yan Luo trembled slightly, "Celestial City was established by the Abyssal Believers?"

You Yifeng smiled, "It seems you figured it out too—indeed, Celestial City was funded by the Believer Sect, and even the construction plan of that city was proposed by them."

The Abyssal Believers knew hiding in the surface cities wasn't sustainable; as long as they remained on the surface, they'd be restrained by the United Government and unable to truly serve the gods.

Therefore, they proposed the construction plan of Celestial City and funded its development.

Over twenty years, they launched the assembly modules of Celestial City into outer space, assembling it into a space city capable of self-sustaining life for two hundred thousand people.

Since Blue Star Technology was isolated, and even in the lost decade, no real space strike force was developed, Celestial City could remain stable and unafraid of being attacked by the United Government.

Celestial City thus became a de facto lawless zone, where anyone who breaks the law on the surface can evade legal constraints by hiding within it.

This is the castle the Believer Sect built for themselves; only by hiding in Celestial City can they act with impunity on the surface without fear of being killed by the United Government.

"Therefore, in recent years, the Abyssal Believers have gradually become active; forty years ago, they wouldn't have taken any substantial action because if their existence were exposed, they would surely be dealt a heavy blow by the United Government."

Although he had left the Abyssal Believers, You Yifeng still scorned those of the Believer Sect.

The Watcher Sect and Believer Sect cooperate; the Watcher Sect mainly aims to maintain the Abyss's presence, and the failure of the Bright Silver Abyss campaign originated from them; the Believer Sect also wants the influence of the Abyss to keep expanding, in this they share common interests.

Thus, the Saint of the Watcher Sect would share their blood with the people of the Believer Sect.

"I see..."

Yan Luo finally understood why the trend of getting engraved spread among the wealthy.

This custom first spread among the wealthy in Celestial City, and subsequently, to mimic them and gain their favor, the rich on the surface also began practicing engraving.

And the root of this custom is that the leaders of the Believer Sect, after obtaining the Saint's Blood, could automatically absorb Magic Power, and even without entering the Abyss, their Engravings would grow, so they got engraved and gained extraordinary powers.

"I came here to tell you these things."

You Yifeng gave a bitter smile, "Originally, I planned to have Wu Zechuan relay the message to you, but he told me that these things must be explained by me personally to earn your trust. I suppose before this, he hadn't mentioned I was once an Abyssal Believer?"

Yan Luo nodded.

Wu Zechuan hadn't told him these things, even though Wu Zechuan had long learned many things from You Yifeng.

However, Wu Zechuan was right; only by having You Yifeng personally explain could he believe that You Yifeng had truly turned a new leaf.

As for why You Yifeng would turn a new leaf... the reason was simple; Yan Luo offered him more than the Abyssal Believers did.

You Yifeng had no leverage held against him by the Abyssal Believers; the Watcher Sect mainly secured his loyalty through interests, and since he hadn't done anything wrong, with Yan Luo's side providing more, why wouldn't he cooperate with Yan Luo?

In any case, the Watcher Sect's Saint would never give him bone marrow capable of increasing magic power adaptability.

Because in that person's eyes, he didn't deserve those things.
