The Runic Alchemist

Chapter 874: The Most Popular City in Mainland

Pages containing runic jet designs fluttered on his desk. Toph slept on the table under direct sunlight. Damian, however, was on the couch that faced the transparent air shield window. Overlooking the busy city.

What would becoming a follower of a prominent god mean for him? Will his unique status be changed forever to that of a normal one? What of that dead souls and demons thing?

He had to choose one god. Was he writing his own downfall by doing this?

If he didn't, it would be a direct violation of god's command. The three kingdoms he could fight against with his tools, but if the gods got involved.. if they took control of the people he cared for..

He was too powerless to do anything. Even though he could ascend to the fourth rank right now, it will only make him a bigger target. And the issue of manipulation will still be there.

No, he just needed to have faith in himself and believe that being a follower would not change him too much. Only after going through with this could he buy enough time to plan something substantial against these tyrants.

The potion that contained the Steelweaver's spell might shield people from the god's manipulation, but it was a theory too risky to test. A slight misstep and nothing would stop those bastards from ending him and Sanctuary. And besides, even if it worked, they could not live like that forever. He would be revealing his hands too soon.

Damian decided to trust his luck on this one. He was doing that a lot these days, he realized.

There was no way he could go to Sun God after that bastard's schemes of trying to eliminate Reize and himself for some unknown reason. Even the thought of associating his name with the Red Temple was disgusting, after all the crap they had done and still do in some parts of the mainland.

The elf goddess it was then.

The empire was enormous. Even more so after swallowing Dawnstar. Sea God did not tolerate Faerunia's border shortening; the new ruler might be troublesome, but it was just a single legendary . If he sided with Eldoris, the mainland would once again be balanced in power. Even without his tools and presence.

He decided to wait and watch till the very end of the three-day time limit.

Activating his receiver, Damian scrolled through the backlog of things he had to take care of as a Keeper. Calling his five assistants, he got to work. Many people visited him throughout the day for a myriad of reasons. The House of Lords went on as usual, so did dungeons, waygates, trades, and all other businesses.

The Sanctuary, after coming down from its high of celebration, was once again getting used to its normal bustling life. The merchants and nobles from all over the mainland travel here for the runic tools, dungeon materials, or simply to enjoy the flying metal platforms that drifted through the clouds like a floating fortress.

Pathfinders in large numbers were coming every day to test themselves in dungeons. Day after day, people were discovering ways to earn money or create something useful out of all the dungeons that were so easily available to them now. Information about the dungeons was the most sold and bought commodity in the market that never seemed to close.

Throughout the night, the street lamps stayed active, illuminating every street of the city. Large numbers of demand for the street lamp came every week from big merchants and noble names, but because of the liquid mana as its power source, Sanctuary did not list it in the shop or make enough to sell to others.

Damian skipped dinner. Both Sam and Lucian were acting up because of his last reckless plan. It barely happened, so he often forgot that even if monstrously powerful, they were still teenage children in mind.

He was too old to play along. If they were not happy with his decisions, so be it. His responsibility as a Keeper was to protect Sanctuary, not play babysitter.

After finishing his paperwork, Damian walked through the hallways of the Sanctum with Toph and Jacob. Reminding his people that he was here, looking over them, working alongside them, was one of the most overlooked yet essential duties as Keeper, he believed.

Sanctuary was not a traditional kingdom. He wasn't a king, simply a position in a system that can be changed.

Toph had been with him ever since he returned after the duel. The little dude must have sensed his near-death experience, so he was now unwilling to leave his side. Jacob had also left the runic lab to walk with them. He was creating his own runic items now. Of course, the use of runic mold was essential, and Jacob still could not control mana threads well enough to create a quality mana node system.

Damian noticed Reize and her sister eating freely in the mess hall. They were using the potion to appear as human Sanctum officials. His senses made no distinction with or without the potion though. This was one of the reasons why mundanes made the best spies using this potion.

Her sister, Yomi, had entered the night academy for adults. It started after dinner around 9.30 pm. Many adults wished to learn how to read, write, and some were even interested in other spell learning classes or scholarly classes, and other common skill classes. He had heard the pugilist technique classes were the most popular. Even middle-aged men and women wished to become a pathfinder.

Pugilist was the only class that had a small retry period for the starting ascension attempts. Spellswords and mages stretched to decades in just 2-3 attempts, first ranker attempts. While the pugilist first ranker trial was either a fight or a physical challenge. People could try over ten times in two decades. Gaining strength was essential, and techniques helped.

Damian ended his walk after returning to his floor. Jacob went back to his work, but Toph refused to let go. So he gave up and took him along to meet Landbreaker.
