Drawing Cards in the Middle Ages to Rise in Ranks

Chapter 158: Imperial Knight

Fabio did not attend the banquet.

Instead, he took his two nephews, retrieved chain armor and weapons maintained with oil from the armory, dressed himself neatly, and patrolled the manor.

"Uncle Fabio, why don't you take this opportunity to show off in front of the Lord?"

"Exactly, perhaps the Lord might recognize your talent and make you a Lord Knight? Then we could follow you as attendants."

The two nephews' faces were filled with excitement.

Losa's arrival disrupted the peace and monotony that had lingered in the manor for years.

At the very least, they had never seen such a beautiful noblewoman before.

The most common outsiders they saw were merchants who came to purchase wine.

Even just a glimpse from afar made them think there was no girl more beautiful in the world.

"It would be great if that beautiful lady took a liking to me, perhaps I could leap into nobility? It's all Uncle's fault for ruining my chance to show off my charm in front of her."

"Pfft, don't you use a puddle reflection?"

Fabio sternly told his overly lively nephews, "Shut up, this isn't the time for chatting."

"Uncle Fabio, you're too tense. A figure as grand as Lord Losa probably doesn't need us to protect him."

Fabio wanted to explain that this "Lord Losa" was different from the Hebron's Transjordan Count Reynard, but feared his nephews might speak recklessly again.

"In any case, don't entertain such fantasies."

Fabio said gravely, "In the noble world, the end for commoners involved with noble ladies usually ends with the commoners killed and the noble ladies exiled to a monastery."

However, the nephews, who were originally a bit noisy, kept silent.

He intended to turn back for a check.

A warning honed from his military experience suddenly arose.

He instinctively bent down, and heard a swoosh as a sleeve arrow flew over his head and thudded into the gray wall before him.

Turning around to see.

His eyes widened with horror as he saw his two nephews had their necks pierced by sleeve arrows, collapsing to the ground, one after the other.

His anger subsided the moment he saw the intruders' faces.

In the darkness, a group of men shrouded in gray robes and headscarves advanced silently like phantoms.

There were at least thirty of them, and Fabio immediately pieced together a terrifying term in his mind — Assassins!

Two assassins raised their hand crossbows, aiming at his throat and heart respectively.

Fabio rolled, trying to dodge.

But beyond seven steps, the crossbow was fast, and within seven steps, it was both fast and accurate.

Bam—

Two crossbow arrows suddenly deflected, as if encountering an invisible barrier.

Someone suddenly appeared between Fabio and the assassins.

The newcomer wore only a thin silk shirt, barehanded, watching them with smiling eyes.

The assassins were startled, as they didn't know when he had approached them.

"Who are you?"

The assassins asked in clumsy Frankish.

"If nothing else, I should be your assassination target."

Losa casually took a dried sweet date from the table and chewed it.

He scanned these people up and down: "Indeed, Assassins. Have you monopolized all the assassination business in the Eastern world?"

"Perfect, let me see if you're more formidable than the group I encountered last time."

Before the words fell.

Sleeve arrows and crossbow arrows came raining down on Losa.

But Losa showed no intention of dodging.

Losa took this "performance show" very seriously; without displaying overwhelming power, it would be hard to convince Prajna.

While he didn't mind being managed by Prajna, Losa hoped to secure more freedom for himself—at least not being followed even to the bathroom.

"My Lord!"

Fabio's face showed a trace of panic as he grabbed a plank from the wall and rushed towards Losa.

However, before getting close, he was suddenly tossed aside by a powerful force.

Looking up, he saw it was the Female Knight who stopped him!

Jeanne smiled and nodded at him: "Relax, my Lord can handle these little guys; just watch from the side."

Furinjira snorted coldly: "They want to rely on Demon-Blocking Gold to counter our Blood Royal Court's secret technique, but they won't succeed."

Demon-Blocking Gold affects most extraordinary creatures in this world, but not those who serve from another realm.

Crossbow arrows and sleeve arrows penetrated Losa's figure, causing ripples.

Suddenly, an Assassin clutched his neck as blood gushed from between his fingers.

It turned out that Losa had quietly moved among them without them noticing.

In his hand, a Shining Cross Sword appeared out of thin air, and under the blessing of Bloodfall, he seemed to transform into a blood shadow, weaving through the crowd.

