When Sun Yan threw the corpse of the Suffering Bodhisattva on the floor of the great hall, the monks who had heard the news surrounded him, curiously examining this ancient Tibetan legend.
Now this legend has truly appeared before their eyes.
"So this is the Suffering Bodhisattva..." Master Sangji couldn't help but sigh deeply.
For many ordinary people, gods are lofty beings deserving of worship and respect.
But now, Sun Yan had personally slain a god, which means gods can bleed, gods can die.
A god that can die has already shed its original mysterious aura, and is no different from a powerful beast to humans.
This is an important step in breaking the shackles of thought.
"Master Sangji, what is this black water inside the Suffering Bodhisattva about? Why does my magical artifact become ineffective once it touches it?"
Sun Yan raised the Golden Halberd and asked in confusion.
Master Sangji took the Golden Halberd with his withered hand, examined it closely, and after a while said with a grim expression, "If I'm not mistaken, this is the filth of karmic obstacles."
"Karmic obstacles?" Sun Yan was taken aback.
Karmic obstacles refer to the sins that hinder the attainment of true enlightenment, symbolizing the root cause of a person's sins, the source of evil consequences and calamities.
Originally mentioned in the Southern Dynasties Liang Hui Jiao's "Biography of Eminent Monks: Translating Scriptures: Dharmakṣema": "Pondering further: 'It's just that my karmic obstacles haven't disappeared yet.'"
"Karma," in Sanskrit, is karman, which implies action. It refers to all behaviors created by humans through body, speech, and mind, whether good or bad, right or wrong.
The so-called "obstacle" is an obstruction; ignorance is the root of actions. Beings give birth to afflictions due to ignorance, making their thoughts impure; impure thoughts lead to laziness, laziness leads to lack of diligence, lack of diligence leads to failure in meditation, and absence of meditation leads to inability to attain concentration, thus deviating from the saintly path.
Therefore, afflictions can obstruct practitioners from transcending the mundane to the sacred.
Sun Yan's understanding of the concept of 'karmic obstacles' had mostly come from TV dramas; truly encountering it today was unexpected.
Master Sangji earnestly explained, "Former exorcists and demonic disciples passed it down, thus malevolent spirits enchant their hearts. In the near future, they live for nine lives, often more than a hundred generations, causing true practitioners to never escape demonic influences, and after death, they surely become demonic souls, losing right knowledge and falling into incessant hell. Therefore, malevolent spirits have the power to pollute; when practitioners come in contact, they lose all cultivation and mana, and magical artifacts become ineffective upon contact."
"Master Sangji, is there a way to remove these karmic obstacles?" Sun Yan hurriedly asked.
Since obtaining the Golden Halberd, he had used this magical artifact so smoothly and was reluctant to see anything happen to it.
Even if Sun Yan acquired a better magical artifact in the future, the Golden Halberd could still be handed down to Sosia and Elise for use.
If it lost its original power due to karmic obstacles, it would be a pity.
"In some of Tibet's great Buddhist temples, there exists the purest Lotus Spirit Water in the world, which can cleanse the filth of karmic obstacles. Unfortunately, our Vajra Temple is too small and does not have Lotus Spirit Water; otherwise, we could help you right now."
Returning the Golden Halberd to Sun Yan, Master Sangji shook his head helplessly.
"No problem, Master, as long as there is a way. Could you tell me where the nearest great Buddhist temple with Lotus Spirit Water is from the Vajra Temple?" Sun Yan asked.
"Walk eastward from the Vajra Temple for five hundred miles, then head in the direction of the sunset for another five hundred miles after seeing a three-peaked snowy mountain. There is a Lotus Temple, a great Buddhist temple established by Master Padmasambhava, and it can surely remove the power of these karmic obstacles.
But the road to the Lotus Temple is perilous and passes through a section of the Wolf Ridge Snow Gorge. If you plan to go there, I have something that can help you."
Master Sangji took out a yellowed beast fang, large enough to match the size of an adult's palm and the thickness of a wrist.
It was clear that this fang must have come from a ferocious beast in its lifetime.
"This is a Snow Tiger's fang, innately sacred, possessing exorcism and warding-off powers, capable of frightening away beasts and even dissuading ghosts from approaching you. With this, you can safely reach the Lotus Temple."
Sun Yan accepted it and asked, "Master, is this something you are lending or gifting to me?"
Master Sangji smiled faintly, "I'd like to make a trade with you. I'll give you the tiger's fang, and in return, you give me the corpse of the Suffering Bodhisattva, how about that?"
"Of course, there's no problem, but what do you want with this skeleton, Master?" Sun Yan accepted the fang and curiously asked.
"Though the Suffering Bodhisattva acted malevolently, its remains are of a divine nature. If crafted into a Golden Bodhisattva Statue and placed in the temple, receiving the monks' sermons for decades, it might generate extraordinary fortunes over the years. Our Vajra Temple is small, so acquiring a Bodhisattva's remains would be a blessing."
Master Sangji explained, not hiding the truth from Sun Yan.
Though the remains of the Suffering Bodhisattva are precious, without decades of effort, they cannot fully display their true effect.
For Sun Yan, keeping them by his side is useless, especially since he still has the task of finding Sosia and the others; how could he carry such a burden with him?
"I see, Master, may I inquire about one more thing?"
"Go ahead."
"Master, do you know where in Tibet one could find the Celestial Toad Relic?"
"What do you want with that?" Master Sangji asked in confusion. "In Tibet, each celestial toad is an extremely rare existence, let alone one that has listened to sermons for years and developed a Buddhist relic within its body; such a toad is an immeasurable treasure."