Losa was still using the Blood Magic bestowed upon her by Furinjira to fight, but her combat style clearly leaned more towards a Close Combat Mage.

Each fallen individual quickly gushed out a large pool of blood, like a pump.

"Tsk, you may be numerous, but your skill levels are quite ordinary."

In the blink of an eye.

Over ten of the invading Assassins were dead, and the remaining ones simultaneously reached into their cloaks, clearly intending to ingest something.

Losa had already been anticipating this move.

Even though he was confident he could defeat them even after they took their substances, the effect certainly wouldn't be as overwhelming as it was now.

Thus, he raised his hand and snapped his fingers: "Blood Burst."

Blood Burst is not Bloodfall.

In the next moment.

All the blood flowing on the ground from the dead exploded with a boom, like some kind of powerful explosive, into countless sharp blades of blood, piercing the nearby Assassins like sieves.

Furinjira was somewhat surprised: "My lord has even mastered this move—I can barely use it, how is my lord so at ease?"

Jeanne pondered: "Perhaps it has something to do with the lord's Dragon Bloodline."

She gently nudged Prajna with her elbow: "How is it, isn't the lord impressive?"

"Hmm."

Prajna's expression was also a bit surprised: "I didn't expect the lord's progress to be so fast."

Losa pursued and killed the remaining enemies one by one, and his level directly rose to eleven.

On the battlefield, using lance and sword to kill enemies was really too slow.

In comparison, dealing with these lightly armored or even unarmored Assassins was much easier.

"M...my lord."

Fabio looked nervously at Losa as he slowly walked towards him.

He could hardly believe that these legendary ferocious and ruthless Assassins were dealt with so effortlessly by Losa, using such...magical means.

Losa said appreciatively: "Fabio, I'm very pleased with your performance, even though you didn't manage to help much."

"I am very ashamed, my lord."

Fabio's voice trembled a little.

He was quite skilled in martial arts, but to him, someone like Losa was beyond the realm of dealing with through martial arts, clearly more akin to a Wizard.

Losa said: "I am a Wizard, not a Demon, you can be assured of that, Fabio."

Fabio nodded: "Yes, yes, my lord, it's just that I've never seen a Wizard before."

"Kneel, Fabio."

Losa placed the Cross Sword on the other's shoulder.

"My...my lord, you?"

Fabio was bewildered for a moment, initially puzzled as it wasn't the posture for beheading.

Only later did he realize that this was not a punishment but the beginning of the knighthood ceremony he had longed for.

"You've done your best, and you've managed Flyn Manor quite well; I appreciate your talents."

"Well, Fabio."

Losa's tone became extremely serious: "Do you wish to become my Imperial Knight?"

"My lord, I do!"

A surge of joy rose in Fabio's heart, but seeing the bodies of his two nephews lying on the ground brought a wave of sadness.

"Then make your oath to me,"

Fabio only slightly organized his words before beginning his oath.

In the mouth of the minstrel, the scene of soldiers being knighted for their bravery was quite common; he hadn't seen the real deal, but reciting the minstrel's words wouldn't be a problem.

Losa solemnly said: "I accept your loyalty, Fabio, you should know I'm a generous person; I never begrudge rewards for my people. I will grant you armor and weapons, but not a fief, which you need to earn through merit."

Fabio is talented, and Losa had very few managerial talents at his disposal.

Learning from the Eastern Empire and implementing a bureaucracy was too difficult, as Frankish people are not Greeks, and the literacy rate is too low.

Imperial Knights are actually a salaried standing army.

But Losa instead plans to regress, letting this standing army act as military commanders for each of his territories and estates.

Losa also intends to teach these Imperial Knights the skills of drilling troops in the future, essentially military training.

Infantry doesn't need to be elite or highly capable, just being disciplined makes them top-tier infantry in this world.

Relying solely on the standing army for warfare is really unreliable.

Sooner or later, he would have to recruit the elderly farmers of the land into his army.

All he could do was, after Marles's Blacksmith Workshop increased its output, allocate a set of low-quality chest armor made by joining two steel plates to everyone.

Fabio hurriedly said: "My lord, I am already very satisfied to be knighted by you, I dare not hope for a fief."
